Hi Davids777, I wish you good luck if you decide to make an exchange. I have been following various forums to get information on the HX950 since before it was released and I knew your story from reading other of your posts on some french forums. I know exactly how you feel, I made several exchanges of the former model, the 929 in 65 inches because of banding issues before giving up and demanding a refund.

Recently I bought a 55 929 for a good price for a relative (thank you Rizz for sending me your settings!) and it has some banding and dse too, visible mostly in fast pannings and videogames like journey, but she doesn't notice it and is happy with the tv.
The uniformity in these sets is not the best and quality control in that respect leaves a lot to be desired. I planned to get later a 55 hx950 for myself expecting the newer panels would improve the uniformity over the previous model and get a panel with no banding/dse noticeable on normal viewing but now I am not sure which are the possibilities of that. I have practically discarded my first option the 65 model as the 65 panels used by sony and samsung seem to be always affected by banding. I wish the panel uniformity on these would improve, I really don't feel like exchanging again several tvs only to try to get a good one...

Again Davids777, good luck with what you decide and remember to keep us informed!

Hi BurntIce, technology is international smile.gif I write about this TV on many French forums and i post some videos on Youtube... But in France, rare people had this set and here, many people had this set and much time before europeans... It's easier to know if a problem is normal or not here.

I think you are right ! The better think to do is accept this set had some banding/dse or give up and change for an other brand because it's to hard to win the perfect Sony set lottery... And this TV is amazing for the rest ! Yet, i'm not happy with Sony because they selected TVs for reviews without banding and all says no banding but for the consumers, it's different ! This is the reason why i thought it's possible to get one...

Sony not honest with this banding problem and when i report my problem for us, they tried to repear (yes, repear, no change after 10 days here in France) my set but Sony technicians come with wrong replacement part and after disassemble all my set, they give up and go back... Bottom of this post, i put a photo of my set frown.gif Sony do good job with this TV but not serious with consumers... I give up and follow BurntIce good advice to not lose more time but i stay angry with this brand for the bad customer service...

I got my 55" 950 yesterday. I'm coming from a 7th generation Pioneer, so the difference is jaw dropping. I put in the Game of Thrones Blu-ray last night and I was shocked by the image quality. I told myself I wasn’t going to look for problems with this set, but panning shots with white skies were there, so I had to take a look. There were no banding or visible DSE problems to report. I’ll be able to watch hockey again.

I did see a bit of clouding on a totally black scene when I was watching 3-D. I then realized the local dimming was turned off in 3-D mode. Since I turned it on it’s been awesome. I couldn’t believe how great the 3-D is on this set. I’ve never been a big fan of it at the cinema because I didn’t think the 3-D effect was worth dimming the image. No problem here.

Yes, you said it, this tv is amazing for the rest. It's a shame what happened with the technicians and your new tv and you have good reason to be angry, I believe whatever you choose you should complain to sony about this, if you don't lose your temper and explain how you feel and the problem you had with the panel swap that maybe could press them to get you a new tv, and if they don't at least they will know you are not satisfied and will try to get to an agreement with you, you are their customer after all... I know you just want to get over with it and stop losing time and energies on this, I've been there too... but since the technicians already opened your tv maybe is worth a try.

That's good to hear, and it's good advice not to look for or obsess over problems (easier said than done sometimes...) if one has them they will just show in regular viewing anyway. Congratulations, enjoy your 950!

There is no such this as a perfect set in any model, any make. This is good advice. Almost every TV out there has DSE to some degree.

Picked up my 950 and I knew the box would barely fit in my Lexus RX350 with one rear seat down and on a slight slant I only had a couple inches for the window on the back hatch. The box is humongous. Been watching only DISH and so far everything looks good. I don't see any banding or DSE. I'll watch SKYFALL either tonight or tomorrow on Bluray. I had to pull my towers out of the way so I have to measure and put them all back properly. I measure where the towers were so I don't have to run Audyssey each time but knowing me I probably will run again when no one is in the house. Very happy with the purchase so far. I'm going to go and tweak some settings now to really dial in the picture.

Please be more specific or post a pic and I'm sure some one in here can help identify the issue, but brown vertical stripe is kinda vague.

It is certainly a previously unreported anomaly ?

I just wanted to chime in today. After using IMRIZZOs' setting recommendation this set is as close to perfect as one could get. Watching DISH network is phenomenal so I cannot wait to put in a BLU-RAY where this Sony will shine. Maybe I should throw one in just to see while I'm home today. Haven't even put in a BLU so far regular programming has been great. If someone is on the fence I recommend getting a 950 before they are sold out.

Throw in the new Bond movie and be prepared for a treat especially if you have a nice surround system ....this movie is definitely reference material.

the 2d to 3d is engaged only way to see the brown stripe is in 3d and it will show up in a 3d movie and game not using the conversion mode to

IMO you should return this set, that's not an normal anomaly.

I didn't realize what you were seeing until I understood the "brown stripe". geez, haven't seen or heard of that either. Just checked my 929, to see if it would do that as well without a signal and here is what I have found. The first one is 2D and the second one is 3D. Not sure this is the same as what you are seeing, but I don't see this during actual programming.

FWIW, these are 2D and 3D screen shots of my display. If this is similar, I sure don't see it during any normal programming. I have definitely looked at it fairly critically, and it is calibrated really accurately at 2.2 gamma. Though not sure this is all that relevant without a signal. It more speaks I supposed to screen uniformity...

I would switch sets..

Sort of off topic.... but here is an article and internal document of Best Buys new and permanent price matching policy. Of interesting note for TV buyers, is that returns exchanges for non silver reward zone members has been decreased from 30 days to just 15. 60 days remains in tact for SRZ members. Also in the article is the list of approved online websites that they will match.

Looks like best buy will definitely lose my business for a tv purchase. 15 days? Really?? What a joke. Amazon, sears and sams club/wal mart will be my only goto
post #2728 of 3827
@Danediz when you purchase your Sony you will be a Silver member. BB not only PM'd but did $15 dollars better than Amazon on my purchase. No tax.

I defiinitely agree @hatedgreatness.... It looks off. I almost did on mine, but it is really not visible at even 1080i OTA, especially in moving or busy content... I still might try to swing a 950 refurb for fun. Not sure this would warrant it, but I agree it is rather un-uniform. I really didn't scrutinize it for uniformity while I was calibrating it. I always do on other people's -weird.

Sorry for the massive image, I was curious as to what it would look like online....lol. Actually, it really doens't show online as much as I see it IRL. Hmmm, I guess hatedgreatness' images must really be imposing. It's a real "gotta see be there to appreciate it" sort of thing...

Hope the general comparison helps your case...
