Denon AVR-1804 and Spectro Acoustics 2102 graphic equalizer

Hi guys
I have an old NAD 2340 amp and a spectro acoustics 2102 graphic equalizer in my garage and intend to retire the nad and hopefully connect my Denon AVR-1804 in to the mix (the Denon has been retired from house duties, and my new Denon AVR- 4311 has assumed the lounge room job and boy is it great) The old NAD has pre and main connections on the rear and that’s how the spectro had been connected. As the denon doesn’t have those connections but tape in and out loops should that work? I tried but it wasn’t successful. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, also note the denon will be used in stereo mode only. Thanks guys

You should be able to use either the Tape Out or the Zone 2 Out jacks with the limitation that only 2.0 analog connected sources will pass to either one (unlike main zone pre-outs on an AVR in which any input will pass through to them).

Thanks JD
My 1804 doesn’t have zone 2 connections (maybe the US versions do)? I’ll try the tape in/ out connections again and see what I get. The spectro has connections labeled for either tape or main that can be used. I also should note the NAD is a 3240pe not a 2340 my bad. I have found that if I run some rca leads from the tape out on the denon 1804 to a spare input into the nad and configure as before with the spectro that all works ( denon just acts as a switching device) but then I still have the nad in the makeup and I was trying to eliminate it from the system so I could use the denons own power and remote control for volume. It seems like more tinkering is still required.biggrin.gif

Using the tape out jacks, you're still going to need an amp to power your speakers unless you're using powered speakers.

JD what I thought would work but it now appears it wont work correctly is to run rca leads from the tape out on the denon through the spectro tape in, then back out the spectro using the tape out connections and back in to the denon’s tape in connection. Turn the recout selector to say tuner for example and set the input selector to tape/cdr and I thought the signal would leave the denon be equalized by the spectro and returned to the tape/cdr in and be amplified by the denon. It sort of works (as I get sound from the speakers) but the signal does not appear to be affected in any way by the spectro, if any thing the the signal is reduced and also if I move any the sliders on the spectro there is no apparent change to the sound being reproduced. As stated connected to the nad the signal will be boosted or reduced depending on slider + or – positions. Thanks again JD

Try using the DIRECT surround mode on the 1804.

Thanks again JD for your help. I was able to find the problem and it was simple. All I needed to do was route the rca leads from the denon through the main in and out connections on the spectro (not the tape loop connections) and it works a treat. I also found that the sound works best using stereo then direct. I’ve got a spare 8 inch powered sub sitting around and I’ll try that when I get home from work too. Regards wassa biggrin.gif
