Apple quality is terrible lately. Look up MacBook Pro retina and image retention. The LCD panels they have are acting like a plasma. The second gen iPad did this as well. The new iMacs are also starting this too. They are calling this normal behavior.

I also spent 7 months after upgrading to mountain lion on my 4,000 dollar 2011 iMac to get it to run after the firmware apple put in OSX 10.8 screwed my business machines and many others up. I'm likely going after them now for damages as they don't want to own up to it.

Point is, everyone makes short cuts. Even the once great apple. They are all after one thing now, profit. It quality happens to align with this, then all the better. Personally, I hope apple never makes a TV. You really think they will put a nice panel in it, lol.

Just finished watching Samsara on the 65HX950.... One of the most stunning movies I have ever seen. Definitely not for everyone as it is from the creator of Chronos and Baraka, but it was filmed in 8k, transferred in 4k, and even in 1080p, is without a doubt the best looking bluray to date. Highly recommended to all who want to see how great our sets are!

I found the PS3 3d glasses on sale at BB for 19.99 to be really good so far, especially for wearing over prescription glasses. Much better than the regular 250 model. Have not tried the titanium 750 model yet though.

As for 3d movies, I've got about 75 so far including almost every domestic animated release. For kids, Kung Fu Panda 2 and Madagascar 3d are really amazing 3d. Other ones I recently watched and liked include both 3d wise and overall movie itself wise are Frankenweenie, Paranorman, and Dedpicable Me.

All the Disney animated are top notch (except Chicken Little) especially the Pixar 3d films.

Will be picking up Hotel Translyvania tomorrow at BB along with another pair of the 3d ps3 glasses now that I got s chance to test them out. Even though the glasses may seem a bit larger and clunkier than others, the lenses are huge so you don't have that problem of bring able to see the edge if the lenses while viewing, don't see the blinking light flash as others reported on the $100 titaniums, and the frames block out ambient light also.

I can't seem to improve this dizzying crosstalk on our sets ( as it seems to be ) to fully enjoy some 3D movies frown.gif

I am using the PS3 glasses also.

Are you watching a 3d bluray or 3d cable or satellite feed? What bluray player? There should be very minimal crosstalk with the HX950 when using the PS3 3d glasses and watching a 3d bluray.

Any specific scenes with crosstalk you can point out?
As an example... was watching "under the sea" ...pretty much the whole documentary not just s specific scene.
I have the default settings for 3D but should I verify or set another option ?

I've calibrated my 2D side with some custom settings.

P.S what's odd is that the 3D seemed Ok out of the box and since then it's strange

Something must be off because the only two scenes in the entire movie that may exhibit crosstalk on some display/glasses/bluray player combinations are the potato fish scene and the seals scene.

What bluray player?
Try viewing this picture in 3D you will see plenty of crosstalk. I haven't seen a TV yet that do not have crosstalk and that includes LGs passive TVs.

It only gets worse the more off axis you are viewing it.

I finally figured out why I haven't been satisfied with the blacklevel on my 950. smile.gif

I complained about it in post 2304:
http://www.avsforum.com/t/1430346/sony-xbr-hx950-owners-thread-xbr-55hx9-50-and-xbr-65hx95-0/2280#post_22817086

It looked like my LG set produced better blacklevel than the HX950 however it proved to be my Mediacenter which washed out the colors.

Strangely I have discovered that when I play recorded or live TV through the Windows 7 Mediacenter application black is more grayish and when I play the same clip using Windows Mediaplayer the black is indeed black. If you run Windows Mediacenter try it out with the clip I have linked to in post 2304.

I think this a very strange problem that the same videoclip can be played so differently on the same PC. I have no fixes for this other than looking for a new Mediacenter application. I have confirmed this problem on two HTPCs with different graphic cards, so I am convinced it is a SW issue.

Am I the only one with a 950 using Windows Mediacenter as my primary source for TV viewing? Do you guys use other mediacenter applications XBMC, Plex, Eye TV?

And the reason why it seemed liked my LG tv produced better black is that the Xbox mediacenter Extender feeding it can provide good black. confused.gif

Mind sharing yours?

