TRILUMINOS LED was Sony's lighting used in the XBR8's there were red, 2green, and blue LED lights full array, but now as edgelit source, not sure how effective that will be.

Thanks IMRIZZO for the PM.

As for 3d movies, I've got about 75 so far including almost every domestic animated release. For kids, Kung Fu Panda 2 and Madagascar 3d are really amazing 3d. Other ones I recently watched and liked include both 3d wise and overall movie itself wise are Frankenweenie, Paranorman, and Dedpicable Me.

All the Disney animated are top notch (except Chicken Little) especially the Pixar 3d films.

Will be picking up Hotel Translyvania tomorrow at BB along with another pair of the 3d ps3 glasses now that I got s chance to test them out. Even though the glasses may seem a bit larger and clunkier than others, the lenses are huge so you don't have that problem of bring able to see the edge if the lenses while viewing, don't see the blinking light flash as others reported on the $100 titaniums, and the frames block out ambient light also.

Thanks cmay91472 and Imrizzo for the feedback!

I was able to pick up 3 PS3 3d glasses at BB after work. Had to order 1 extra from Amazon (prime member) as I had purchased BB remaining on hand stock.

As far as movies I picked up Kung Fu Panda 2 , Dedpicable Me, Avatar and Imrizzo recommendation of UP on 3D.

cmay91472, I didn't realize 3d movies were over 30.00 a pop!! I can only imagine what your investment is like for 75 3d movies. These are not cheap!!! Are there cheaper places to buy 3d movies???

Also, while I was at BB I picked up a Sony BDPS790 3D Blu-ray Player

They did not have Samsara at BB so I ordered that from Amazon last night as well.

i am trying to work my way through this voluminous thread but has anyone spent a relatively long period of time with an Elite (ie longer than a few minutes in the store) and ended up choosing the 950 to live with?

how do the banding, dse, and/or lack of uniformity compare with the sony and the elite? i have an Elite that is going to be exchanged because of these issues and wondering if the sony is better in this regard.

thx!

I ordered it from Amazon Warehouse Deals for $2685 for a "like new" condition fulfilled by Amazon.com. On their website, they only listed it as "may be repackaged." The "very good" conditions were the ones that had small damages to the TV, such as "small cosmetic damage to the back or front housing." I saw a one that was posted as like new and pounced on it instantly. It was delivered by CEVA which is amazon's TV delivery of choice. They call you to schedule an appointment and then they deliver the TV. They set aside 4 hour blocks 8-12 and a 12-4 delivery window. I had to leave work for a half an hour to sign for the TV. This is amazon's white glove delivery service so the guy came and got to my apartment a few minutes before I arrived. I lived on the third floor but the guy had already grunted 55" TV up all three flights all by himself. I was pretty amazed.

Once in my apartment, he proceeded to take the TV out of the box. I'd like to mention that the "may come repackaged" was the only reason Amazon knocked off $500 dollars from the retail price. It came in a brown Amazon box that worked exactly the same way as the sony box. The amazon box was also in mint condition. It even had the clips at the bottom and the entire top portion of the box lifted off to reveal the TV packed in thick foam. All the little accessories were still shrink wrapped. The guy took all of the parts out and proceeded to set the stand up and mount the TV onto the stand. We powered up the TV (I was holding my breath for dead pixels) and I was did a fast look over for dead pixels. I didn't find any. Not believing that I got a perfect LCD, I did another search for dead pixels. None. I then connected my laptop up to the TV via HDMI and cycled through a few solid Blacks, Blues, Reds, and Whites. All perfect. No banding, clouding or DSE.

It was after all the tests did the delivery guy ask me to sign for the package. I signed and filled out a quick checklist/customer survey saying that he did all of the tasks he was supposed to do ie. unwrapping, mounting, etc. He even offered to take away the empty box but suggested that I keep the box around for another couple weeks just in case I needed to return the TV. I kept the box.

