Does the HX950 use the same corning gorilla glass as the HX929? If it doesn't have the same glossy panel then I can understand it not 'popping' as much. I've read some reviews on this model and the only thing having me worried is the talk about this one having more glare reduction. This to me means semi-matte and if that's the case I may have to pass in favor of the 929 since I don't find them as attractive.

Sony usually post Firmware info on SonyStyle site about a week (or so) after it's launch. (usually listed in SUPPORT area).

So you update and then find out if you got screwed? Not a good idea.

Screwed ?? How? I have taken at least 7 + firmware offerings and never had a problem (one very minor which was quickly & completely resolved). BTW I take all my firmwares via hard-wired.

I'm reluctant because the last firmware on the 950 made the motion a little twitchy and the menus seemed slower to respond.

I am trying to get a "pass through" of the dolby to my receiver. Hdmi sound to tv optical output. It does not work correctly. Sometimes it works if I played netflix 5.1. It seems to have memory and/or odd fw behavior. If

I'd say go with it. The 55 doesnt seem to have issues.

I just tested a 65" at BB for dead/stuck pixels. There were none and I thought i saw some banding on the set but it wasnt clearly viewable. I will be ordering another 65 from best buy and see if that has no issues otherwise both go back frown.gif

Does anyone have a pattern that I can use to test for Banding ?

I have a 1920 x 1080p grey only wallpaper. Im not sure what percent of black/white the image is, but if someone can point me to the right direction that will be very helpful.

Thanks

Flavius - Have you noticed Halo 4's video mode in Spartan Ops ? Whenever I play a movie, the brightness goes really high and I see the black bars on the top and bottom.

Also does anyone played Assassin's Creed 3 and notice black dots/pixels during gameplay and on characters at times ? Just trying to rule out any settings that I have turned on the tv that's causing this.

Thanks

I didn't notice anything wrong with Spartan Ops video but I only played the first map. I finished the main game, but am usually not big on coop. I have AC3 for the PS3, but haven't played it yet, as I'm still trying to get through Brotherhood and Revelations on 360. HUGE HUGE backlog problems over here.

That said, I think your issues are game related, not TV related.

Are the 950s out of stock everywhere? On BestBuy website both models say coming soon and my local ABC Warehouse had them in stock but out right now...isn't even listed on the website

I know a month ago they ran out briefly. But perhaps the holidays have stock running low or Somy has decided to check the quality of these units and are shipping fewer units.

FYI

DIAGNOSTIC CODE DESCRIPTIONS:

2X Blink - Main Power Error
A loss of REG12V from the power supply triggers this protect event.
The usual cause is a failure of the main switching supply. In some
instances, excessive loading on the secondary supply lines can
cause the switching regulator to stop, or fail again, if a replacement
board is installed.

3X Blink- DC Regulator/Audio Error
The Audio error can occur due on of the following error conditions.
●● Defective DC Regulator on Main Board
●● Defective Audio Amplifier (Main Board)
●● Loss of AU12V (Open F4200 on Main Board)
●● Loss of AU12V (Open Fuse on Power Supply Board)
In most cases, replacement of the main board will remedy a 3X error.

4X Blink – Balancer Error
The 4X error code is only used on models incorporating local
dimming LED backlighting. If a failure occurs on the LD board or one
of the LED’s fails in the panel the TV will shut down and display this
diagnostic code. Models using conventional non-local dimming LED
backlighting do not utilize this error code.

5X Blink - TCON Error
The 5X blink protection mode indicates a communications error
between the TCON Board and the X-Reality microprocessor on the
Main Board. If the TCON is available for replacement, replace the
TCON. If the TCON is not available, the LCD panel must be replaced
since the TCON circuit is part of the LCD panel assembly. In rare
cases a loose or defective LVDS cable could also be the cause.

6X Blink - Converter System Failure
If the converter circuit (located on the power supply or separate
converter board) fails to start or shuts down due to an over-voltage
or over-current condition, the TV will shut down and generate a 6X
error code. The diagnostic page labels this as a “Backlight Failure”
even though the backlights are not the source of the problem.
Replacement of the G5 Board (46”) or G7 Board (55”) should rectify
this problem
.
7X Blink – Temperature Error
If the temperature inside the television becomes excessive, the
temperature sensor (located on the Main Board) notifies the unit
to shut down and display a 7X error. Excessive temperature errors
will always occur when the unit has been running a while and can
be caused by excessive ambient heat or improper ventilation of the
television.
If the television shuts down immediately, this can be caused by a
defective temperature sensing IC or failure of the communications
bus between the IC and the microprocessor. Replacement of the
main board is necessary.