Being in the mid 50's and being on these boards for 10yrs I have learned not to take anything personal. Glad to see that you and others don't either. Every now and than it's good to stir things up and debate. Give a different viewpoint and stand behind them as we do.There is no wrong or right in the end just opinions! smile.gif

I personally want to just get a decent set and move on with my life, ha!

You're going to hate my settings probably. My friends freak out because they're all film purists, but I absolutely love the so called SOE. The closer they can get to making the image and motion look like I'm looking out a window the better. I think because of the manipulation of time that it creates, it really exposes bad acting, lighting, storytelling. Because of this, it turns off a lot of people. Me, I can't wait for everything to be shot at 120 fps, ha! The best films and TV shows really hold up. A good story is a good story, but since good content is much more difficult to come by these days its always nice to marvel at a pretty picture to distract me from the fact I'm watching Twilight with my niece.

I pretty much just use Flavius's settings and jack up all the motion controls (Auto 1, Smooth, Manual DRC)[/quote]
**************************************************************************************************************************

Some settings you can try...

http://www.avsforum.com/t/1435724/sony-xbr-hx950-settings-thread

If you like the SOE stay with it; but you should really try some other settings as Flav's are so last year...

My 55HX950 just came in today. Just thought I'd share my experience.

I ordered it from Amazon Warehouse Deals for $2685 for a "like new" condition fulfilled by Amazon.com. On their website, they only listed it as "may be repackaged." The "very good" conditions were the ones that had small damages to the TV, such as "small cosmetic damage to the back or front housing." I saw a one that was posted as like new and pounced on it instantly. It was delivered by CEVA which is amazon's TV delivery of choice. They call you to schedule an appointment and then they deliver the TV. They set aside 4 hour blocks 8-12 and a 12-4 delivery window. I had to leave work for a half an hour to sign for the TV. This is amazon's white glove delivery service so the guy came and got to my apartment a few minutes before I arrived. I lived on the third floor but the guy had already grunted 55" TV up all three flights all by himself. I was pretty amazed.

Once in my apartment, he proceeded to take the TV out of the box. I'd like to mention that the "may come repackaged" was the only reason Amazon knocked off $500 dollars from the retail price. It came in a brown Amazon box that worked exactly the same way as the sony box. The amazon box was also in mint condition. It even had the clips at the bottom and the entire top portion of the box lifted off to reveal the TV packed in thick foam. All the little accessories were still shrink wrapped. The guy took all of the parts out and proceeded to set the stand up and mount the TV onto the stand. We powered up the TV (I was holding my breath for dead pixels) and I was did a fast look over for dead pixels. I didn't find any. Not believing that I got a perfect LCD, I did another search for dead pixels. None. I then connected my laptop up to the TV via HDMI and cycled through a few solid Blacks, Blues, Reds, and Whites. All perfect. No banding, clouding or DSE.

It was after all the tests did the delivery guy ask me to sign for the package. I signed and filled out a quick checklist/customer survey saying that he did all of the tasks he was supposed to do ie. unwrapping, mounting, etc. He even offered to take away the empty box but suggested that I keep the box around for another couple weeks just in case I needed to return the TV. I kept the box.

Seriously, if anyone's on the fence about purchasing a TV from Amazon, don't hesitate just because it is delivered rather than at a physical store. Had the TV been below my standards, the delivery guy would have just packed it all up and shipped it back to Amazon. The only thing you'd be losing out is the 2-3 day delivery time. Not to mention, by buying from Warehouse Deals, I saved a good $500 off retail price on a brand new TV still with all the shrink wrapping still on it. All the difference was, was just the Amazon box and packaging.

Now, off to find some good settings for this beast.

I took a couple pictures with my iPhone but because of the damn dust behind the lens, its pretty poor quality. Oh well.

I'm assuming you are seeing a 3d image, just one that displays higher than normal amounts of crosstalk....

A few other suggestions....

Make sure glasses are fully charged.

Make sure you are using an adequate HDMI cable that supports a 3d signal.