Seriously, if anyone's on the fence about purchasing a TV from Amazon, don't hesitate just because it is delivered rather than at a physical store. Had the TV been below my standards, the delivery guy would have just packed it all up and shipped it back to Amazon. The only thing you'd be losing out is the 2-3 day delivery time. Not to mention, by buying from Warehouse Deals, I saved a good $500 off retail price on a brand new TV still with all the shrink wrapping still on it. All the difference was, was just the Amazon box and packaging.

Now, off to find some good settings for this beast.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I have been on the fence for quite a while about purchasing from Amazon Warehouse's offerings (they now have 55HX929's for about $1600, although I'm currently thinking of waiting for the new W900). It would be very interesting to know whether your purchase is covered by Sony's 1-year manutacturer's warranty, and I suspect that the answer may vary on a case-by-case basis depending on the set's prior purchase history. If you could call Sony to confirm the warranty status I would love to hear what you find out.

AppleMark

I took a couple pictures with my iPhone but because of the damn dust behind the lens, its pretty poor quality. Oh well.

Looks like some faint purple banding on the left and right of center with the left being more pronounced.

I saw the same thing when looking at his picture, although what stood out to me was rhe very wide vertical band in the center.

You can't really tell from this picture

P.S I was just at a friend's house and he has a sharp 60" aquos and it has some banding issues also when panning within a hockey game.

I'm convinced all large screen TV's have this problem

I have just bought myself an HX955 (european model). Should be similar to HX950, I hope :-)

Im happy so far but have discovered something that gets my mind worried.

I have like 1/3" light bleeding from top of screen. I can see it when there is darker scenes witch solid backround on tv, even when I sit infront at sweetspot. The bright line is even more visible if I go to a black screen, turn off local dimming and stand upp looking down at the tv from above.

Anyone else have this issue?

Maby I can take some photos.

I would hazard a guess that my set should be covered by Sony. Rather than being returned, I think my set just had a box that was very banged up so they couldn't sell it, since everything was still under shrink wrapping. If the warehouse deal item says its eligible for the SquareTrade warranty, I would guess those were the items that were sent back to sony or refurbished. Those items might not have the warranty. Again, just a guess.

Again, that picture was taken by my iPhone which has dust inside the lens. There isn't any banding. That's just window in the background playing tricks on the camera. There IS however an ever slight amount of light loss in the corners on a pure white screen. It's almost as if its got the inverse of light bleed in the corners, only its darkness. The picture makes it look much worse than what it looks like. I'm still wondering if its my mind and eyes playing games with me but seeing how camera captured how my mind is interpreting it, it's probably real. At least to some small extent. In no way is it bothersome but

Just out of curiosity, has there been any documented cases of light LOSS along the edges or corners? Even asking the question seems pretty absurd as in almost all other cases and TV's its light bleeding in the corners...

Dynamic 0-255 also ruined the playback using Windows Mediaplayer.

But very strange that WMC has this strange behaviour.
Bummer. Ugh, nvidia. I stopped using their crap years ago when they had several driver releases in a row with serious bugs. I think the one that pushed me over the edge was after I switched to 24Hz, then I could either switch back to 60Hz or have 24 bit color, but not both. I have nothing good to say about nvidia except good riddance. They're focusing exclusively on gaming stuff, and don't give the slightest care to media playback or the HTPC crowd.

Good luck getting your video settings working. I've had better success using either Intel integrated graphics or AMD graphics cards.

I have the same on my tv. Looks a bit like there is more space between pixels at corners, or could it be lack of light?

Whohoo I was able to get black i WMC. The fix was the registrykey linked on this page:
http://www.hack7mc.com/2009/06/fixing-media-centers-poor-black-levels.html

YCbCr444 seems to be a setting only available when using DVI -> HDMI as far as I can google wink.gif

When running HDMI directly out of the PC then this option is not there. And it seems that HDMI expects a dynamic range of 16-235 (not 0-255, this is for monitors). So the dynamic range should be kept at 16-235 and then the reg. hack should be deployed or else WMC decrease the dynamic range even more. It is like it thinks that when starting WMC I must create and output which fits a TV and therefore it decreases the dynamic range further however if it already is at 16-235 then the end result will be something like 32-215 and then black turns gray.

And this unwanted feature can be removed with the registry hack (16-235.reg).

