I was told it was a brand new TV being used as a display model. Would there be anything different about it, from a new one because of it's being a Shelf Display. Any ideas. I know this tv was off the floor, but told it was new. When I got there to pick it up, there was no box. When I got it home I noticed I also have the wrong remote. Thoughts.

Was the sticker on the back of the tv from BB or Sony? It's probably just like the BB Sales Guy told you, "it's new but on display." These tvs have only been available since October '12. As far as I know they don't make tvs specifically for display so I'm sure the tv is fine. How did you get that TV anyway? I didn't think they sold display models unless they're being phased-out completely. I wouldn't worry too much as long as the tv works for you ok. The remote that comes with the 950 is dated.
Hope that helps.

Over here manufacturers cherry pick the best tv's that will be displayed in stores. In that case you should have an excellent quality panel.

May not be the case, but you never know.

Hi Justin,
I don't know about the sticker being from BB. It has nothing about BB on it. I will try to post a pic as soon as I figure out how.

I had been interested in the 950 since it came out. I had been to BB and talked with the Mag. manager a few times about it, while I had my Sammy PNe8000 and then the Sony 60in 645. I wasn't satisfied with the 645's picture, or the Sammy's, or a Panny 65GT50. I only had a couple of days to return the 645 so went to see what the manager new about the 2013 Sammy and Panny plazmas. He really didn't know. After I told him about how great they both were supposed to be this year, he just chuckled and said that every year it's the same story, the best picture ever. He also said that they may indeed have improved pictures, but buy no means did he think they would be, all I was referring to, from the internet talk. So I asked if I bought the Sony (having two days left to return my tv), would he match the promotion on the Sony site and throw in 2 free pairs of glasses. He went on the pc to see if he could get me a new one, scince they only had the demo in the store. He then told me that the 950's were discontinued, and that they didn't even have any in their Chicago warehouse. I live in Oshkosh, the store is in Appleton. He asked me if I wanted the floor model for a discount. I said how much, he said 4599, and I said, throw in the 2 pairs of free glasses and you got a deal. That's how I got it.

I will post more later. It took me a half an hour at least to clean all the smudges and finger prints off the screen. I reset all the settings and am running through some blu rays that have great pictures to see how they look. I am watching them on Cinema 2 factory settings for now, and so far I am very pleased with the picture. When I first turned it on, without it being connected to anything (my mistake), with the light blue screen on I did see one dark band in the middle of the screen and one smaller band on either side of the full screen one. That being said, so far I haven't noticed it with what I've watched so far, and I haven't displayed anything with a bright screen that pans yet. So when I do, I will let you know how bad it is, or isn't. With me thinking that Cinema 2 factory settings is a beautiful picture, I might really be happy when it get calibrated and have it tuned in. I'm going back to watch some more, can't help myself. More later.

$4600 seems awfully high for a floor model. $4579 is the current online low price that most (ymmv) BBs will price match for a new one. The 3D glasses if they are not the PS3 and are the Sony 250s or 750s will need the polarizing filters from Sony or the 3D will not look that great. Two pairs of 3D glasses for the HX950 should only cost $40.00 for both (PS3 that already have the polarizing filters).

Hopefully the tv is to your liking. The vertical band down the middle is fairly common on the 65HX950. As long as it can't be seen during regular viewing... It should be fine, but the degree of the vertical band varies from set to set and others have had to return sets that have the band noticeable during regular viewing.

Hate to say it, but combined with the fact that the manager said the HX950 is discontinued and he quoted you the current online match price when selling you a floor model, sounds like this particular manager was less than truthful with you.

For me, two factors....

When a 65 or larger costs under $7500 for a Sony or other major manufacturer.

If there is a noticeable improvement on up scaling with an Oppo to 4k. If not, then like you said, the lack of 4k content may make me wait some.

Take anything BB say's with a grain of salt and a lotta caution. They do not retain boxes from floor mdls, but they usually have all the package contents in a separate bag (remote/and any accessories / with literature and warranty info). They should also have info regarding when unit was setup on display and they never have remotes readily available so customers can 'play' with them. Insist on correct remote (Remote Control Model # RM-YD073 ).

Hi cmay, I price-matched online before I went, and the lowest price for the 950 from a certified distributor was still the 2199 price. Regardless of deal, I will not spend this much without some kind of warranty, and I don't think sony will warranty from a non-certified distributor. If indeed it is a sony certified distributor, then yes, I should have gotten a better deal. I'm also not sure if this particular manager would have gone below the 4579 price due to price-matching and being a floor model? Definitely would have been nice though. Oh well, got up today and I still like it, a lot. Since I have to drive back to the store to pick up the right remote, I will see if he will throw in a pair of ps3 glasses. More to follow.

Where did you find this price?

I was under the impression that no authorized Sony seller could undercut the Sony Store price, which is still $5199.99 for the 65 XBR 950.

