Ascend Acoustics is a great ID brand. I own a pair of the CBM-170SEs as well as the Sierra-1s (non-NrT). I highly recommend them but there are many other brands out there worth auditioning when you're ready,
FWIW I just did the nrt upgrade myself on the L/R, the center I bought already upgraded (bought used). Not a huge difference, but I couldn't exactly a/b them either. I did a/b the pre-nrt Sierra-1s and the 170SEs, though. Sierras are worth the money although the 170SEs I think are very good value and sound great.
Oh, and totally agree there's lots of good stuff out there. If you don't mind the efficiency, the SVSound MBS02s at 400 the pair aren't too bad (I couldn't resist) but I like the Ascends better. They were actually in my comparison (I have an a/b/c 2 channel switch).
