UT50 Vs E550?

Thread Starter
Soooo, It's been confirmed already that the UT50 has superior black levels(no suprise there) and slightly less crosstalk for 3D material, but what about motion performance, color, brightness
and input lag? Forget about that HDMI 'PC' labeling trick on the E550 which knocks it down to an impressive 1 frame of lag. I couldn't care less about that since
some of the basic picture controls such as color, color temp and sharpness have been locked out in the process. XP

People also seem to be saying that the UT50 doesn't shine so well with anything other than 1080p content. 480p and 720p material apperantly look 'soft' or there's this
wierd funky oil painting effect going on...And this entire input lag ordeal has been a complete confusing mess. rolleyes.gif Somebody even mentioned that by using 'component' instead of HDMI yields a signifant drop in lag.
So all in all. The UT50 wins in black level performance and slightly regarding 3D,but dissapoints in terms of quality with anything other than 1080p content. but what about these other factors?

Color
Brightness
Motion handeling
ect

I'm Wondering how the E550 in game mode, with the Cell Light on MAX, CATS set to OFF and contrast to 100 would compare to the UT50 in Game mode with the same contrast setting.Yet why do i get the feeling the panasonics easily have the samsungs beat this year in brightness? Whenever i think 'samsung plasma' i think dim picture. tongue.gif

I watched a few times the e550 in the shops and it appears nowhere dim to me. It's fairly bright in my opinion. I also observed the ut50 and seemed more or less the same and anyway enough for me, but didn't have the opportunity to make a comparison side by side, and I only watched them in separate occasions so maybe my memory fails me.
E550 was my main option until a week ago (i like superior Samsung processing on 480p and 720p, which appear incredibly crisp and detailed an this year's E series 1080p lcds which mount the same Mstar processor, plus its resiliance to IR), then I discovered its panel supposedly relies on a pentile matrix so i definitely discarded it (but even on this matter sources are few, some says that only the 60" has pentile panel and the 50" has a real full 1080p).

So the only contender remained the UT50 which I'll definitely get tomorrow. On paper, it should be superior in any way, but when I tried PZ80 (only Panasonic I could get my hands on) a few years ago it really let me down with its sub-par processing. My main concerns about UT50 would be those of scaling and IR. Input lag, whatever it will be, I think I'll have to deal with it, within reasonable limits; i'm alredy going mad only to get a decent panel cool.gif

The 60" pentile panel is only used on the E530 and E550.

Can you please elaborate as to why you think the pentile matrix is a negative and a reason to no longer consider the E550?

I was in the market for an Samsung E550 as well as a Panasonic UT50 but when I brought the wife and daughter to see them, they both liked the UT50 better. I'm sure I would have been happy with either, but ended up with the UT50. Personally I liked the E550 better in person.

I have been in this same boat for over 2 weeks now. Cant make up my god damn mind as to which I like. I have looked at both these sets at BB, but really doesn't make sense because of the settings in store, lighting etc..

OP - what did you end up getting?

The UT50 has stronger, sharper images. Better video processing and better blacks. Images on the E550 are soft, and have a hazy, glazy look. I would get the UT50, or if you like Samsung, step up to the E6500 if you can.

How much of a big difference is the PQ between the two? Can a casual viewer tell the difference ? I am no videophile. Had last years Samsung D490 (720p), so the E550 / UT50 is quite an upgrade.

I really am leaning towards the Samsung, because of a better feature set (wireless, Samsung SMART TV, browser), and the swivel stand (imp for me since I have multiple viewing positions), and the two 3D glasses; but I am quite vary of buzzing (though my last years model did not have any). Meanwhile everyone is raving about the blacks on Panny and its extraordinary PQ in an entry level model. Worried about the IR on panny though. My last years Samsung did not have one single instance of IR even after watching hours and hours of same channel / gaming. Looks like Sammy performs better in that aspect.

So the only reason, I would really get a Panny is if the difference in PQ is huge, after all PQ is the most important 'feature' of a TV.

Would you say the same for non-1080 p content?

Anyone ?

Appreciate input from someone who has examined the TV's up close. (not in stores i.e. )

They are both nice TVs, and the E550 has a nicer set of features and menu interface. Sleek design. But bottom line pic quality is better on the UT50, with better blacks and video processing. Although SD does look good on the E550. but perhaps it is due to the softer image. They both have a bit of glare, but it is worse on the E550. You need to go in the store and try to tweak the pic adjustments on both TVs to see which one can best satisfy your preferences.
