Sony XBR-HX950 Owners' Thread (XBR-55HX950 and XBR-65HX950) - Page 130

post #3871 of 4487
I decided to use factory stock settings based on the content I'm viewing. For example, I select SPORTS for watching sporting events and Cinema (2) for movies, GAME for gaming, etc. To me, its the way to go. I feel Sony did a really good job with customizing settings based on the content and feel no need to adjust any settings.

I've had the 950 for around a year and its been an awesome set. I see nothing out there that beats this TV.

Your settings are your personal preferences, all the professional calibrators and reviewers turn-off all those settings as they mess up more than they improve, but as I said it's a personal preference. Enjoy.

I recently purchased the Sony 65HX950. Wow what a set! PQ is excellent. I mainly game and watch bluRays and they both looked awesome. 3D was fine despite all the naysaying. SD content did'nt look that great but it was acceptable. There is very faint vertical banding when I watched hockey but I have to concentrate to see it.

I used CNET Kattzamier's setting. Although, I ramped the backlight to 3, set Motionflow to Standard, Neutral for colours. I also ran Calibration using the DVE BD. The settings were about the same. I will say the greens did'nt look quite right using the color lense.

For gaming, I measured input lag using Leo Dobner's input lag tester and clocked it at 42ms in Game mode (with local dimming on standard) In Standard mode I get 110+ ms. The input lag is not bad but I do feel a need to lead my shots a bit Battlefield 3 multiplayer for example. I did'nt feel that it effected my gaming. Splinter Cell: Conviction with it's dark blacks looked amazing.

Movies looked stunning I watched Dark Knight Rises, Avengers and Predator. The thing that really struck coming from my old Sharp LE700 was the color was very striking.

Yea and its sad really because I think the 950 and 850 were 2 of Sony's best HDTV's of 2012 and none of their 2013 models match them in PQ and black levels in my opinion.

Will there be any local dimmers made anymore, from any manufacturers? Or is this the last of a dying breed?

They aint dead just yet IMRIZZO because you can still get them but Sony has discontinued the line and discontinued making full array LED backlighting which I think is a stupid mistake on their part. Nothing wrong with Edge Lit LED backlighting if its done right but full array was the way to go. Heck they even have Edge Lit LED in their new 4K sets. I guess its a cost cutting measure on their part. But again I think its a mistake.

IMRIZZO, somewhere earlier in a post there was info on how to make sure that the full array was turned in with the HX950. If you have them could you either post or forward to me. Yesterday I received my FREE Best Buy calibration. I was completely disappointed with the process. First the guy did not have anything to signify he was ISF certified. I asked for the printout where they compare the before and after calibrations on the grafts. His response was, we do not like to confuse the customers with that. He used a Disc in the BD player and only had a laptop and signal generator. After turning off everything he set what appeared as grey scale and never di I see any color patterns. He spent most of the time without anything connected to the TV adjusting to HIS eyes only. When I said that I would like the picture a little brighter he said, maybe I should cancel the calibration! What an ass.he did not dress the cables, give me a printout, or adjust the AV like they state! I would have really been upset if I had paid for this.

Does the HX950 have a workable service menu to do calibrations?

Bestbuys finest in action, definitely a waste of time and effort.

So the usual Sony sequence "Display, Vol Up, 5, Power" doesn't work on 950?

* SETTING WHITE BALANCE ADJUSTMENTS
White Balance adjustment data is located on the Digital Service
Menu.
1.
TV must be in standby Mode. (POWER off).
2.
Press the following buttons on the Remote Commander
within a second of each other

DISPLAY ......> CHANNEL 5 .........>VOLUME + ......>POWER

* from service tech's manual 929

Please don't misunderstand my tone, I don't mean to be rude.

I know you're very knowledgeable on the 929, but these commands do not work, either of them, on the 950. I think someone else with a 950 can confirm this.

I'm no newbie. I've been into the service modes of the last 3 Sony XBR's I've had.

It does but I wouldn't touch it because if you do and something goes wrong Sony will void your warranty and not do a thing to help you.
