Can a receiver upscale movie files from a computer?

I'm trying to decide whether I should get the Denon AVR-1913 or AVR-1613. The 1913 has 1080p upscaling where as the 1613 doesn't. I will have my computer hooked up via HDMI to the receiver, and I'm wondering if a 720p MKV file from my computer will get upconverted to 1080p.

A little off-topic is that I'm looking for a sub-$500 receiver. Are either of these Denons a good fit or should I go with something else? I'm planning to buy the Pioneer SP-BS41-LR.

Thanks!

Your TV may have a better scaler than the Denon 1913. Experiment connecting the PC with both and see which looks better.

either receiver would work fine with the Pioneer speakers.

I just recently bought some crappy Element 50" 1080p LCD. Assuming that the TV's scaler is worse, is getting the 1913 a no-brainer or is the difference between 720p vs upscaled 1080p pretty negligible?

When you watch TV shows in 720p vs 1080i can you tell the difference?

NBC and CBS broadcast in 1080i,
ABC, FOX and ESPN broadcast in 720p

Different stations, different compression, different programming, de-interlacing involved, not a valid comparison between 720p and 1080i, or between broadcast material and ripped mkv.

Video card may also upscale, if that's the case, compare with same material from PC.

Generally for a 50' screen you need to sit no more than 8' to resolve 1080p.

The scaler on the Denon isn't any one of the big names anyway to get excited about. Even when scaling is better than 'crappy' TV's it's not the only thing that's important for a great picture.