Does your player have two HDMI outs? If so, have one go directly to the tv. The other go directly to the receiver. If you are running the Sony bluray player through the AV receiver, then to the TV, the receiver could be the culprit if it is an older 3d enabled a/v receiver.... Similar to how older 3d tvs and older 3d model glasses produce more crosstalk than the new ones.

Are there other blurays that have exhibited high amounts of cross talk? Also, 3d over cable and satellite will have a lot of crosstalk as the signal is only 540i compared to 1080p full HD.

I'm using the 65hx950 and an Oppo 103 with the ps3 glasses and there is very very minimal crosstalk on 3d blurays.

It's not out of the question that the 3d processor in the panel is defective is defective or damaged. Was the tv transported upright or could it have been layed down on its front or back? In other forums, peopld have mentioned issues with severe crosstalk on panels that are not known for them, and a common denominator was that the panel was transported laying flat and not upright. The jarring or bumps could have damaged the 3d processor in the set.

Yes a big relief.

Just found this thread:
http://www.hack7mc.com/2009/06/fixing-media-centers-poor-black-levels.html

Anyone out there have a PC connected to their HX950? What dynamic range are you using?

If I change to 0-255 I get perfect black, but more or less everything else looks bad. Perhaps I just need to revise my settings totally.

Perhaps I need to deploy the registry hacks instead.

My bluray is connected to the tv directly for now. Glasses fully charged and I am using a knock-off hdmi high speed cable ( written on cable ) , you say it should support a 3d signal ?

Yes, but its not a special feature per say. Any high speed hdmi cable will support a 3d signsl which you are already using.

You said it looked ok out of the box? Try resetting picture settings to default.

well here's a guess, and i'm sure you probaby can figure it out to. it's called cost cutting measures, and yes it sucks for the consumer. solution screw the oem remote, and use some other universal one. ie; urc, logitech...

To reset TV to default factory settings.

1.Turn on the TV.
2.Wait approximately 40 seconds for the TV to completely start up.
3.On the TV remote control, press and hold the UP ARROW button.
4.While holding the UP ARROW button, press and release the POWER button on the TV set.

NOTES:
The power button is on the right side of the TV (first button on top). You will see RESET appear on your TV.

5.Release the UP ARROW button.

The TV turns off and back on. Wait a few seconds and you will see the see the initial set up screen.

This will reset to out of the box settings.

Or in my instance, I lucked out with no dead pixels, noticeable banding or noticeable DSE, but I do have some minor scratches on the gorilla glass. Does it annoy me, you bet.... But I'm not going to exchange over minor cosmetic issues knowing that performance wise I probably can't get better, but if there were dead pixels or noticeable banding that can be seen during normal viewing, then i would send it back in a heartbeat.

My point is there are noticeable defects on all tv's if that's what you are thinking about. I have yet to see one LCD tv that was 100% flawless. Too many things to list. Find a TV that's 80-90% good and focus energy on other things in life. The LCD medium for TV's has it ups, but it has many many minuses.

I use my HTPC as the only device connected to my HX950, but I generally try to avoid using WMC. What type of video card do you have? I assume you have an AMD/ATi video card if you are having this problem with WMC. If you go to the CCC panel, Video, Advanced Video Color, and set the dynamic range to "Full (0-255)", it should work. Don't ask me why, but AMD has their Full and Limited backwards. If you let it auto-choose by default, or if you choose "Limited (16-235)", then WMC brightens everything and really grays out the blacks. It seems like WMC is the only app that is affected by this; WMP, TMT, and PDVD seem to correctly choose the real limited when playing media.

I am running on a Mac Mini (mid 2010) with integrated Nvidia GeForce 320M videocard.

I tried changing away from (16-235) to a dynamic range of 0-255. That gave me really solid blacks but everything else looked bad (white was blinding). Perhaps because I use CRITICALSHOTS agressive settings at the moment to compensate for the lack of black in WMC.

Dynamic 0-255 also ruined the playback using Windows Mediaplayer.

But very strange that WMC has this strange behaviour.

I think it was an Nvidia update that caused this issue. I was experiencing the same problem with WMC, but was able to correct the problem by changing the digital color format from RGB to YCbCr444.
