Spoiled by DLP, on the way out, what new TV to look for?

Have a Samsung LED DLP HLT5687 for the past 4 years and a few months and after 11,000 hours of use, the red LED has went, at least that's what I think it is. Blue-Green hue, then the screen starts flickering every second in blue after the tv has been on for a few minutes. I was debating on replacing the LED but reading all the other things that can go wrong with these aging units, I think I'll just spring for a new tv altogether.

My question is, what's a closer match to the quality of DLP after all these years? Plasma or LED LCD HDTV? Want the same size point of 55-60 inches, I'm kind of interested in 3D but it's not a necessity.

Except for the size (new Mitsubishis are 73 inches+), what's wrong with the Mitsubishi bulb or laser driven DLPs?

You might be able to find an older 65 inch somewhere.

What price range are you shooting for?

...But first... I think that you should reconsider before trashing your HLT5687. Despite the rarity of that model, parts are readily available and inexpensive (including

the DLP DMD, system board, power supply boards, replacement Phlatlight LEDs).

You may not be aware, but this TV can already do checkerboard 3D. It can be "upgraded" to handle the latest side by side and top/bottom 3D formats by grabbing

a 3DC-1000 adapter (found mine cheap on eBay).

Still, if your dead set on a new TV..and for whatever reasons aren't interested in a new Mitsu DLP; I will then recommend a few LED LCDs. I personally do not like

plasmas.

Hmm, I'm almost set on moving away from DLP in general due to the scarcity and the 73 is definitely too big for my space

Yeah, I originally spent $1400 on it, stand included so it was a great deal. I'm just paranoid about anything else failing shortly after if I do try the LED replacement. Otherwise I'm comfortable with repairing computers so the overall procedure doesn't seem too tough. We loved this tv so much and my research on any new Plasma/LED LCD has been driving me a little nuts with pros and cons. For the $100 the part costs, I might just breakdown and give the repair a try. Budget is anything $2,000 and under

Our 61" Samsung had a beautifull picture & we also had it for a little over 4 yrs. [ext warranty expired]

Never did have to change the LED bulb, but after reading, [from threads on AVS forum] it seems a simple procedure..

Only reason we replaced it was the dreaded Whiote dots [16-18] on screen.

We went fro the 65" Samsung LCD/LED lite.

I miss the better picture of the DLP; so now we're on the hunt for a 82" or 92" Mits for our family room..

But as you can see from my earlier post, having problems with getting proper delivery & service & availability...

Good Luck on your decision..

I did notice BB has some left over 60" & 65" models @ like $599 & $799 that might fit your confined area..

Beware = your set & all DLP's need good cooling off area behind them...

I am going to go against my own tendency, and have decided to recommend a very nice plasma.

Check out Panasonic's Viera TC-P55VT50. Slightly more than 2K but well worth it.

It outclasses even the Sharp Elites.
Yeah, I was looking into the Plasma route and Panadonic is definitely at the top of my list, thanks

I'm going to try to fix the DLP, the part is on the way but just in case...What's the model number of the LCD LED you purchased?. Is it really that huge of a difference in quality? I've been away from tv tech for so long

#8 ·
Sorry Rosscan, i've already sold it.. about 1 month ago.

It was 61" Samsung DLP with LED Bulb, & Yes i do miss the picture..

Am going to try & order the Mits 82" or 92" again tommorow.

By the way i noticed that BB has 60" Mits for $499 [that's sick]

On the Plasma, study long & hard before tying a bunch of money into a Plasma. Research !!

By the way we have a Calibration being done Oct. so that might improve the LCD/LED 65" Samsung that we got for the living room...

Sure, and "Old Ram Fan" is correct in stating that you should thoroughly research plasma tech.

If you or any family members are heavy gamers (or have plans of ever using it as a secondary PC monitor) then I completely retract that Panny endorsement.

However, if Blu-ray/HD movie watching would be the primary use _and you're not concerned about a slightly hiked elec bill_; then go for it.

Reasons for my personal preference to avoid plasma: glossy screen, heat emission, power hogging, static image burn-in is still a possibility, and picture dimming as it ages.

There are plenty of decent looking LED LCDs on the market primarily from SHARP, LG, and Vizio....but that particular Panny Viera plasma bests them all.

In the end···glad that you have decided to attempt repair of your Sammy. Easy fix, you'll have it looking great again soon.

