The "Overwhelmed Newbie's Slowest Theater Project Ever..." with pictures included, finally! :)

OK --

Now that I'm approaching three years since starting this project, and have asked for tons of advice and read through tons of posts along the way, I am finally entering the home stretch (as I mentioned yesterday in my original thread here -- http://www.avsforum.com/t/1196367/anyone-willing-to-help-an-overwhelmed-newbie-with-design/60 )

I took some quick pictures today of where I stand on this project -- basically I'm in immersed in the trim carpentry stage at this point, and hoping to finish up in a few weeks. Then I'll need to stain the trim, have carpet installed, finish my DIY screen, and then I'll be ready to add the finishing touches -- installing the projector and other electronics, black-out shade on the windows, etc. I have purchased my seating and most of the components (receiver, speakers, subwoofer, projector), so I really do expect the theater to be ready for a "grand opening" within the next 6 weeks or so.

While the pictures are not great, they will give some idea as to how things look at this point.

Here's a picture as you enter through the main door into the hallway which leads to the theater:

Here's a picture a few steps into the hallway; you can see the entrance into the main theater straight ahead, and then another entrance into a smaller room off to the left -- this is a "kitchenette," and behind it, my equipment closet:

main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=1488

Here's a look from the hallway into the kitchenette; obviously, I still need a countertop; there will be a microwave and a popcorn popper on the counter, and a mini-fridge in that space in the base cabinets:

main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=1491

Now, stepping through the back of the kitchenette, here's a look into the equipment closet (note that you can see through the "rack" opening into the theater room itself):

main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=1478

Walking back out of the kitchenette, and through the entry into the main theater -- looking back toward the rear of the room to the riser area:

main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=1509

Here's a look at the right-hand wall of the theater, from roughly the first seating row position, with the screen wall to the left, and the riser area to the right of the picture. The openings in the wall are for the equipment rack, and below that the subwoofer "nook," and then to the right of those is an opening that will house some shelves for DVDs and CDs:

main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=1482

Here's a view of the screen wall, from up on the front edge of the "riser level"...note the openings for L/R speakers either side of the screen, and for the center speaker above; these openings will be within paneled wood columns, with the "panel" where the speaker opening exists being covered in black GOM cloth:

main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=1500

And finally, here's a view of the screen wall looking a bit diagonally from the front of the riser level, near the right-hand wall:

main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=1497

While the pictures are not great, they give some idea of where this project stands!

Thanks for looking,

Steve

(embarrased look on face)

OK, I concede. My thread title is flat wrong. I don't deserve to mention "slow" in my title! smile.gif

Dude, that's HILARIOUS!

By my count, your are like seven years into your theater project? Is that correct?!?! Man, when you planned that project, they probably didn't even have HDTV yet... smile.gif

Just kidding...thanks for a great laugh! I stand corrected... wink.gif

SEVEN, count 'em SEVEN, years.

But I'm in the home stretch now! Yeah, I should be finished, oh, any month now.

pfffft. You amateurs. I started in 1999. eek.gif

Right. I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night, half an hour before I went to bed, drink a cup of sulphuric acid, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad and our mother would kill us, and dance about on our graves singing 'Hallelujah.'

But you try and tell the young people today that... and they won't believe ya'.

Ted -
Any pIctoral evidience and public ridicule to prove you're not finished yet?

I'm just sayin'.

Well, the outside of my theater door is unpainted gray steel and my lobby equipment rack looks like it's installed in a barn

You guys are hilarious! smile.gif

I'm glad I'm not the only one who hits a few, ahh, snags, from time to time... smile.gif

Won't be long now, though, I promise! rolleyes.gif

How about taking five or six years off, then slowly trying to get one finished?

Yeah, that would be me. frown.gif

Vorlon -- I can relate; I basically took 2 years off, but I'm back in business now. I've gotten quite a bit more of the trim carpentry done now; my screen wall's woodwork surrounding the future screen location is nearly complete, and I estimate I'm 2/3 to 3/4 of the way done with the trim work. After that, it's stain/poly on the woodwork, and then carpeting, and then some final "odds and ends..." and I'll be ready to go. I got my speakers and subwoofer delivered in the last few days...I can see light at the end of the tunnel! smile.gif

Well, I continue to make decent progress on my theater; as of tonight, I will be basically finished with the trim carpentry. A few more pieces of chair rail (which I'll finish after work), and then a few more nail holes and such to fill with wood putty. At that point, it's sanding, taping, staining, and polyurethane, as well as some touch-up painting on the walls.

Along with the staining of the woodwork, I still need to mount the projector and the speakers, I still need to mount and paint my DIY screen, and still need to terminate my speaker wires with banana plugs, and then put on the wall plates. All the furniture and electronics have been purchased; now all that's needed are blackout shades for the window, and a popcorn popper, microwave, and mini fridge for the kitchenette. Carpet is being installed October 31, so I'm shooting for a "grand opening" of the theater on Friday, November 2!

I try and take some pictures tonight, with the trim carpentry finished but not stained. I'm getting real excited at this point, as I can really see the light at the end of the tunnel, now...

Thanks for reading!