Am I the only one seing problems with "end credits" which are scrolling horizontal? (right to left)

The only way I can remove the juddered text scroll is by setting the Motionflow on Smooth, all other settings creates judder.

When I look at the different settings people have posted I see Off, Standard, Clear and Clear Plus. No one is using Smooth.

Normally I would like to turn all this extra processing off to avoid Soap Opera effect and fictive frames being added but I cannot get a good scrolling text without it.

Does anyone know what the different modes does?

A wild guess could be:

Clear: Black Frame insertion
Clear Plus: Black Frame insertion + Scanning backlights
Standard: Frame interpolation + Black Frame insertion + Scanning backlights
Smooth: 2 x Frame interpolation + Black Frame insertion + Scanning backlights

I think clear and clear plus are the other way round ie scanning backlight for clear, and black frame insertion and scanning backlight for clear plus.

All smooth and standard do is frame interpolation, they do nothing for motion blur.

Thing is people attempt to get rid of the judder in films here is a quote from another thread.

"Panning motion is supposed to look like a judder, like a machine gun."

Judder personally doesn't bother me.

I know you were talking purely about credits, but just felt it worth mentioning while we were talking about motion flow.

I am so mad I can't find the link I had for the explanations of the motion settings mad.gif ! You should not concern yourself with the "juddered text scroll". When you use smooth and auto 1 you will introduce nasty artifacts; which I would stay away from. If you are watching blu-ray there is a strong possibility it will be played in 24 frames for second. I would suggest cutting that setting off and watching it in 30fps. If you want to use the smooth setting with very minimal artifacts you would need to use the auto 2 setting.

If you go to the best cinema with the best equipment, you would still see judder. If I was you I would sit back and enjoy the display and stop looking for issues but I will be always willing to help if I can. Do you have a dedicated blu-ray player?

You are right about the Smooth setting it fixed the scrolling text but created artifact in all scenes with fast motion. I am back to Clear and Clear Plus.

I will try and sit back and enjoy the display... however I do not feel that I have reached the optimum settings yet... I have to start all over now that I fixed the black issue in WMC. But it is like getting a whole new display in a very positive way.

Hey for whatever reason, whenever I connect my TV via HDMI to my computer, the TV goes into "graphics" mode and that option is grayed out. I can't make it go back into standard mode. Has anyone experienced this and know how to make the TV go back into a regular non picture viewing mode? When its in graphics, motion and other options are disabled.

No problem here with my HTPC->receiver->950, though I think it went into Graphics mode by default when I first connected to it. Go to Settings -> Preferences -> Scene Select and you should be able to select "General" or something else other than "Graphics".

Hey all. After reading a bunch I think I'm still leaning towards the HX850. Too bad I can't find it anywhere... Does anyone know how they compare when it comes to screen reflections/glare? The 950 was a little too reflective for my taste but maybe I could get used to it? Then again it seems to be the next distinguisher after we get that pesky issue of PQ out of the way. smile.gif

Hx950 and hx850 use the same Corning gorilla glass so the reflection will be identical.

No. Zero dead pixels. No noticeable vertical banding except on greyscale test slides, no noticeable DSE. Oct. 2012 build.

Only thing I wish was better was how comcast hd cable looked. The tv definitely brings out many of the flaws of the source material from comcast that I don't see on my older 55 inch wega LCD.

Bluray and 3d look spectacular.

I just ordered one from Amazon! While I was checking out it occurred to me that this is the biggest purchase I've made that I can’t live in or doesn’t have wheels, but I clicked the button anyway. My thanks to everyone in this thread. I’m pretty sure I read every post.

I would say not much better except that the HX950 is full array LED where the HX850 aint. Other then that they are almost the same.

LOL. That's a pretty significant difference which eliminates flashlighting and uniformity issues associated with edge lit panels. 950 is significantly better than the 850... But almost identical to the previous 929 series.

Since the hx950 replacement won't be announced most likely until the fall combined with Sony's success at getting retailers to abide by their pricing guidelines.... Probably wont see any significant discount any time soon.

Are you not happy with your ES?
