How do you put it in standby - is there option in the menu or something?

There is a power button on the right side of the TV ( should be the top switch) when this is on the light on the front of the panel will show RED. this keeps a slight power supply to the inner circuits which allows it to keep it's memory thus allowing for quick turn-on because the TV does not have to re-load info necessary to be operational.
Hope this helps get you off to a speedier startup usually 10-15 seconds or less.

well first off nobodys credit card info was lost it was encrypted and sony did they right thing and shut the network down and completely upgraded there network is way more sechre now and just to let u know xbox live gets hacked all the time and people loose money from the hack allot and just to let you know any online network will get hacked nothing is secure completely.and I love sonys exclusive and sony is the only one thats truly supporting hardcore gamers unlike xbox but im not defeneding the playstation being a fanboy both units have there pros and cons but the ps4 as far as I can tell they learned from there mistakes and I think next gen sony is going to own but I dont know what xbox is going to do but its not going to be as a powerful unit as the ps4 and its going to be more difficult to deveolope for and microsoft will go more casual gamers. I also find it funny that Microsoft has all this money why thry couldnt make better hardware? also the sony is way better to work with definitly for indie games and other playing options like mmos and free to play models. Thats enough for now lol also I dont want to turn the thread into a video game thread

Make sure whoever purchases this set to engage retail mode instead of home mode during setup. Day/night diffrence. Xbox is a whole lot better..Xbox live is the bomb smile.gif

You can use any picture mode in shop/retail mode. It just turns off the ambient sensor and auto shutoff.

I read on the 750 thread about retail/home mode and tried it. No difference as IMRIZZO pointed out it is Vivid mode when you do that. I didn't realize it defaulted to Vivid. So when in Standard mode there is no difference. I posted this in the 750 thread forgot to post back in this thread. I just got excited when my pupils lit up and dialated when the TV torched back at me tongue.gif

You need sunglasses for that mode. It'll burn yoor retina's out.....

I'm already deaf from having to turn the volume up to drown out plasma buzz from my VT50, so I'll refrain from trying retail mode on the hx950 to preserve the eyesight. biggrin.gif

Couple years from now we will all have hearing aids and the huge sunglasses. I'll probably just wear the Monster 3D glasses all the time as I'm skipping around with my walker and iPod hooked up with my Klipsch Image X10i earphones ....what a sight that will be

I'm not saying I won't get a PS4, but its ambiguous on what they have to offer and price point. Any developer will tell you the PS3 is a PITA to program for and it's much more powerful than the 360. But the 360 is optimized and easier to code for. I don't see Microsoft going the PS3 route and I'm sure they learned their lesson from the red ring of death. But how you arrive at Sony being hardcore about gaming now, it's the same song as yesteryear.

I won't speculate, but I like competition and I think it will be a close race this go around as they are trying to milk a decade out of each console releases lifespan.

On the 950 in retail mode, you can make the same changes in the settings. I would guess the tv goes into overdrive in retail mode and potentially wearing the electronics faster. It's a guess, but I see no other benefit unless over saturated images and torch brightness are things you enjoy. Then I could see that.

Also, I can't believe this set is discontinued after a quarter of a year. Went to my local BB and evidently Sony is going to passive 3d glasses. I'm buying up a few more of the TI 3d glasses now as I'd rather have spares if Sony is potentially stranding their customers with such a new release. One thing interesting I did pick up at the magnolia is how a lotmofmother customers are getting equally as frustrated in tv manufacturers for the slim choice and focus on profit maximization and not delivering a good product in the same process. Instead trying to use edge lit tech and wow people by how slim it is from the side. I'm not sure about most, but I stopped admiring. How skinny my tv was a long time ago when I got rid of my CRT and got my first LCD TV a decade ago. Oh, the times are a changin.

The purpose of the Retail Mode is so that the set will standout on showroom floors and hopefully be the one that catches your eye first, because that first impression is usually the deal clincher. Most showroom floors are brightly lit (unless your in the Magnolia Room where the lighting conditions are more subdued).
It's like waving a red flag in front of bull, it'll surely get your attention.

I'm definitely going to get a PS4 when it can be bought without having to camp out. Just not feasible to do that kind of stuff anymore with kids. Hoping it will do 3D games in 1080p.

With current specs for the PS4 and from developer feedback 1080p@60FPS in FullHD 3D may be a possibility

I'm pulling the trigger on 2 of theses in a 65" in a couple of weeks. We made this mistake of believing a salesman that plasma didn't have IR or burn in issues. Thankfully, the two plasmas are going back and I'll be switching to this set. Initial feedback is promising, and I have a son who watches boxed content and we play Xbox.best tablet pc reviews

If I was going to spend $10,000 on TVs, I'd just wait and get the 65X900V2 and like a cheap Vizio or LG as the second.

Microfiber cloth slightly dampened if needed. Some use distilled water as well. Gorilla glass is strong, but like Iphones and ipads, the glass will get light surface scratches quite easily so make sure you always use a microfiber cloth when cleaning and no chemicals unless its a special cleaning kit made for TVs.

Precisely what I did with best buy last year. The boneheaded salesperson said plasma didn't get burn in or IR. A year later I went and got the regional involved and got a 25% discount off the 950 TV set and got two of them at that price as they replaced a 65" vt30 and gt30 set. Cost me another 1000 to do the switch, but I'm happy with not babysitting a TV and my 4 year old watches what he wants. BB tried to not deliver the sets at first because they wanted to discount the set at 25 off the 55-5700 dollar MSRP and get an additional 1500 out of me. I'm glad they backed off and delivered after I said I'd just take them to court as the sale had been closed out the day before and papers signed. Probably more than you wanted to know, but these TV sales guys think misleading other customers high dollar purchases are no big deal. And since best buy wouldn't outright refund my money and let me take my business elsewhere, I think the price was more than fair. Hope you have a good experience and get to enjoy the set as many of us are.
