Whole-home Intercom/Radio cuts out – troubleshooting?

I just bought a home that is around 30 years old, that has a home intercom/radio/speaker system (also around that old from the looks of it). We been in the home for about 3 weeks and just the last few days the radio has been cutting out intermittently for 5-10 seconds at a time.

There are a couple of symptoms:
  1. Sounds as if the antenna (not sure where located) is being interfered with (maybe a bat in the attic?).
  2. Sounds like someone is clicking the "intercom" button at one of the stations. (Yes, all children have been accounted for when this happens. :P)

I'm new to these systems and do not have a schematic of how things are wired – unless this will be in our home abstract. We also have a few speakers throughout the home that don't seem to be working.

What is the best way to go about troubleshooting one of these systems?

Eventually, I will probably upgrade to something that can connect to an iPad/iPhone/Mac–what will be required to do this, if the system is on the way out?

Thanks.

My 20 year old intercom system is inoperable. Its disconnected, and it's being removed piecemeal. The radio would turn on randomly, and the intercom quality was atrocious.

The replacement parts you will need to buy will be used, and possibly equally problematic.

I would suggest replacing yours.

The local dealer for your equipment will try to sell you a new one, if you call him for service.

If you really want an intercom system, you have a few choices. Buy a new one that uses the same cables (limited choices, old tech), fish new category cables for a better system, or use a phone system with paging capabilities.

Bottom line, find a good installer who will help you choose wisely. Check references.

Very good advice. If the radio is going out, is there a way to just replace that and keep the current wiring? I may contact a local dealer and see what my options are. Is there any way a guy could do this himself, or is that quite a project?
