Sony XBR-HX950 Owners' Thread (XBR-55HX950 and XBR-65HX950) - Page 93

I was able to get my 55HX929 replaced with a 55HX950. I've only had it for a few days but I'm very impressed so far. My screen has much better uniformity across a static image than my HX929 did. The local dimming also seems superior in both General and Game modes. Hopefully this set will serve me well for a long time.

I still set-up systems for people (mostly friends and family) Displays/Audio/Video wiring etc.all the bending and lifting beats the crap outta me.

Did you have a Sony warranty or BB warranty or something equivalent? What happened to the 929? I was trying to find the 929 in 55" but couldn't locate any so ended up purchasing the 950 a week ago today. So far really enjoy the quality of this set. Just watched some preloaded 3D on the 950 and it looked great.

I've done a few of those...they call me the techno geek in my neighborhood. I don't volunteer my services like I have done in the past though

I guess I'm not as geeky as I thought. I play Netflix App through the Sony and can't get audio through my sound system. I have speakers set to Audio system, Audio Out set on headphone/Audio out, audio Out setting to fixed and HDMI Audio. What am I missing...something simple. Maybe a shot of Woodford Reserve Double Oaked will straighten me out smile.gif Thanks

Not sure this helps, but here is a part from the iManual of the 929, expect you have this setup already, if so great.

When connecting a digital audio system that is compatible with “Control for HDMI” (“BRAVIA” Sync) and Audio Return Channel (ARC) technology, connect to HDMI IN 1 with an HDMI cable. If connecting a system that is incompatible with “Control for HDMI” or Audio Return Channel, an additional audio connection via DIGITAL AUDIO OUT (OPTICAL) is necessary.

Also, I was fighting my Roku last night and there are separate audio settings under each movie in Netflix if they have more than one audio avialable, regardless of how the settings are under the Roku menu. I could not get any sound with it on 5.1 (my default in both the Roku settings and Netflix). It had been doing great during the week, but all of a sudden, it wouldn't automatially downgrade to stereo or play unless I manually changed it to stereo for the movie (it seems to keep the default and apply it for all future movies). Basically, if I put it on stereo, I have sound. If I put it on 5.1, no sound. Movie was HD either way direct connect 50/5. I think netflix may be having an issue, though the same thing was happening on Vudu. Except, in Vudu, one has to use the Roku to get the sound (like Amazon Prime does). Now, here's the kicker. Even after a reset of the box (note: Apple Tv did not have any issues on the same movie at the same time I was doing this, I kept checking it), it is still behaving odd. Also, Amazon, HBOGo was working properly on the Roku before and after the reset... Someting is going on....

Hence, I wonder if it is Netflix's server or something.

Thanks tbaudoin maybe I need a optical out. I have a Xbox SLIM also hooked up so will use that for Netflix. Just thought it would be convenient to use a current input instead of switching on my 1100 remote. Also if I use anything that is preloaded on my 950 I get no sound on my HT Speakers. I have to Mute on my 1100 remote so its not catching the DISH channel Audio and listen through 950 speakers. Programs like the preloaded 3D etc...

You would have to run digital optical out to your AVR. The bummer is using optical out you do not get HD audio like you would when running a signal via HDMI. So, either use your Xbox, AVR or DVD player for streaming media. This way you'll get the best sound via HDMI. This is one reason why some DVD players have 2 HDMI outputs, one video and the other audio. This allows for HD audio to your AVR and then the video to the TV. And also a solution for AVr's that don't allow 3D passthrough.

Thanks boxsterdude. All the Apps in the 950 the Audio will not pass to my HT System. I can Mute volume on HT system and use the 950s speakers but...just missing a simple setup somewhere in the menu..that's my guess.

Under settings, channels & inputs, HDMI, and then there are a few things there to try on your 950.If I remember right there is a feature to enable components and a few other things I had to turn on in that menu. And I'm sure you are utilizing HDMI 1 on your 950? I think that's the only HDMI input with ARC on the 950.

