NFL Kickoff Special 2012 on NBC

WNBC-DT NYC FiOS

Surprised the audio is not DD 5.1. Even the segments from the stadium are not DD 5.1.
I'm guessing once the game coverage starts at 8:30pm the audio is going to switch to DD 5.1.
Some of the vocals were very low on the musical performances.
Michelle Beadle's segments from Rockefeller Plaza do not sound good.

At least you're not hearing the static that I'm hearing. It's not me either.

I see the idiots in the graphics department have the useless tint below the scorebar for yet another season. Sigh...

Audio is DD 5.1 for the game. smile.gif

Was the anthem live? It sounded like a recording.

My only complaint is the un needed black tint below the score bar.
On WNBC-DT that black area has motion artifacts and video smear.

Is there any reason why NBC does not remove the black tinted area and only uses it for NFL broadcasts?

I’m kinda disappointed there was no Faith Hill intro.

I have wondered why NBC keeps that tint down there for football. If I remember right, once versus became the NBC Sports Network earlier this year, when there was that same scorebar at the bottom for basketball games there was no tint and it looked great. Not sure of the purpose of that tint, other than the fact that the old NBC graphics package had that chain linked tint.

Anthem was live vocals and taped track.

I'm not very impressed with the PQ tonight. SNF has looked better. I'm seeing much more macroblocking on motion than I remember SNF having last year. Watching WKYC Cleveland OTA on a 50" 1080p plasma. One weather subchannel.

I'm watching on WEYI out of Flint Michigan on Dish. They game looks great to me but NBC in our area only broadcasts in DD 2.0. It has been that way since sometime before the Super Bowl last year. I emailed the station and an engineer answered with this reply.

"WEYI lost it's Dolby encoder which produces 5.1 during a power outage. It
has had to go back in for repairs twice and instead of putting an inferior
5.1 signal on to please a few we chose to get it repaired properly. It had
to be sent to Canada for repairs and unfortunately these encoders are not
readily available so the delay is in the repair process. We do have the
unit back now and plan to get it on the air this week. As a surround sound
viewer, I share your frustration."

The problem is that he sent me this email on June 4th but It still hasn't been turned on. We had the Super Bowl, Olympics, and now this season's opener in 2.0 and I am sick of it. I sent him another email tonight asking what is going on. Hopefully he responds with a reasonable time frame.

OTA Free HD looking good here. No surround hooked in tonight, so no comment on audio.

10 pts at the half looks like a pre season game wink.gif

I agree with you, the PQ looks sub par for SNF normal from last season, I'm watching on DirecTV on 48" Samsung 1080p LCD.

Michelle's mic at the end is ridiculously loud! Turn it down Wendel!

NBC switched to the tint before the Comcast purchase, and I really don't understand why they've kept it. None of the other sports have it, so it's completely ridiculous that they've kept it for their premiere live game package.

I don't mix the studio segments.

What, are you psychic? (assuming that NY won't score for the remaining 1 minute).

Oh, and on subject, I wanted just info in the pregame show, not the crummy music they were providing. Why do people like Mariah Carey? Is it the t*ts? I'm on Directv and didn't check the input and was running in PLIIx mode anyways...

PS big d'oh moment...was watching on the avr and forgot! Hey, here on the west coast it wasn't even dark yet....

Well, my faith in you has thankfully been restored. But your counterpart did a horrendous job. Michelle's interview sounded absolutely awful.

Idiots? Really?

Nice.

Thanks WSFA Montgomery for another season of watching players smear across the screen and static shots construct themselves a pixel at a time.

I heard back from him today and I think he is feeding me a load of crap. Here is the email response I got from him today.

"Yes we did in fact put in the Dolby 5.1 and it sounded like crap. Channel information was missing and not consistent and certainly not airable. We used Enhanced 2.0 for the Olympics and are on that now. While it may show only 2 channels on your receiver it is in fact passing all 6 channels of audio and any good home theater system will put it out in surround sound. We tested this on several home theater systems and it sounded as good if not better than 5.1 from other stations. Try to give it a good listen. The game last night had all 6 channels going and sounded great. We will be staying on the 2.0 Enhanced mode as that passes all 6 channels."

I have some understanding of how Pro Logic works and I think this might be what he is talking about. I do have that turned on and get some sound from my rears but I was always under the impression that isn't as good as true 5.1 sound. Is there really such a thing as Enhanced 2.0? I feel like I'm missing part of the experience of SNF. Is there another area I should be posting this in to get more feedback? Either way it doesn't sound like my local NBC is planning on ever fixing this problem so there might be nothing I can do.

Concerning the black tint below the score bug, PLEASE turn it off.. Better yet raise the score bar to the top of the screen, like the Hockey telecasts, and get it off the field... Think about it NBC, every highlight shown anywhere would show the NBC Bug at the top of the screen... No-brainer up-grade, how about starting it Sunday night???...

That black tint, sure remove it. Top of the screen? No way! I find the score bar at the bottom much more natural and less distracting than at the top.

I would have guessed that the NFL Kickoff would beat Clinton's speech, but apparently he beat the NFL.

4 years ago the convention had 26 million that nite while the kickoff game had 14 milllion....that game was 1.5 hrs earlier than last nite but still lost by over double.

Its amazing that the game almost beat it last nite.

+ thats the total audience with all the old people factored in -- who won the 18-49 # ?....i think we know who.

In the overall numbers, yes. But in 18-49, it wasn't even close.

This game wasn't up against the lead speaker. It got beaten by a night 2 speaker.

It got beaten in an irrelevant category.
