Good Receiver ..

Hi,
I'm on the lookout for a receiver+speakers - ideally my max budget would be about €1000, (approx. $1400) .

Now the main issue is , it looks like I won't be able to do a 5.1 set up, so if I get 3 speakers (center + FR, FL) and a subwoofer, will the receiver re mix the back sounds to the other speakers ?

Thanks

I don't know of any receiver that will remix the back channels and combine them with the front channels and get a convincing surround effect. There are manufacturers that claim to get surround effects with 2 channel equipment. Bose for one...

EDIT: There - I finished my train of thought...

You should consider factory referb's so as to increase your buying power. A Marantz, SR5006 will get you where you want to go as to full features, pre-outs, Audyssey MultEQ XT and build quality.

I have no idea regarding price, availability and/or what you can find where you're located. If you state your general location, maybe some locals forum members will be able to give some local ideas as to whom you can purchase a unit from. As to speakers, buy three matching speakers for front left/center/front right for timbre matching. In your stated budget range, of late, Polk Audio and Pioneer seem to be getting all the rave reviews.

Downmixing from 5.1 to 2.0/2.1 has been possible for a long time in DVD days, players and AVRs, surely it's possible to downmix to 3.1ch or any number of channels, or have I missed something fundamental?

+1

Most (if not all) AVRs will downmix a 5.1 signal to as few as 2 channels (ie. will downmix to 3.1 without issue).

Will it downmix it automatically or will I need to set it up somehow ?
Automatically .... once the AVR is configured using the unit's Auto EQ program to identify how many speakers are connected.

Be sure to run the Auto EQ program (MCACC).

Only thing is , doesn't have an iPod dock .... Pity

An iPod can also be connected via a 3.5mm to RCA cable as well as a USB cable.

I'm reading strange reviews that say the hdmi isn't compatible with some tvs ?
My tv has hdmi 1.3 , this pioneer vsx s300 has hdmi 1.4 , surely it's back compatible ?
HDMI connections can sometimes be iffy with some TV models, although it's generally not HDMI 1.4 vs. 1.3 related. If the TV is HDMI 1.3, it just means that the Audio Return Channel (ARC) feature won't work with the AVR.

By design, FWIW, by purposeful HDMI standard, HDMI is 100% backwards compatible. Take that check to the HDMI bank and it will cash, every day of the week. The caveat, you must have a HDMI 1.4a rated cable.

^^
Actually, it doesn't matter whether the cable is labeled HDMI 1.3 or HDMI 1.4 as long as it's a High Speed cable it will pass 1080p video. Any cable will pass ARC audio, as the HDMI spec applies to the device and not the cable.
