Budget home theater system--Energy Take 5 or Bic Speakers?

So I moved into a new house, and will be using my Yamaha RX-V765 receiver to power my new home theater in the den/family room, and will be using my BIC F12 sub. It is 15x15 room with the back being partially opened to the kitchen. I need a new speaker system for this house (the monoprice in wall and in ceilings worked great at the old house but wont work in the arrangement I want to do in this one). I wont listen to music that often on them, as they would be primarily used for movies and watching TV. So I think I have narrowed it down to the following:

Either:
Energy Take 5 speaker system (seems to be different models? depending on year made, at least they look different without the grills on)
OR
BIC DV-62CLRS Center, BIC DV62si for fronts (will be sitting in custom bookcases), and BIC M-SR6 in the ceiling for the rears

I was also looking at the BIC FH6-LCR for the center but I read that horns and dome tweeters shouldnt be mixed for the best results.

What do you all think? When I was putting in my old system you all gave me great advice regarding amps/speakers. Thanks in advance!smile.gif

The BICs for sure over the much smaller Take satellites. You'll get a fuller sound with bookshelf speakers over small satellites with a small cabinet and 3" woofers.

I went from Takes to a set of bookshelf speakers and it was a HUGE upgrade. I wouldnt go back to using satellites again.

If you're going to get the FH6 LCR either get three of them to use as front speakers or find some matching bookshelf speakers with horn tweeters too.

I saw those...but that is starting to get too up there in price (I am remodeling a kitchen which is a complete gut, a bathroom, putting in a whole nother bathroom, and the den). Need to stay under $400 total for everything if possible.

Can I run the 6 ohm load on the Yamaha listed (it states it is an 8 ohm receiver)? Also, floorspeakers are out especially with our 1 year old running around!smile.gif Why would I need 3 pairs of the bookshelf speakers?

To AFROGT---would horns be overkill for the fronts with the room being the size that it is?

That Yamaha can easily handle 6ohm or 8ohm speakers.

If you want a 7.1 system you need 6 speakers plus center and a subwoofer. If you only want a 5.1 setup then you'd only need two pair of the bookshelf speakers plus center instead of 3 pair.

Really no such thing as overkill, you can always turn down the volume. smile.gif First thing you need to decide if speakers with horn tweeters are for you. They can be bright sounding to some people. Go to your local Best Buy and listen to some Klispch speakers to get an idea.

The Pioneers are excellent budget speakers, but they are not going to play very loud compared to the Bic Formula series. So if you think you'll want over 95db of output, go with three of the FH-6s across the front, and get a pair of Pioneers for the surround channels. When your budget allows get a couple more FH-6s to replace the pioneers. The horns on the BIC speakers are not as harsh as the Klipsch speakers because they don't use compression drivers. So even a lot of people who do not like the horn sound still like BIC horns.

Agreed, I have not heard the BIC's but have heard the Take's and the Pioneer's and the Pioneers, to me, win hands down.

If you are putting speakers in custom bookcases - then I would look at front ported
or sealed speakers.

Just saw these:SP-BS22-LR and SP-C22 by Pioneer. They are supposed to be an update for the Pioneers listed above and still designed by Andrew Jones (even a rookie like me knows who he is!) What do you think of them?

I've only heard the older models (which are quite good), but people seem to be loving the newer ones more.

If you look around in the last couple of months of the owners thread for the Andrew Jones Pioneer speakers, you'll find some testimonials to that effect.

I am also considering using the C22 with BS41's for the fronts and BS22 for the rears. Dont care for how the 41's look, but they are supposed to sound "fuller" than the 22's. Looks like a trip to Best Buy is in the future to try them out.

Best Buy doesn't sell the BS-41 but they do sell all the other Pioneer models. They never sold the 41 even when all the other first edition Andrew Jones speakers were available. Your best bet is Newegg for the BS-41 and probably for the FS-51, C21 or BS-21.

Best Buy might have some stock left of the older series but they're pushing the new BS-22, C22 and FS-52 models now.

Just hate to buy the 41's but then realize the 22's would have been just as good. Dont want to buy speakers without trying them out first.

One of the reasons we end up recommending the first series is because of the ridiculous deals you can get on them through newegg.com. They are constantly going on sale for as much as 50% off their already low price....so from a value perspective the first series is a much better deal because of the sales. Andrew Jones stated the main improvement for the second series was sensitivity, but I'm not sure how much he was able to increase it over the first series.
