Thanks for the welcome, crn, but after more study of the devices, there are just major differences between the 720 and the 820. Aside from lots of I/O differences (none of which truly matter to me):
- The YPAO apparently functions differently
- There are no pre-outs for the 7 channels (this may be a critical function for me)
- The zone support appears to be totally different (again a function I'll use)
The differences between the 720, the 820 and the others in the Aventage line, seem to be primarily in build: Symmetrical Amp Layout, Dual Heat Sinks, and Center Mount transformer. I can't personally attest to what these mean in terms of performance, but at least one expert comment on the 1020 said that these are essentially irrelevant from 820 to 1020. As a communications engineer, I can't say that I could completely agree -- but again I have no "ears on" experience or test results that would support that statement. As you go higher in the line, naturally you get more internal feature improvements.
In any case, you'll find any discussion about my A820 over at the "Official RX-773" thread -- it appears to be most similar to the 820 in terms of functionality. Again, any differences may be in build where the Aventage line at least from a marketing view is supposed to have an edge.