#10 ·
I agree with Kewl, j ust wanted to add life span on the Plasma as a concern...

Which part are you getting for your Sammie, the Ti chip ???

Let us know how you do ! & Good Luck !

By the way we plucked down our Credit Card for a new 92" Mits tonight & are now anxious for info on this beauty..

Our Mits WS-65809 was probably the finest TV we've ever owned.. & we've had Sony 32" CRT to Kloss 6 1/2 ' front projection set to Samsung 61" & 65" er's

#12 ·
Thanks everyone for your input so far, I am a bit of a gamer so Plasma may be an issue? I'm also noticing the Panasonic is hard to find in stock at local B&M stores that I'd like to purchase from.

I'm replacing the Red LED, the part should be here tomorrow, hopefully it fixes the blue flickering as well and and lasts me a few more months, or wishful thinking, years.

I'm with Augerhandle on this. For the money being asked it is a great deal. The 73 inch Mits DLP always has seemed the sweet spot in these DLPs. Bright, sharp, with good viewing angles and uniformity of light across the screen.

As most who have owned large screens, you will not likely find it too big at all, and you will appreciate the immersion.

Replaced the RED LED just now....the GLORIOUS picture is back! Still holding my breath though but so far it's an astounding success!

Congrats. You applied a dab of new thermal compound, right?

...Just being cautious.

I currently have a Samsung 55" DLP that I have enjoyed for about four years. It has had the usual problems of White Dot Syndrome and the Color Wheel. I recently replaced the lamp (very easy to do) and have considered giving the set to my mother and buying one of the 60' or 65" Mitsubishi sets at Best Buy. I am a big fan of DLP, while my wife likes her Panasonic Plasma. I watch a lot of movies and she sticks to "reality" TV).

Would you say the above mentioned DLPs are a good value and more than worth the money if I can still get one (I would buy the extended warranty as I have done in the past). I watch from a distance of about 6 to 7 feet and just do not want to got to plasma if I can avoid it. Additionally I fear a 73" DLP would be just too big for my room (10' X 10').

Thanks in advance to any that may care to answer.

The Mitsu WD-60638 and WD-65638 are great deals, but there are some things you should be aware of before diving in.

-They are leftover stock from 2010.

-You would have to buy a 3DC-1000 or 3DA-1 adapter for full 3D support (adapter converts the modern top/bottom and side by side 3D standards to the compatible checkerboard format).

-Both models still use the good old lamp + colorwheel light engine.

+They offer exceptional picture quality with large screen sizes at a great deal.

+Black level, contrast and color accuracy are very good.

+These models are still advertised & fully supported by Mitsubishi.

+Easy to repair, but yes, def get that extended warranty.

I personally would not hesitate to buy one if my HL-61A750 spontaneously combusted.

-These models were notorious for DMD failures (the Ti imaging chip). There was a class action lawsuit, supposedly Mitsu "made right" concerning the situation.

Glad I stumbled on to this thread, I joined here to see if the 60" and 65" 638 series TV's are good buys for the money. Basically it seems a buyer should figure on adding the service plan to CYA.

I would like to correct a few errors in the previous post.

1. The models sited in that post ARE NOT KNOWN to have any large amount of DMD failures. The majority of DMD failures seem to have occurred on 2007 - 2008 TVs and affected all DLP TVs regardless of manufacturer. It seems to have been solved or considerably reduced before the 2010 models.

2. If you check the Mitsubishi web site, you will find that the class action law suits and the settlements listed there have NOTHING do will the DMD failures. Mitsubishi seems to have put in place an accommodation for consumers without any class action law suit.

You are correct sir, thank you.

I will edit out the lawsuit statement from that post.

One of my information sources was misinformed. Apologies.....

Now to see if I can actually get either one from Best Buy!

I have a Samsung 56 inch DLP model HL-56A650 which is dying. I have had 4 bulbs, some ballasts and now the DLP chip is going out, at least that is what Best Buy says. Fortunately all repairs have been covered by the extended warranty. I will qualify for a replacement with this most recent repair. I came here to see what LCD TV to replace it with and this thread has me nervous. A friend of mine also who owns a DLP is suggesting I go the LCD route. TV is used mainly for watching TV and Movies and I play games on a 360 and PS3. Any suggestions of what to get from Best Buy as I will have to do the replacement through them. Thanks.
