I recently bought an x4000, attempting to upgrade from a 4308, but wound up returning it. There were positives: in a 5.1 paradigm setup with studio 20 fronts, XT32 seemed impressive -- the sound field seemed much more 3 dimensional and some of the sounds seemed more defined (the sound of a train, for example, on one blue-ray I was watching, seemed more realistic and full on the x4000.) However, I could never get dialog in the center channel to sound as natural and clear as on the 4308. I also noticed the sound quality, sometimes, in other circumstances, did not seem as good on the X4000 - for instance playing the opening credits song of Kill Bill 1, there seemed to be a dramatic advantage in musicality in the 4308. After running audyssey many times over a day, trying to find a different result, as well as playing with center channel settings, I gave up on it, returned it, and went back to the 4308.
Based on what I previously read here, though, I'm wondering if I might have done something wrong. Audyssey was run the same for both receivers - 8 positions, as recommended. And I reviewed all faqs. I'm also wondering whether to try a 4520 instead, although from what I understand here, I should expect similar results between the two. Any thoughts or recommendations going forward, other than just sticking with what I have for a while? I am still interested in the benefits xt32 can give. I probably should have asked here first, before returning, as well, but I was too frustrated with the experience I was having with it.
