Replacement speakers for an older set of sony towers?

So for the past two days I've been looking to replace my 10" woofers in my Sony towers. The foam on both speakers has dry rotted and fell off. The problem I'm having is finding a good set of replacements. It seems everywhere I look I'm finding lots of car audio subs, but I'm worried about them producing the same range of sound the Sony's produced. Is there any website that specializes in home theater speakers? Can I use just any pioneer or Sony Xplode sub to replace these?

For the time being I ordered a pair of these, but after some additional research I don't have much hope for them. Since it seems pyramid is known for poor quality products.

You are really headed down a fruitless path. Woofer speakers are VERY finicky. The size of the speaker cabinet and port are engineered to compliment the performance of a particular driver which were all known at the time the speaker was designed. Grabbing an aftermarket driver and screwing it in your cabinet will be a crap shoot. Another issue is that the crossover may have included some compensation for the particular driver that was used.

one good source for drivers is Parts Express.

You might take this question up to the DIY speaker building section of the forum where there are some guys who know how to select a driver if you tell them the interior cabinet volume, port length and diameter.

Another alternative would be to have parts-express.com refoam your existing drivers. $37.75 each plus shipping.

If your wallet permits it my be a good time for you to upgrade to new tower speakers.

Thanks for the replys. I think I'm just going to go the refoaming route, since that seems like the easiest and best possible way to fix this system.
