Doesn't the setting really depend on the capabilities of the speaker itself? While I wouldn't dispute a Bose satellite speaker from being set to "small" instead of "large", I don't know a lot of people that run their full range three-way mains as small.
People who read AVS postings extensively should know by now that all
speakers should be set to "Small" for several reasons.
1. "Small" is a misleading description. It actually means "Enable bass management".
2. Quality subwoofers provide a much more accurate low frequency response than even the best floor standing speakers.
3. By diverting the lowest frequencies to a subwoofer, you're reducing the strain on the woofers, and minimizing the resulting sonic distortions.
4. Woofers require the most power. By diverting the low frequencies to a self-powered subwoofer, you're substantially off-loading your amps or receiver, which provides additional headroom for the upper frequencies.
