What other brands are you considering?

Well, BB took mine back and as another, brand new unit coming to me in 7 days. Hopefully this one will be trouble free.

It was a nice unit , I think Im going to order a DHC-80.3 unless I can find a deal on a 80.2

I just listed my 4520 and I will be listing matching player also .

Has anyone tried using this receiver with Air Video? I can see the Denon on the list of devices but it will only play sound. I'm trying to strean content from my computer via airplay and generally do this via an apple tv but was hoping to be able to do the same directly through the Denon.

Integra has already listed the 70.4 for 2013. I believe a 80.4 should be around shortly.

^^^ @ chadspad -- Can't do it, no video streaming. Specifically with Airplay, Apple hasn't licensed the video streaming capability to any non-Apple devices. But it's a moot point because the receiver doesn't stream video anyway.

Integra 70.4 or the rumored 80.4. Doesn't look as pretty as the Denon but the reliability seems better from my read of the forums. And I see a few posts up someone else is talking Integra as well.

Now that you mention it, I don't believe I have ever read one negative post on any forum about Integra. It's almost strange.

Do those problems affect Integra too? I always thought that was just limited to the Onkyo side of the house. The one reason I have been avoiding Onkyo is because of all their known issues.

Not sure how these posts are applicable to the Denon 4520 Thread.

My experience has been nothing but positive, from the purchase to the setup to the functionality. I put in the Dave Matthews/Tim Renolds bluray into my player and had a religious experience the sound was so beautiful. Like many have said before it is common for the few 4520 owners who are having issues to frequent this thread looking for answers. I think most 4520 owners are enjoying their systems and don't have the time to tell a forum full of 4520 owners (who are enjoying their systems) that they're enjoying their systems.smile.gif

I have had a very positive experience with the 4520 as well. It sounds great, and has all the features I could ask for. If I could ask for anything it's a couple of more HDMI inputs on the rear panel for future-proofing.
My 4520 has been flawless..and I never use hdmi control on all my hdmi connected devices.. it runs very cool too..
My AVR-4520 has been performing beautifully also since I got it in October. So potential buyers, don't be scared by the negative points mentioned on this forum. I have yet to see a product without any bugs.

The only small issue I have on mine is with firmware updates. For the last two updates, I did a network save prior to the update and then the update failed. After that, my receiver was always saying I had the latest version even if it was clearly not the case. The first time it did that, it took almost two weeks and a power outage before the receiver finally realized that Oh wait there is a new version available! Last update did exactly the same but it has been out since only a couple of days now and my receiver still thinks I have the latest even if it had notified me of an update once. I tried disconnecting the power for a while, disabling network standby, etc. still not able to get the latest.

I didn't call tech support yet but I will if I still can't download the new update in a couple of days.

So I don't know if the issue is created because I do a network save first, but I hope it gets resolved soon. I seem to be the only one having this issue though.

Anyway, except for that little annoyance, well plus the fact that sometimes I have to restore my settings after an update, I have nothing but good things to say about this product.

I agree completely, I have been using my AVR-4520 for 3 months now without any issues at all, it has worked perfectly. I also have 3 other Denon receivers in various rooms ( AVR-2808, AVR-2310, AVR-1610), and all have worked perfectly from day one, no issues at all.

I have not had the chance to listen to the Dave Matthews/Tim Renolds bluray ( not available in Australia), but I have played the CD of the same concert on my Denon DBT3313- VAF i33 speakers combo and the experience for me was much the same ( except no video). The sound was indeed wonderful. The same applies to any of my CD's that I have listened to, it is almost like I have never heard them properly before, the clarity and definition is amazing. Probably the combination of the 3 new items , as a whole ( AVR-4520, DBT-3313, VAF i33 speakers).

Keep up the +ve comments.

