Assistance with screen size

Hi all,

I'm in the process of setting up a small home theater in the basement of my new home. I have a projector mounted (Epson 8350) which I'm currently displaying on a painted wall. My wife loves the current size (120 diagonal) and does not want it any smaller. However, the projection wall is only 11'5" or 137 inches wide. Given some of the measurments of total screen size that I've been seeing (ex., Jamestown 120 is 111 wide including frame), I'm thinking that 120 might be too big for the wall. My speakers (BIC Acoustech PL-76 fronts with PL-26 center) would probably block part of the screen if someone was sitting at an angle to the screen.

Is there a calculator that helps one determine the max screen size for a given wall?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Let me know if more information about the set up is needed.

While is does not provide the total dimensions you need is does provide viewing area http://www.displaywars.com/. You need to consider that anywhere from few inches to nearly a foot can be added to the width depending if it is a fixed frame, , Tab tensioned etc.

My Stewart electric tab tensioned screens adds additional 10" (5" on each side) at the widest point (the bottom) to the viewing area width and 4" (2" on each side) at Mid screen.

Thanks batmanbeyond. Based on the site you linked it looks like I'm pushing my limits with 120. Perhaps I might think about putting up a AT screen with in walls behind it.

Oh, c'mon. You can go bigger. Get the AT screen.

My screen wall is 131" wide. My AT screen is 138" diagonal. That's 120" wide plus 6"+ for the frame.

You can do it!

Unfortunately I agree, but I like a large image. I have a stewart 100" 16x9 AT screen, was largest I could go in my previous theater. This month I am ordering a 160" AT 2:35.1 for my current theater. I look at the screen as a long term investment, mainly be cause of cost, so I choose base on theater, then adjust other things like this size will push my JVC, which I will deal with until I upgrade it.

What screen are you going to be going with? I am looking to change from a 110" diagonal 2.35 to a 130" diagonal 2.35 and can't decide if I should go with a 2.4 high power to maximize nrightness.

As of now I plan on a Stewart ultra matte 150 Microperf, 2:35.1 155" diag. I have total light control and dark grey walls, flat black ceiling.

Eric,

Most say 80-90% of the wall can be the screen size but be careful and allow 8" forvthe frame.

Next you gotta pick format, 16:9 / 1.78 or 2.4. If you are a big TV and sports guy then 1.78 is best if your a movie person then go 2.4

Then height is an issue. Many say your eyes should be at 25-33% of screen height.

At any rate it looks like AT is the only option to get a large screen.

My wall is 174 Inches wide but I do not plan on having a AT screen.. so I have to minus some of the speakers on the left and right... so lets say 1 and a half feet on each side so that would leave me with around 162 inches max to play with in width.. Now here is the catch.. I have a sofit on the top left of the room... And a Stage built that my speakers are going to sit on... So therefore I only have abournd 55 to 56 inches max to play with in Height.. What do you think I can go with

Holiiday,

What is the ceiling height?

I have 9' ceiling. My screen height is 56" so the screen is 132.7 (11' and a smidge). The room is 13'9" wide that means I have about a foot on each side of the screen frame to the corner. Speakers had to under the screen so the speakers could not have been large at all. YOu would be surprised at how many good speakers are out there under 3' tall...

Almost forgot the screen is a fixed 2.37 but you could have figure that out with simple division.

And on the other hand I dont want a 2:37 screen because I am not going to have a A lens.. Even though I can do without it.

I already have all my speakers..

For a dedicated light controlled room with dark walls and ceiling, I like a lower gain screen. While I like my HP screen in my family room setup, I watch all of my movies in the dedicated room with a .85 gain screen. Screen is 9' wide and I use an A-lens. Brightness is not a problem.

What kind of screen you suggest. I have black ceiling and black front projector wall as well as dark colors all the way around.. No light in the room at all... What brand and gain you recommend to go with one of the new jvc models

My HTI has a width of 138" and I plan on getting the criterion Carada 110" 16/9 screen (width with frame is about 100").

That will leave me at the most 38" on both side or about a foot and a half on each side.

My speakers are 12" width each.

I'll toe in the speakers a bit which makes the speakers even wider than 12".

In worse case, the sides of the speakers will probably aligne with part of the outside frame but hopefully not the screen.

Do you think it'll be too tight for my screen size (110")?

Hi guys, similar question, regarding HT room set up.
Here are dimensions: room size: 250”x174” , wall on which I'd like to position a screen is 144”x90” my head is with (16:9).
Ceiling is white and the current walls are mocha but hopefully not for long, would like to paint it burgundy color.
I’m debating either epson 5020 or panny AE8000u & would like to position the projector on the rear wall. What screen size do you suggest? Any particular screens you would recommend? What’s your take on SI screens? Your input is greatly appreciated.
