Should I see the classics on BD?

Not all the old classics were very long. Casablanca only clocks in at 102 minutes, comparable to anything today.

What are you defining as "nothing much happens"? Are you into special effects, car chases, explosions, or gunfights?

Because otherwise the classics have something going on all the time if you're willing to find it.

Most of what happens in those classics can be found in serious dramas and independent films today. Emphasis on character, conflict between ideologies and personalities, and such.

But some older films also have some pretty stunning scenes that still hold up. Spartacus has some great battle scenes, Ben Hur has the chariot chase, and Lawrence of Arabia has some stunning cinematography and a pretty tense desert crossing, and those are the things just off the top of my head.

You are missing out if you dont watch the classics.
I've just watched the Sting and Maltese Falcon. Both were incredible.
I've also watched Citizen Kane and thought it was lame.

Many times I find the special effects/stunts in the classics more amazing since I know they are real and not computer graphics.

Do yourself a favor. MAKE SURE that you see Lawrence Of Arabia . . . in a theater. It will be playing for one night only - October 4th. Here is a list of all the theaters that will be showing it:

Yea, I would say don't bother with Lawrence of Arabia on the small screen. It's a bit of a chore. Saw it for the first time a few years ago and I don't remember a whole lot about it. I purchased a copy of it on Superbit dvd back then because it was a "classic" and sold it after viewing because I doubted I would watch it again. On a huge screen, in a theater, maybe it would have been another matter entirely. I always read raves about seeing it on the "big screen", since restoration.

PS: I've never seen a Saw movie and I wouldn't be caught dead watching a Transformers movie, so don't judge me too harshly.

The OP's in Denmark. I'm not sure he can catch the October 4th showing of Lawrence Of Arabia. Maybe they'll do Europe sometime later.

All the films are from 1979 or before and there are thumbnails to give you an idea of what they look like. The reviews indicate if they are available in Blu-ray.

If you don't see anything that looks good: give up.
