I agree with you on that. The ability to freely tweak channel level setting on-the-fly is a teriffic feature. If the receiver also memorizes them, even better!
That means you could have different channel level settings for independent sources/soundmodes if you desire.
Canno't figure out why they've removed that feature on new models confused.gif

That said there is really no reason to try and override these tones with an external calibration disc. Part of what Audyssey does is calibrate the levels for you, so if all you want to do is check the balance the internal test tones are the way to go.

You CAN change channel levels without going into the GUI if you use the web interface.

Alternately, if you have a programmable universal (URC, Harmony, etc) you can add discrete channel level commands to the remote.

Is that what those "hex codes" are for? I saw something about that once.
I'm still confused on how to program those codes to the remote (I have the Logictec Harmony 900 - would it work on that one?).

Thanks to Mike at av science for the great service when my 4520 showed up with a dead left surround channel. He shipped a replacement out to me the day I called him and told him there was a problem and didn't wait for me to send the defective one back.

I don't think any of the unauthorized sellers on ebay would have done that.

I noticed in the showroom they only had about 2 inches on top and 1 inch along the sides (no idea about the back). If I leave 2 inches open at the top and sides and leave the back totally open will that be enough? If not should I get a fan?

This is an excerpt from page 3 of the owner's manual:

For proper heat dispersal, do not install this unit in a confined space, such as a bookcase or similar enclosure.
• More than 12 in. (0.3 m) is recommended.
• Do not place any other equipment on this unit.

Good afternoon.
I already bought an AVR-4520CI Receiver. I made Audyssey process
And setup with not issues. Everything went fine. Next day, i turned on the receiver
And I dont receive any signal on the screen receiver.(completely dark)
I did DIM CYCLE PROCESS with not result.
Also Microprocessor reboot process.
Any advices to solve this issue?
Thanks for your attention and promptly response.
Saludos cordiales,

Ditto to Mike and their service department..Same situation here, other than the issue was I had no 2nd or 3rd Zones .I think we are the 3rd or maybe 4th people to have to get a replacement unit???That's a high percentage considering this site only has a handful of opps. Kind of makes you wonder about their quality control/checkout procedure.

+1. I doubt this is the result of a drop by the UPS driver. It's pretty daunting to think about considering I am ready to pull the trigger with the 4520, and am avoiding Onkyo for these very similar quality control issues. What has the home theater world come to if you can't buy a $2K receiver and get a working unit.

Not really as most folks only find there way here if they have a problem or questions so you'll find a higher percentage of defects noted on the forum than as it relates to actual defect rates, while the many that have neither have no reason to post. smile.gif

Try doing another microprocessor reset, ensuring the front panel display lights up and flashes for at least 4-5 seconds before releasing the buttons being pressed on the front panel.

Thanks Jdsmoothie for your advice.
I will try it later.
Will let you know the results.
Thanks again.

denon isn't really known for having qc issues and, to my knowledge, the 4520 isn't getting a lot of complaints. mike told me that he's sold hundreds of these things and has only had problems with three, mine being the third. given the size and weight of the box these things come in, i think that's a really decent ratio. i've been in the back of a ups loading hub before and they tend not to be very nice to boxes like this.

my advice is to go with an authorized dealer and you'll be fine. i could have gotten it cheaper, but after looking at denon's somewhat vague and definitely ambiguous warranty disclaimer for purchases from unauthorized dealers, i decided that any problem with a defective unit wouldn't be worth the hassle.

glad i did, too.

I realized your advices.
It is not working yet.
Any other advices to try?
Please let me know.

So, where are the professional or not so professional reviews of this receiver? I am particularly interested in its sound for stereo music.

At least two iPhone apps can change levels on the fly, DeRemote and Denonoff. The first is better; more options and has a fullscreen iPad mode too. Never saw a real use for it, but for some, there is! I only used it once recently to check whether channel levels where set to 0dB in analog in mode on the 4520. Setting them all to 0dB was easy on previous models. Maybe this is a solution for you, at least cheaper than another remote, as long as you own an iPhone. Don't know about android.
There is a new option to set center level dialog level, probably better than only make it a little louder.

Exchange it for another unit.

Turned on my 4520 today and noticed it had a new firmware update. Anyone know what is included in this update? This is the second one I have got since purchasing it about a month ago.

Here is a very recent, very favorable AVR-4520 review from Home Cinema Choice magazine, march issue.

Certainly a positive review which I especially appreciate because I own one but it's short on objective measurements.

+1... doesn't resolve the issue on a weak power section in my 4520...
Am alternating between an Emotiva XPA -3 and my MF A 5.5 stereo amp... plus a Rotel 1572 for the sides...

Yes but I use it as a pre-pro. I have an XPA-3 and two other Emo amps. I recommend the XPA-3 highly although the XPA-5 is a better buy.

Here are two more favorable (German) reviews of the AVR-4520 from AreaDVD and Audio. Just use an online translator, if needed.
(apologies if anyone already posted these earlier on)

I noticed the Emotiva XPA-3 is back on sale for $599 vs. normal retail $699 and am again going through my usual crisis of conscience about buying one.  My problem is that I tend to side with those who believe an amp is mostly an improvement when the AVR runs out of steam to drive your speakers and not just for sonic improvement.  In my situation, even with my very large room (20 X 32) and 11.2 speaker setup, I don't really feel like I am lacking power.  I don't need to run the volume on the 4520 anywhere near reference for satisfying sound volume and usually have it set at -18db.  My SVS sub and the powered subs in my DefTech towers work well together and I am using a Pioneer Elite AVR to power the extra 2 channels that the 9 amps in the 4520 don't handle.  Ponder, ponder.

I could imagine, that they start to fade out the XPA lines of amps, similar to the way they faded out the older UPAs, because this reduction is out of step with the rest.
I would consider either a somewhat more expensive upgrade to a newer amp line replacing the XPAs or having the XPRs taking their place.
But that doesn't degrade the XPA-3 in any way...

Just think, only $599 buys you a good night's sleep.  Priceless!  wink.gif

+1 The XPA-3 is highly recommended and a tremendous value. Think of it as an insurance policy to future proofing your system in case you upgrade your system to power hungry speakers.