10X Blink – IR Sync Transmitter Failure
A failure of the infrared sync transmitter circuits on the HEM2 board
will cause a 10X error and replacement of this board will usually
rectify the problem. In rare cases, the main board could be the
source of the failure.

*This is from Sony's training guide it provides a service personnel with probable malfunction/failures causes and suggested resolutions.

Flavius,

What are you using for 3D Depth Adjustment setting. I tested using Prometheus on ps3, between -1, 0, and +1.

Have you been able to get it to save the depth setting? Each time I load a movie or change scenes it reverts back to 0 as a default. Not sure if this is normal or I have just missed something. I noticed this last night on a 929. So, it may be movie/preference per movie. I thought most things looked quite a bit better balanced in/out at +1. Curious about the 950.
I'd have to double check, but it seemed to save each setting when I toggled between ps3 3D blu-ray, on demand 3D cable, ps3 games, and 2D conversion.

Over the weekend I took delivery of an XBR-65HX950 to replace a KDL-55XBR8.

I got one lit / dead pixel. Blue on black background and dead with other colors. I thought pixels were either dead or lit. Anyhow I have to be within 6 inches to see it and I sit 15 feet from the TV.

Initial impressions are very good. Default settings were almost perfect. I was really going for a screen size increase and hoping for equal or better picture quality. I was pleasantly surprised and I find it a very noticeable upgrade from the XBR8.

BlueRay and HD television look fantastic. Even the wife commented on the quality...

I'm not much of a fan of 3D. I tried watching Spiderman and found the 3d glasses really dulled the image. I ended up up watching the 2d version.

With any motion flow settings enabled I get the soap opera effect which drives me nuts, I've turned it off.

I was really worried about reflections, my TV is a very bright living room with 20 foot tall windows. The screen looks more reflective than the XBR8. But once you turn it on it performs better than XBR8.

The only flaw is banding. I've got a vertical band in the center of the screen. It's only noticeable in light colored backgrounds with panning. The center band catches your eye. Are there any settings which can minimize this effect?

For 3D change the glasses brightness from auto to medium or high. Should improve things

Not sure if you can hide banding unfortunately.

The band you are seeing is exactly why I replaced one of mine. The new one I got in the living room has a much fainter band and I won't take a bad pixel regardless if it can be seen from my sitting area or not. I know it's there and on bright content or black backgrounds you will see it.

But I'm OCD as my wife says and I think she is too passive. I just feel at 5k these sets shouldn't have this issue. And I could see the banding very well from my seat. I've got two now that are very very faint. Can't see them 90% of the time. Gaming on solid bright backgrounds panning bright areas are much more difficult to see. Try and live with it as I did, but I switched at the end of my exchange period. No pixel defects on either set either.

I just purchased the HX950 55", I have a couple questions for anyone who has some insight

1. What's the best method for findind dead pixels and other serious flaws?
2. What's the best method for calibration, (i.e. pay a "professional", Disney Wow Disc, manual settings adjustment etc.).

Re:

1. download the AVS disc and pop it in. Bring up full fields and flip through them, checking the whole screen for each color and black to white images (grayscale). Or, don't go looking for problems. Enjoy the display.
2. professional or learn how to use the tools (such as discs) as best you can and see if that is enough. If not, either hire a professional or buy lots of toys and enjoy:).

I agree 100%, unless you have a very obvious defect, do not become obsessed with hunting for problems, just set your calibration settings and enjoy.

How does one check for banding?
Anyone else experiencing this issue ?

1 - My internet content (ALL Apps) is completely gone about twice a week. Have to "Refresh" it. Takes about 5 minutes for the TV then to reget all the apps. Very annoying. Then it will just happen again in a few days :-((((

2 - Every so often I notice 1 of the settings I likes changes... its so weird. Its "Reality Creation" - I have it set to Manual, and resolution at 14-20 (pending on which input which pends therefore on content) and Noise reduction set to Min. About once a month I notice just randomly per input sometimes it changes itself to Auto, or stays on manual but puts resolution to 70. Again, very annoying.

I ALWAYS have my TV plugged into a live socket, my power is not going out, and there is nothing else I can think of that would cause this. So I was hoping I could get some input from you guys as to if anyone else noticed this too ?