Good luck

Yeah using HDMI 1. I'm watching the MSU/Ohio St. Game and if I go into apps. To watch Netflix I will get the sound of the game and not the Netflix movie. I have to mute the HT system and use the 950s speakers.

Try selecting "TV" on your remote on your Denon receiver. As you know you've reversed the signal of Audio and should be I would think, on your TV input on your AVR. So yeah, push TV on remote and see what you get.
I just toggled through all the inputs on Denon remote nothing...not switching for some reason.
Maybe have to add optical to the source select settings on the Denon to whatever source you see the Netflix without sound. But menu on the denon remote has to work. That way if the audio is switched to the tv, which is not an input, but the sound is, then it should hopefully change over to optical when needed? Hmm also, assuming the batteries are fresh, might check to make sure a zone isn't selected that disables a set of functions.

Rizz, do you stream anything from the Sony back to your Denon?
I contacted Sony support. Sounds like I need a optical out on the 950. I figured with a ARC capable reciever Denon A100 I could just use the HDMI. Still doesn't seem right.
Everything is working as should. I've had my HT shut down for a couple mos. in living room, while I was deciding on which flatpanel to purchase. I checked DenonA100 reciever settings again and didn't notice a input was changed in Menu ( Don't know why it changed?) and NETFLIX is working as should with just a HDMI (ARC). Glad I didn't give up. Thanks everyone for the help and suggestions.

It stinks to have an issue, but if an issue was to occur this would be the prime time. Update to the next/new model for free wink.gif

How many 950 owners have extra warranty coverage? Since everything is operating properly on my set (operator problems) not set problems I'm a happy camper. I was just curious since I have some time left to add coverage if I want. I did on my last plasma purchase through Best Buy and ended up using the warranty...saved me $700. One and only time I ever purchased warranty on large ticket items. That set ended up lasting 10 yrs.

I have never bought an E/W on any of my equipment, usually when buying hi-end equipment you'll usually find any problems within the first 90 days. And then most equipment has 12-18 mos, once you've reached that point any problems are usually from mis-use.

My experience over the past 25 years with Sony has been similar. No problems until far beyond the warranty, if it makes it past the initial period. Though, I have experienced two displays where the internal memory was no longer holding changes to settings as it did when it was new. I am thinking of a 20" CRT I still have that is 1991. It works perfectly, but the settings are engraved in stone -I wouldn't mind opening it up to replace a battery (yea, batteries did exist that far back!) I just haven't thought about it for so long, I will probably let it go soon. It was my first "big" sony purchase. $600 in 1991. lol by today's standards.

I passed on the warranty. I bought mine at BB and I think the extended warranty was 500+ for five years. Think if I put a warranty on everything I bought I could probably buy another 950 at the end of the year.
If my TV was having issues that others have been experiencing on this forum then I might seriously think about it.

For Costco members from time to time you can add their square trade warranty to some tv's for $99. ( this applies to tv's not bought at Costco. ) I read it somewhere in here........ Sorry, for that price I am all in. No I have no idea where I read it, it is hidden in the millions of posts biggrin.gif

Does anyone have ripples in the top of their displays. Mine has them all along the top frame, with one in the middle, that looks from the side, to be a couple inches into the screen itself. However I don't notice it in regular viewing. Just curious how common an anomaly it is.

I ended up getting a harmony 650 at bb for 59 and some cents. If it works out I can always upgrade. I'm currently only using it with tv, blu-ray, and receiver. Haven't integrated the ps3 yet.

No ripples. Very happy with my 950. I'm using a Harmony 1100 remote upgraded from the Harmony Touch.

My 55" 950 has a few but very slight ripples at the top. I noticed them day one when I was 90 degrees to the screen and a 8 foot window to the side of the TV. Lots of glare at that angle. From my viewing angle I notice nothing. I'm going to guess most TV's have the ripples from design. However, most people are never going to notice unless they stand perpendicular to the screen and then have lots of back light for the ripples to stand out. I would never consider taking my TV back because of a few ripples. The picture is just to awesome to take a chance and have other problems to worry about.
