TCL LCD TV's by TTE Technology: Anyone have any experiance with one?

While looking for a suitable TV for a friend, I stumbled upon this line of TV's. I remember seeing the name before, but dismissed it since I never heard of it.
Doing some research, Amazon sells many of these. I like Amazon Marketplace and Amazon Warehouse Deals due to their 30 day return policy and free shipping. Also, the reviews are somewhat useful if you can weed out the 'emotional' ones. wink.gif
Best Buy and Vanns also carry some of the models.

Taken from Wikipedia;
Quote:
TCL Corporation is a Chinese multinational electronics company headquartered in Huizhou, Guangdong, China. In 2010 it was the world's 25th-largest consumer electronics producer and sixth-largest television producer (after Samsung, LG, Sony, Panasonic and Sharp). In April 2008 Samsung Electronics announced that it would be outsourcing the production of some LCD TV modules to TCL.

A couple things stood out. First a two year warranty and second, the description and facts of their corporate structure unlike many other unknown names that are just 'importers';

There are 21 LED backlighted LCD models from 24" to 55" (10 models might be only slight variants in each series) and only six CCFL backlighted models from 26" to 40". There is a "TA" and a "TT" version of most of the LED driven sets. There is no 'comparison chart' or data sheet for any, so I don't have any idea what the difference is. It might be just for "marketing" purposes. The apparent downside of the CCFL's are the very wide bezel compared to the LED driven sets.

It seems all the sets except for a few older CCFL LCD's only have one of each; composite, VGA, USB, component, but two HDMI inputs with a headphone and coaxial audio outputs. The somewhat older sets also have a 2nd composite and component, S-video and a 3rd HDMI showing the typical cost cutting that all manufactures seem to do with newer models.

Notice they have direct links to Amazon reviews of the selected model.

Their warranty has a provision for TCL paying to ship the set to a service facility if one isn't near you. Models larger than 33" could be serviced in the home. Link for their "Service Locater";

The instructions show no ability to add a channel that wasn't added in the original scan. There is no "add channel" through an additional scan that doesn't delete the existing channel map or the ability to add a single channel.
I asked about this and as usual, the girl that answered the phone was clueless. I asked for someone else, but she said there wasn't any around. I then asked for a response when some is available.

Also, I mentioned there are no dimensions listed for their TV's. She did say they have been working on their web soite and did give me dimensions for a 40" ^ 39" as follows;

40" - 39"x27"x10" 38 lbs (CCFL driven model)
39" - 35"x23"x9" 23 lbs (LED driven model)

I questioned the huge weight difference between the two, but that is what she had in front of her.

You state, "Their warranty has a provision for TCL paying to ship the set to a service facility if one isn't near you."

But if you go back and read the warranty, this is what it says-

"If repaired at an Authorized TCL Service Center, TTE is not responsible for transportation costs
to the Authorized TCL Service Center."

Read the warranty VERY CAREFULLY!!
