Stereo Integrity's new HT Subwoofer - Page 36

I love hearing these impressions. I don't even have mine finished and I keep second guessing myself that I should have either picked up 8, or that I need to add another amp to my 6. The more I hear the listening impressions on 2 and 4 setups, I'm thinking I will be perfect content with 6 run off of 2500 watts.............for now. smile.gif

I dont know how big your space is. The living room these are in actually opens up to the rest of the house and upstairs. its over 6000ft^. i get some boundary reinforcement from the walls, but little room gain. I wouldnt second guess yourself wink.gif

Brian do you listen to much music? If you get a chance to, what are your impressions of the sound quality when it comes to music? thanks!
Apparently, the EP4000 only does 950w RMS per channel at 4ohm. Is there any other reasonably priced amp that can hit 1,500w RMS per channel at 4ohm? The FP clones are too powerful for just 1 channel of dual opposed SIs. I need to have an extra channel for a second eventual dual opposed box.

I have 1100 rms @ 4 ohms or 2200 @ 2ohms. i would have to get a d2s that are out of stock, but with that amount of power what size would it need and if it is sealed how low will it go? 20s or teens?

the EP4K bridged into 4 ohms is like 1950 watts. ill be using one EP4K for each box. so just buy 1 EP4K for now and run it bridged. then buy another one if you build another box.

Inuke nu6000 would do 1.8 -2 kW @4 ohm stereo.

$400
$500 for the DSP version

The dedicated theater is about a 1/3 that size, lol. I'm guessing I should be good to go for a while. smile.gif

I'd also be interested to hear your impressions on its musical ability.

I was about 7db hot for the movies. Once I got the level down to where they blend in with my mains, I think they sound great. Very natural. They add punch, weight and depth to the sound without bringing attention to themselves. Just as a good sub should do IMO.

I listened to:

Bluray:

Slipknot
Anthrax
Santana
Lee Ritenour

Apple lossless:

Metallica
Duke Ellington
Miles Davis
David Brubeck
Yellowjackets
Antoine Dufour
Chick Corea
Diana Krall
Steely Dan

They all sound great to me.

That sounds good. I figured ~1000w per driver would be too much to run safely.

It's coming down to an EP4000, or one of the lower model clones that can do ~1,350-1,500w per channel, depending on price. Those clones have an excellent S/N ratio, if the claims are true.

i pulled up that Bass I love you song on You Tube. that was interesting. Then i played some "Ultimate Subwoofer Test" or something. GEEEEZ whole lotta bass coming out of these puppies. On Bass I Love you, i was watching the tissue in the tissue box, on the end table next to me, move back and forth like there was a breeze.

I don't know how you normally listen to music, but I find that putting your receiver in stereo mode and then moving the crossover point higher works well. I cross mine at 100 Hz for stereo playback and I have very capable mains. Just a thought.

Ok so I have been doing more music listening.

Have no fear Carp. These sound great for music. I have had many ID subs. My two best and favorite were the Rythmik FV15HP and the SVS PB13-ULTRA with the 1000 watt Sledge amp. The Rythmik had a very dry, surgically accurate sound. The Ultra was very accurate as well but had what I consider a thicker sound to it. Call it warmer if you will. I actually preferred the sound of the Ultra, but they both sound awesome. IMO, in my setup and in my room, the Stereo Integrity drivers fall somewhere in between the two, but closer to the SVS. They reproduce every note very well with a underlying warmness that lightly energizes the room. Crap. I sound like one of those Sound and Vision dudes now smile.gif

Anyway. There was some folks getting nervous over some comments made between the SI and the Dayton and I'm just writing to say "calm down". I've heard some of the best ID offerings and these drivers are right there with them. I have not heard the Dayton 18 but I have had the 15HF's and they sound awesome so I'm sure the Dayton 18 sounds great as well.

I still cannot get over the quality of product Stereo Integrity has put out with these drivers at this price. If you guys are making a good profit off these, they will be darlings for quite a while!

It all depends on a lot of things and experimentation is the only way to find out what works best for you. Honestly, I could still run my Cornscalas full range by themselves at normal levels and be happy with music listening. I do find that everything is a bit more clear using the subs. The mains just have less sound to try and reproduce and your rewarded with much less distortion at mid to high levels. Although I have always found anything over 80 to be too high. The subs become localized to me. I think I'm more sensitive to that

Great to hear Brian! If I don't end up selling off my LMS-U's before I get my new boxes built for the SI's, I might try to do some critical listening between the two, just for the hell of it..

No doubt! Great driver for the money, without question!

Quick update on my situation. Nick should be coming out to my place tomorrow to swap the D4's with the D2's. Pretty stoked! Might even unbox all of them just to get a pic in an ocean of subs... lol

Thanks Brian for the impressions and comparisons, can't wait to hear these things! smile.gif

I am building a rather large T-TWQP design this summer (http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/subwoofers/198056-th-t-tqwp-8.html) based on the Maelstrom-X Gen II 18" driver (no longer available). I plugged in the numbers from the first post into HornResp using the new SI driver. Result: 120 dB at 15 Hz with 500W input (4 ohms). I've attached a file with the HornResp data and a diagram of the folded enclosure. May build one for the Mal-X and one with the SI this summer.eek.gif

Gah. I just need one HT18D2. Just one! I hope they get them in stock soon, I have the money sitting here waiting.

My drivers arrived today already. Damn that was quick.

For those that have seen the prototypes and production... Any reason to think the mounting holes and driver cutouts won't be the same?

Finishing up my second box but no D2 on hand for it. Fingers crossed that they'll be available again soon.

I just routered my driver baffles last night. Outside diameter is 18.5" and I cut the inside to 16 - 11/16" which allows the driver to fit perfectly.

Well I got home from a week trip in Cancun and boy was I surprised when dad said, "Four boxes showed up, I think they are speakers or something." eek.gif I thought they were shipping them to Carp's so was very pleasantly surprised. I couldn't wait and managed to get one of them out.cool.gif

Bad news, I had a few too many complimentary beverages and threw out my back playing beach volleyball. I can't even get them to the basement but man is that a sexy looking driver.biggrin.gif

Between what looks to be good looking QC and excellent packaging, has there been a single injured driver upon delivery? I am waiting on the flat packs as I just don't have the time with the 10 month old on the move and the recent injury to get into building my own. Look forward to testing them out as soon as I can, probably just use the little t amp on the desktop free air.smile.gif

Getting good use out of 2 of them already!

Edit: added couple pics

Here are ideas on a pair of slotted 18 SI D4 powered using EP4000 signal from miniDSP

12 ft^3 tuned to 18 Hz wired as 2 Ohm at 820W

9 ft^3 tuned to 18 Hz wired as 2 Ohm at 820W

16 ft^3 tuned to 14 Hz wired as 8 Ohm at 450W

edit two boxes wired in parallel. I also added a HPF and EQ at 20hz

Brian,

Looks great!

What did you apply to finish the stain? Poly, or other?
