As a side note, when you were experimenting, how did you like the sound of EXT-IN (which defeats Audyssey RC) compared with HDMI input?
You know what, the Oppo menu makes it extremely easy to flip from PCM to DSD, so as I listened to Dark Side Of The Moon and some various Jazz pieces, I honestly thought they both sounded very good. I will definitely not say one sounded superior to the other, and I could EASILY live with either implementation. Where the Oppo sounds extremely crisp and detailed, the bass management is just too good with Audyssey. Simply put, even when changing the crossover on the Oppo from 80 to 40hz (the lowest setting on the Oppo), I thought the bass was much better handled on the Denon.
In the end, the Denon is extremely clean as well on DSD, don't get me wrong. I would have to say that from my memory of the source music I was playing, the Oppo might have sounded a bit "cleaner" in analog (not a big shocker). However, overall I think Audyssey does a damn good job with the lower frequencies, enough so that I will probably continue to listen in DSD mode from now on, but I will continue to test this more. One of the tracks that really blew me away was "Money" on DSOTM, especially the way multichannel sounded. However, I only listened to that on DSD. I will need to continue to explore PCM with my more favorite tracks before making a final conclusion.
Like I said, I cannot definitively state there were dramatic differences between either, and am sure I would be completely satisfied using either PCM or DSD. I should also mention for the record that this was my first serious music playback session since getting the Denon a couple months back; I've been enjoying movie playback way too much. Have you dabbled at all with the Oppo analog or any other SACD playback?
By the way, you're right about configuring the macro. One of my friends that has a Harmony did the same thing with his. I actually haven't gotten around to getting my Harmony up to date, but that will be the first thing I get to. Hopefully sooner than later otherwise I will just keep DSD full-time
