Sounds like your BP is doing the decoding; make sure BP is set to "bitstream" and "bitstream downmix" is set to "off".

Yes it should if you have your Settings right on the Source,you probably have your Blu Ray setup to LPCM in stead of Bitstream either way your getting the Codec press info on your Blu Ray

That was another bad memory from my Onkyo days. I could not bitstream DTS-HD Master from the blu-ray player because of the "DTS bomb" tongue.gif the Onkyo unit was known for...I always had to use PCM.

While I know many on this thread seem to have had a rough experience with Onkyo, after owning a TX-SR805, TX-SR875, TX-NR3007, and TX-NR3008, the good far outweighed the bad. I always bitstreamed the lossless codecs and never had any issues. In addition, I sold my 805, 875 and a few weeks ago my 3008 all locally and all three are still going strong.

I did have issues with the TX-NR3007 which was a B-Stock. It was replaced with an A-Stock TX-NR3008 that had no issues in the almost 2 years I owned it. I definitely am not missing the relay clicking when going from DD/DTS to a PCM source/ I suppose you get so acclimated to something like that over the years that when switching over to something that does not make such noises the silence is truly golden.

I guess because people think it's normal to spend a thousand or three on a receiver every 18 to 30 months is why onkyo can keep cranking out receivers that won't last and stay in buisiness. Good job ruining it for those of us who don't poop money

you have actually bought more than a 3007 that was B stock right?

..and I have never understood why you continually buy receivers and use them for preamps....when Onkyo/Integra preamps are readily available

I am not sure...with Onkyo...that the failure rate was any higher ( or lower)with A or B stock

At least that has not been the case in my ownership of their products in the last 6 years.....both A&B stock have had the same amount of issues

Onkyo has replaced a few units under warranty

I have never spent a dime..other than shipping to a repair facility

I doubt anyone thinks its normal

They just make a heck of a product at a great price point

That in itself will move product

Many have been burned and will never touch one again.......and I would be the same way if I had ever had to pay for of the various repairs my Onkyos have needed
Bottom line...if you go Onkyo buy the extended warranty..it will be your friend

On another note....I am actually VERY interested in the new Marantz pre/pro....which I hear is based on the Denon 4520.......to replace my Onkoy 5508 pre/pro

Though for $3500..I am not interested

A question for those who know. Which has better video processing, the Denon or a Panasonic 65VT50? I am trying to decide on which VP to use for up scaling. Thanks for any help.

You will need an external amp for the extra two channels.

Does the 4520 support HEC on both the HDMI input and output ports? Can a smart TV that supports HEC get its internet from the 4520 via the HDMI connection?

When an AVR is rated as 150W/9 CH it doesn't mean that 150W is available with all 9 CH playing, rather as I noted in my previous post likely closer to 70W/CH. The rating a mfr markets for an AVR is generally only powering 2CH and not all 5, 7, or 9. Yes, you can use the 2809CI to add those additional 2 CH (as already indicated you MUST use external amplification to go from 9.2 to 11.2).

Sorry I am kind of newbie at this ... But I just purchased the Denon AVR-4520CI. My home is set up with 5.1 in the main media room, 2 stereo speakers thru the house, and 2 stereo speakers outside. How should I be hooking up the speakers on this receiver to setup the 3 zones? The 5.1 part is pretty obvious, so my main question is regarding zones 2/3. Thanks.

Have a look at the VT50 owner's thread in the Plasma section. There are a lot of users that prefer the processing from an AVR over the VT50.

I do not have the 4520...yet, but I have an older Onkyo 3007 and for 1080i sources the receiver does a much better job up scaling than the Panasonic (I have a 65VT50 and a 60ST50). When the Panny does it it looks very "Soft" and sometimes grainy. Sorry, I am not a videophile, so only giving my opinion of the resultant picture that I saw.

It would actually be very easy for you to test as the receiver should have a "Through" setting that should pass the signal to the TV untouched.

Has a firmware update been issued to take care of the one audio issue I read about before (do not remember it exactly, I think it had to do with using heights and/or wides with one HD codec)? A friend just asked me which receivers I would recommend and knowing the status of this would help. Denon is known for their firmware updates, so I know it will be fixed sooner than later, but I am not sure if it has already been fixed or not.

Even though I have been burned by Denon for a MainCPU board failure mere weeks outside of the warranty period, I am over the immediate pain of it and know they are a good brand, even if I am now an Onkyo owner.

Just put the newest film ware update in a 2 week old unit. This is the 2nd one, as when I took it out of box it showed one being available and I went ahead and put it in ...This one took 40 minutes. 4 for " Main" update, 4 for " Sub" update, and 33 minutes for " GUI" ...whatever that is...
I can't tell you what changes it made,as the TV took a crap today and I had to order a new one.(7 year old plasma 50 inch LG that the power supply has went out of twice in 6 months) I ordered a Panasonic VIERA TC-P55VT50 55-Inch 1080p Full HD 3D Plasma TV...I was not expecting to be buying a TV today,but you never know ...............

2. Note that if you purchased with a credit card, some card providers will add an extra year of warranty (Amex will for sure as will some MC/Visa).

The Marantz 8801 is identical in just about every way to the 4520. The manuals are even the same. Go to the specs pages from both to compare their listed features and sonic results.

Also see my post below regarding the DACs. Save yourself $1100.

if that is the only difference...then it sounds like D&M Holdings is really trying to pad their bottom line

on another note....since the 8801 is not truly fully balanced one would think that the deduction of the amps and the addition of the quasi balanced outputs would be a wash in price...and it would be( or near) the same price as the 4520

The 3007 was the only B-Stock Onkyo I ever purchased. I spent around $1200 after taxes when I picked up the TX-SR805 at Stereorama in Tampa-St.Pete within days of the 805's release. I actually paid about the same for the 875.

As to why I have used AVR's as SSP's is due to me swapping out AVR/SSP's pretty often and I have a number of friends down here that are always interested in purchasing my equipment and most of my friends do not have more than at best a 2 channel amplifier.

With the Onkyo/Integra SSP's being pretty much identical to the AVR's with the exception of having XLR's, I just have never seen the advantage. I have demoed a Meridian and Classe SSP at home, but was not honestly that impressed.
