Surround setup 5.1 or 7.1 for my Living Room

Thread Starter
I have a 17' x 16' area in my 17x 28' room. Screen on one side, couch about 3' in front of the wall opposite the screen.

Should I install these new Monitor Audio RxFX on the back wall above the couch? (To replace my current cheap-o realistic metal speakers pointing downward, used as surround Back speakers in 5.1 configuration?

Or should I mount them there but use them as 7.1's .. I'm using a Denon 4311ci. I see they have a configuration which uses the Surround Left and Surround Right behind the listener, and no Surround Back speakers. But, I haven't seen clearly how to configure the Denon for this exact mode or if it would be advisable.

What sayeth the experts and folks with knowledgable opinions?

(Or should I take them back???)

(Front speakers are Definitive Technology Studio Monitor 55's with Klipsch Center Channel and 10" powered Sub)

Thanks

Well, in 5.1 there is no surround back in the first place. Surrounds should be to the sides of the listening position, perhaps back and to the side if that's all you can fit. For 7 ch leave your least speakers for the rear surrounds and add your new ones to the sides. Possibly move your couch up a bit towards the screen. Are you using stands or wall/ceiling mounts? When I had 5 ch mounting restrictions did put the surrounds up to the rear and sides pointed towards the listening position, but I much prefer the 7 ch and use that old surround position for rear surrounds and have surrounds to the left and right of the listening position.
