I do not see why people don't see my point
I love dts es and 7.1 ect and all things surround
I just would like to have the choice to hear it as it was mixed
You can set dolby to 5.1 or 7.1 with ease on this amp
Not with DTS

Sure you can, just have to have a dts source playing. Then you may select ES MTRX in lieu of on.
Ok
My amp will not let me play sound in dts 5.1 with out going into speaker settings and turning back surround to off
You can flip from dolby 5.1 to 7.1 with the remote button and back again

That is my point
it will if you press & hold the MOVIE button, page 84 of your owner's manual
post #3635 of 4870
Don't forget that if you have your speakers optimally placed for 7.1, the side surround speakers are not optimally placed when you're listening to only 5.1: they're too far forward.
I have dts Apollo 13 playing DTS sound
Movie button set to dts surround
It still plays with 7.1 sound
If I play it in dolby I can get the movie button to play 5.1 or 7.1 with out going into the speaker set up

It forces you to play Dts with all speakers if you have a 7.1 set up

It is about choice or not havering it
I love the amp and the sound
However denon has limited our choices
Did you HOLD Down the MOVIE button ?
If so check hdmi/audio settings on Brd player
post #3639 of 4870
Yes I hold down the button until on screen display comes up
Choose dts surround and 7.1 sound only
Or stereo changes to speaker sound
Mine gives more choices, what make & model Blu ray?
It is a Panasonic 310 I have switched back up mix off for 7.1 sound
It plays dolby in 5.1 and can switch to 7.1
Not in DTS mode
You can get dts surround (7.1)
Or stereo or back on ect
You can get It to give you 5.1 speakers on the amps front display
Maybe I will do a reset on the amp

Sancho,

Are you actually in front of your 4520 testing out a DTS-HD MSTR 5.1 movie as you are responding?  Well I am, and the choices available when you press and hold the Movie button are:

- Stereo

- DTS-HD MSTR

- DTS-HD + PLII Cinema

- DTS-HD + PLIIz

- NEO:X Cinema

All of these modes have the surround back speakers ON.  I even have my Harmony remote programmed with the command from my 4311 that toggles the surround back speakers on and off, and the command does not work when playing a DTS-HD MSTR disk.

So, AFAICT, you are wrong and howard68 is correct--no way to easily disable the surround rears.  HST, this is a nitpick, and has been discussed way too long.  Can we move on now?

Ok thanks
I will live with it as the amp sounds so good
Will move on now
Thanks again
My amp is working normally

it's the settings on his BRD player: from page 30 of his owner's manual:

[BDT310] [BDT215] [BDT210]
Surround sound with 6.1ch or less is automatically
expanded and played back at 7.1ch.

Does that apply to bitstream though? Or only when the player decodes to multich PCM?
Good points, think he needs to check his settings...his manual is not clear & I don't own that model...

NO, 3312, good point, but he seems to have less choices than that.

I don't think this has anything to do with it.  For the test I described earlier, the 4520 Audio Information screen in the GUI showed that it was receiving a DTS-HD MSTR 5.1 audio stream.  FWIW, I am outputting Blu-ray as DSD from an Oppo BDP-93.  Can we move on?

Anyway to do a master volume control for all zones on the 4520ci at the same time? The all zone stereo/party mode function just appears to set all zones to the same source and to stereo but does not turn off indepedent zone volumes. I have a big open loft with zones 2 and 3 hooked up in addition to my main TV surround zone and find when I am listening to music I want uniform volume throughout the common areas of my house. Thanks.
What is the easiest way to turn multi-zone off? Couldn't see it in the manual.

I occasionally find it useful to use the InstaPrevue feature. This will not work when Zone 4 is active. I have been pressing Zone Select on the remote and hitting power button to turn them off. Though they keep turning back on - perhaps when coming out of the unit's standby mode? Admittedly, my 22 month old occasionally gets hold of the remote, so could be him.

I note on the front display it advises multi zone, so is there an easier way to keep these off (until I set up my zone 2, at least)?

I just got this box today and if nothing else Denon has made this probably the easiest AVR to set up I've ever seen. I had it set up and calibrated within an hour and a half. I also updated the firmware (3325-8733-3492) which I was a little nervous about after reading about some issues with the update process. Denon estimated 43 minutes and it took just about exactly that. Since my 3311 died last week I haven't watched any movies so I'm psyched to play with this sucker tonight. smile.gif
What I'm not looking forward to is changing the Harmony One. I haven't changed anything on that in almost a year and I've forgotten everything.

Strange thing happened when I got my new turntable (Marantz TT15S1 Reference Series).

When I cranked up the volume to near reference (since the phono input is so much quieter then the hdmi inputs for some reason), the turntable would HUM at 0db when I touched the carbon arm.

If I touched the metal nothing would happen.

So obviously I thought a grounding issue with the marantz, so I double checked everything, pulled out the multi meter, verified the ground paths, everything was fine. Hum still was present when I touched the carbon arm (only noticeable from -15db getting louder as approaching 0db).

I thought obviously a defective unit, so off I went to the dealer. We checked their unit, and it was not exhibiting the same noise situation (plugged into a Marantz AVR).

Here is where things get strange. I asked to hook my turntable up to their unit, and sure enough at 0db, no noise on their setup.

We tried another AVR, same result no noise.

So when I got home , I hooked everything BACK up , verified continuity between the ground paths. Sure enough, it HUMS at 0db when touching the carbon arm.

Anyone have an idea? Just an interior phono stage?

Does anyone have a turntable where they could try this out with their AVR-4520ci, and see their results?

When I played a record for the first time today I had very bad hum using the same connections that worked perfectly with the 3311. When I grounded directly to the receiver it went away so I had to run a 30' ground wire from the AVR to the turntable. It was a nuisance because I had to redo everything in these PITA raceway covers but it did eliminate the hum. So are you grounded directly to the receiver? Also, this phono input is not dead silent like the 3311 was. At reference there is still some minor noise but it's listenable (is that a word?).

Interesting viewpoint. Have you seen a flagship product like this have so many random issues, or is this normal for every product?

On a side note, what do you think of the news that Panasonic may end their plasma TV production next year?

I have the same problem with my Audio Technica ATLP120 direct drive turntable. There is no ground connection on it. So, I ended up using turning on the turntable's built-in amp and used the CD input on the receiver. Is there something else I could have done?

All,

Quick question for 4520 owners ... What is the minimum distance you recommend between the rear of the 4520 and the back panel of an AV cabinet to allow for adequate space for cable connections? I'm restricted to a 22" height cabinet and the cabinet model I like that meets this requirement (Stand Out Design's Majestic) is only 20" deep. I've not purchased a receiver in a long while so I'm not sure how much space with HDMI and Cat 5 connections, etc. I will need to have without crimping the cables behind the receiver. Sorry if this has been previously discussed but I've tried searching this thread and other sources but haven't been able to find anything related. Thx much for any feedback. Btw, the info on this forum has been great.

I just measured my installation.  From the front of the faceplate to the back of the AVR is 15".  I have 5" between the back of the AVR and the rear wall of the cabinet.  This is plenty of room for the cables, IMO.  I use typical Blue Jeans cables.  So, I would think a 20" depth would be OK for you as well.

I am not familiar with that cabinet, but make sure you have enough clearance all around for ventilation.  The shelf my 4520 sits on is 11" high--the AVR is 8", so I have 3" of clearance on top, which is adequate.  My sides are completely open, so airflow is not an issue.