Hi Rizzo, I had left my number with bb to contact me when a 65" came in (I wanted to see it in person before I just flat out ordered it, like they wanted me to), so it had been there right around 2 months. Your rendition matches what they said about the box also. Thankfully I did get a bag taped to the tv with the paper documentation and manual. The remote was taped on the top of the tv. I did call the manager when I got home, and asked if I ccould get a remote that came with the tv, he left me wait for a bit, then another sales person picked up and told me to pick it up. I'll see what model no: it is when I pick it up, will let you know.

BB (YMMV) often price match even non authorized Sony dealers online as long as they are not a third party seller such as ones on Amazon. Again YMMV, but if you call a few BBs, odds are one of the managers will agree to price match since BBs new price match policy instituted Nov of 2012 allows for any online price match from non 3rd party companies.

So e- tailors such as alltimetvs and nycpowerseller are fair game.

I have 4 BBs all within 15 to 30 minutes from me, so getting a price match on tvs has never been a problem. If they are the only BB in your area, it may be harder. I was able to price match the above mentioned sellers on both a 65VT50 and 65ES8000, prior to getting the 65HX950.

That's why I price match at BB frequently, because I get the lowest online price and it still comes from an authorized dealer.

Bottom line is if you are happy with the tv. You still got a good price, but the manager was not being honest with you. Open box or floor model price should have been closer to $4,000 since BB YMMV will sell this tv new for just under $4600. Trust me, he is well aware of the current online price which is why he threw out the $4600 number to you for the floor model, most likely expecting you to try to barter down. Anything goes in terms of negotiating on open box or floor models, hence your ability to get him to throw in the glasses.

If they can't find the original remote, try to get them to add in a $50 gift card to cover the cost of a universal remote.

I'm heading to BB shortly. PM me with a low authorized dealer Price match which BB will match for 55" 950. Thanks

has anyone got the free best buy calibration when spend over 2500(rewards members)..i read that the best buy calibration is not that great somewhere but just wondering if anyone did and saw a improvement in p/q...

From the different threads from different TV manufactures they say pretty much all the same. Right down your #s b4 BB calibrates your tv just in case they mess it up too bad. Who knows you may get lucky give it a shot.

Hi, i'm in the same boat, the two stores around here that i've been too, both hail their area calibrator as some kind of god. I will probably at some point have him calibrate the tv, and will also write down the numbers if possible. Exactly what numbers are you refering too. The service menu ones or what? Does anyone think they could make it worse or do some damage? Since I got their warranty, if it didn't look right, could I get them to fix it or whatever, or not?

Hi, that's great info for next time I shop tv's. Hopefully with the money I spent this time around, it won't have to be anytime soon.

Here is the good thing. Unlike other tvs, there is no special calibration menu that these calibraters need to access on the hx950.... Therefore, even if they do a half-@$$ job, you can easily just press the reset setting found on each scene select mode. What they will be doing is adjusting the same options that you already have access to, but with software to help them get the color and greyscale as accurate as possible.

Thanks for the info. That is good news, even I can't mess that up.

It figures. I ordered a 55" 950 from Amazon last week and the price dropped $200 before it even got to me. Oh well, I filed a claim so they should give me my $200 back. I wonder if this means the 950 is discontinued and they are selling off what’s left?

Hi Dave, when I bought mine last Tue. at bb the magnolia manager told me they were discontinued, fwiw.

I did notice Robert Zohn who does the HDTV shoot out posted that the HX950 has been discontinued over at the bluray.com forums. It's not official as it is still listed on Sony's website whereas the HX850 is now listed as discontinued.

My guess is that Sony is merely halting further production as their strategy all along with the HX950 from reading a few articles on the pricing structure for the 950s was to produce a limited number of 950s and sell them at a higher cost instead of producing higher numbers but selling at a lower cost which was causing the tv division to lose money.

The HX950 debuted in October/November so calling it quits after just 3 months to make way for a replacement would seem ludicrous.

Either way, it also appears that the HX950 may indeed be the last full array with local dimming from Sony. Other notes... It appears the 2013 Sony lineup will all have matte screens as well as passive 3D incorporated.

Good or bad? I guess we won't know until August to see what the replacement for the HX950 will be and if it does incorporate the above mentioned changes. Three of the selling points for me with the 65HX950 were full array, active 3d and the gorilla glass. All three could be gone on the replacement.

I don't see a solid source to backup the matte on all screens... I will be sad if there are no more full arrays... Especially if the 950 is really discontinued... Why so early?!

Yes. Replaces the hx850. No announcement to a 950 successor. Some believe there won't be. If so then full array is dead... I'm guessing it will be a sad day like the death of the kuro.

Yes. The W900 is edge lit and the HX850 replacement. It will be available in only 55 inch if the info on the link is correct. I find it odd in regards to how each model for 2013 is limited to only 1 or 2 screen sizes per model with the exception of the R550.
