and that is exactly the way it's supposed to work.
Blu-ray, DVD, any 5.1 source has a dedicated .1 LFE (bass) track. so with fronts set to Large, the .1 track PLUS all redirected bass < Xover from your center & surrounds gets sent to both the fronts & the sub.
on 2 channel music or TV, if you have the fronts set to Large, unless you use ProLogic IIx or similar to create a surround field, then the 2 ch music, including all the bass, goes to the fronts & none to the sub.
set your speakers to Small & if you have typical surrounds & center, your Xover to 80Hz, and your sub will be used for all bass < 80 Hz all the time.
room correction systems look at whether the speaker can reproduce 40-50 Hz tone and set it to Large if they can. that doesn't mean that is the optimal setup for every specific speaker & home theater use. Most will advise you to set them to Small even if the room correction system sets to Large. You can do it either way, but if you want your sub to work on 2 ch music & don't want to use change 2 ch to surround, then you'll need to set them to Small. and the Xover is not a hard brick wall filter, it has a slope, so your fronts will still be reproducing some of the bass; it'll just be gradually sloped off.
