People are saying that Best Buy is telling them this receiver is being discontinued. Can anyone confirm this?

Also - how do you avoid the BSO UPDATING PLEASE WAIT error that some people are getting?

I had a 1700 that was acting up and I wanted to do an exchange versus a return. According to Best Buy's website, no store in the Atlanta metro area had new in a box stock. So I called and asked if they would be getting any more in for exchange purposes. They said no as it was being discontinued. Luckily, they had an open box item so I shaved about $50 off my bill and eventually resolved my issue.

Long story short -- according to what I've heard, yes, it is being discontinued.

Hi - I'm having a problem with my AVR-1700 and was curious if I'm alone. When listening to a music CD with my projector off, the sound drops out periodically. If I turn my display on, the problem disappears. These dropouts occur anywhere from every 10 seconds to every few minutes, and last a few seconds each. Is it an HDMI "handshake" issue, perhaps? It is like the receiver want to communicate with the video output display, but cannot. I'd like to listen to music without firing up my projector.

If anyone has any insight on these sound dropouts, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Yes, it is a hdmi handshake issue, i had a similar issue, i just keep my screen on. Its the tv/projector sending out a signal indicating that is not available

Good question ... and yes.

I've heard other people say that HK showed off their 2700 and 3700 recently...perhaps they are focusing on those higher-end models?

For giggles, if it isn't turned off already in the OSD, turn off HDMI control and see if that resolves it.

HDMI Control did not fix the issue. Maybe HK will roll out a system update at some point to correct it. Thanks.

If you're using a DVD or blu ray player how bout connecting an optical or digital coax cable and assign it to a different input.

Then you can use Disc input for movies and a different source input for music. And you wont have to worry about the TV being on.

I have a Sony blu-ray player, which can play SACD, pandora, crackle radio etc. I also own a wdtv, which can also play spotify. Both of these are connected to 1700 via hdmi. If I switch off my led tv, the audio cuts out momentarily, but it comes back. I have hdmi control set to off have used hdmi 1-3 inputs.

As long as it's on HK's site it is not discontinued. I think BB is telling you because HK's promo has ended and they don't want to deal with it anymore if it does not sell in volumes like it did during this $199 sale - BB is more interested selling you something else, making more profit, I guess.

I have seen it happening with the AVR 1700 whenI set it to two channel mode (I was testing its power delivery capacity with my towers - because with two channels it's supposed to deliver more). When I set it to 5.1 (Logic 7), it worked fine and no issues with dropout with audio switching between stereo and multi-channel.

I just emailed HK to see if this was really being discontinued. It is not. Here is their reply:

"Thank you for your inquiry. The unit is not being discontinued. It is still in production and we also have plenty of stock.

BB probably doesn't want to sell it because they based their entire selling strategy for receivers on how much they weigh. Apparently, weight = quality and power. They probably can't overcome the mindset themselves or of the customers, that a lighter receiver with a different power supply tech is just as good as a 50 lb monster receiver. Easier to give up than to educate people.

I've just started to notice it ever since you guys mentioned it lol. I only notice it when the signal is Dolby digital and when a commercial is in pro logic 2. There's a slight lag in audio when it switches formats. This doesn't bother me. I was testing out my new set up with Far Cry 3 last night and am very satisfied with this AVR.

FWIW

I decided to play with the EZSetEQ a little bit and try some different spots with the mic, as well as making sure there was not a single noise in my house. Seems that placing the microphone at an angle (30-40*) makes the world of difference in making sure that the speaker distances and sound levels are acurate.

I tried this a few times and setting the mic pointing towards the center speaker at that angle appears to be the ticket. All my speaker distances were spot on and pulling out my SPL meter all speakers were reading 84-86DB with the sub hitting 95. I tried difference configuration and went back to the angles mic and everytime it set the speakers just as it should have all hitting the correct DB level and distances.

Is there a way to leave the surround option in auto select and then when it's not a digital signal change it to my preference? For example, it's on auto select Dolby digital during a show. Then it goes to commercial and it auto selects pro logic 2. Can I have it so when it changes to pl2 instead it selects logic 7? Or does this need to be done manually each time I want to change it off auto select?

Thanks for the tip Shady, I'm anxious to re-run EZSetEQ with this approach, it wasn't terribly accurate my first pass at it with the miv pointing straight up.

Hi- What kind of subwoofer is recommended for this unit ? Can I buy a powered sub? I cannot use a passive sub for this unit right? Does anyone here have any recommendations on what sub to use with this AVR? thank you, JEN

A lot of guys on the Slickdeals forum recommended the BIC F12. Highly reviewed for sub-$200. I took a swing with it and am really pleased. When set up correctly, it outputs some REALLY clean bass. It can move the walls if needed, but I have mine set up so it just "boldens" movies and music.

Here's a review over on that site. Amazon has four left for $188 and the reviews there are great as well.

I second this. I have the BIC H100 which is a step up and an unbelievable sub for the money. Best value in home theater!

Does anybody with the HK 1700 also have experience with a Pioneer Elite VSX-50? I've got a pair of each and trying to figure out which one I keep and which one I sell.

I currently have the HK and it sounds really good...but I've heard people say the Elite is "three times the receiver" that the 1700 is.

Now in terms of all of the additional inputs -- I won't really need them. I know they help with resale down the road, but anything beyond three HDMI inputs for my is excess at the moment. I don't have a need for 7.1 ATM either. In terms of features, at quick glance, I'd call it a wash for my wants/needs (Airplay is what I'm after). So it boils down to sound and video.

Since the Elite can clean up video if needed whereas the HK just passes it along, I assume that round goes to the VSX-50. A lot of people rave about HK's sound -- while others say that the 1700 isn't your daddy's HK.

What would you go with? I have approximately the same amount of money wrapped up in them, so money isn't an object...sound quality first and foremost, video quality second.

Trying to pull the trigger on one or the other ASAP so I can wire them in as needed and be done with it.

If it matters, they would power a Jamo 426 HCS 3 set (yeah, I know, not high dollar, but the bang-for-the-buck seems good) and a BIC F12 sub.

My sub was ruined in a flood, would this polk audio work in a pinch? I am on a serious budget.. this price is unbelievable and I love my polk audio center channel.

I have this sub and I love it. My room is about 12 x 17 opening up into a kitchen and it has great bass if you take the time to tweak it. I know others may say to spend a little more but if you're on a tight budget I don't think you'll be disappointed.