I am hoping that the new replacement I get will hold up perfectly. I have always like Denon products, so it will be settling if it works out. Seems hard to find anything, or any quality or price level, that won't have issues.
I don't have the 4520 but have been following this thread. Like some others here that have the A100/4311, I did not think it was worth upgrading at the moment (maybe the next iteration Denon comes out with). But, I did want to chime in on the dependability issue. IMO, many that come to sites like this are only because they have issues. I have family members that have Denon's that never had issues, as with mine. My A100 has been flawless for 2 years (dedicated media room). I also have, in different rooms in the house: 2312, 2311, 2310, and 2308 all with no issues ever (all different rooms - bedrooms, living room, kids room).. My family (brothers) have the 3313 (x2), 3312, 4310, 1912, 1612, again, none with any issues and have been working great since installed. Just our experience with Denon. I do understand that all manufactures will have issues (at least a % of the stock since they are rapidly made on an assembly line - and IMO transportation issues - who knows how they are handled from over seas to your doorstep/store front.)

USB Firmware Updates – North American Denon AVR units only

Although the firmware update issues seem to be more of a problem with the XX13 models, if you are having difficulty loading the latest firmware to your 4520CI, please PM me after reading and agreeing with the disclaimer noted below and I will provide you with the file to load via USB.

Disclaimer:
This firmware is for use with North American Denon AVR units only. Feel free to use it under the condition that it not be forwarded to other individuals and is for your personal use only. It is provided with the understanding that you will “use it at your own risk” and it comes without any implied warranty from D&M. You agree that D&M will not be held responsible for any damages to your unit resulting from the inappropriate use of this firmware or from updating the unit in an improper way. As this update being provided to you is not supported by D&M, should you have any installation issues, please do not call Denon customer service for support as they will be unable to assist you.

After downloading and unzipping the provided .zip file, you will find a “firmwares” folder and a Word document which provides instructions on how to install the firmware update. The “firmwares” folder must be moved to an “empty” FAT16/FAT32 formatted 2GB (or larger) USB memory stick. Note that should you have any issues with the update, you may have to reset the unit’s microprocessor after doing the update so prior to installing the update, be sure to copy the unit’s on board configuration file to a PC using the Web Control SAVE feature.

Also, if you haven't already, please review the following post on the SAVE/LOAD procedure ....

I contemplated going the 4520 plus DenonLink player route too. But the problems I had with my 4010 prompted me to drop the idea so I ended up with the 8801 Marantz.

When everything works perfectly people rarely post about it...why post what is expected? When people have problems, they post for either help or to complain. This is why problems will always be more noticed than proper operation.
Likewise here, very happy, no issue with my 4520. Never upgraded the firmware.
Happy users tend to remain quiet.
But if anyone wants to read, I did post about the 4520 in my blog in my signature...

As said many times people with issues post, happy campers don't.

I'm a happy camper, 4520CI since December.

Woof, I'm very interested in your thoughts on any SQ differences going from 4311/4010 via DenonLink vs the 8801.

Popped up on the TV that a Denon Update was available last night. I went ahead and clicked "Yes install". It posted that it would take 10 minutes. It updated " Main" ,then "Sub" ,then Either". What was odd was, it had counted down to 3 minutes when it started on the "either".It then went to 2 minutes, then 1. But then it jumped back up to 3 and started counting down again.Back down to 1 minute, then back to 3 .It did this 4 or 5 times. I finally tried to shut it off. It would not shut off, but on the next "cycle" it started scrolling Stars instead of Arrows. It then came up "update installed" and powered itself down. All seems well. Anybody know what the latest updated software did.I know I now have color equalizer readouts on the audicy even though I'm not using them. I don't think they were there before.

A summary of the changes in various FW updates is contained in post #4 of this thread, courtesy of JDSmoothie.

The behavior you observed (multiple Ether updates in succession) is consistent with my experience.  I have learned to be patient during these upgrades, and in this case everything finished successfully.  You can check the current FW version in the Info section of the menu, and compare it with the number in post #4 to be certain you are current.

I am one of the happy campers with nothing negative to say.

I've paired the Denon DBT-3313UDCI with the 4520 and could not be any happier with no issues at all. Just got the new Rush 2112 remaster for Blu-ray and was in total bliss! If you are a Rush fan, the animations that tell the story along with the music are pretty cool.

The latest FW updates took much longer than stated for me also on both units. I try not to get too anxious and just relax and let it do its thing.
