i1Display Pro vs Sypder 4 Elite

I have never been able to understand the process in calibrating my JVC RS1 projector but since the Lawrence of Arabia BluRay is coming out in November I thought that I better get started. Living in a small town, there is no one to call to come so I am game to try with the help of my more technically savvy son.
Which one of these instruments is the best for this application and what else do I need? Calibration disc for BluRay and which one?
Any help with users familiar with these would be deeply appreciated. I understand that the i1Display Pro software has been a problem and the accuracy of the Spyder products in the past have been an issue. Any thoughts of whether this is getting resolved?

The i1 Display Pro is still a much better meter than a spyder 4.

It tracks much closer to our reference meter as the measurements get closer to black.

Has the software for the i1Display Pro been improved? Will I need a Video Essentials BluRay disc or AVE disc to provide a source from my BluRay player or is that included with the i1Display Pro?
Thanks for your help.

X-Rite doesn't really have software that is designed for video display calibration.

Typically for Home Theater people will either use CalMAN (Which is done by the company I work for) or Chromapure. CalMAN will work with either the retail i1 Display Pro, that comes with PC calibration software, or the OEM version. Chromapure only works with the OEM version, so you can't use the X-Rite software with that probe.

Yes you will need a disc for patterns like the Video Essentials, or the free AVS 709 disc.
