replace broken vp50 or get uh480 for RS40 and scope screen

my vp50 just crapped out and I just got sold a RS40 (instead of the RS45) so now I am having trouble with 16:9 material on my 10' wide scope screen.

Which way should I go? Get another vp50 or a good high quality a-lens?

I have tried a couple of cheaper lenses before but didn't work out. I think the quality of the lens wasn't good enough.

Could I just save two different screen sizes to my remote and pick custom 1 or custom 2 for different aspect ratios?

The throw ratio according to Panamorp's site would be ideal. I am just a little gun shy about trying another a lens.

What had you tried before?
What is your throw ratio?

You may be able to use the smaller Isco. I have a b-stock available.

You could get a Lumagen Mini 3D for a reasonable price to fit the image to your screen. Then add a lens to take your system to the next level. The vertical stretch performed by the Mini does a better job than the RS40, resulting in a better image with the A-lens.

12 years ago I tried a verticle compression lens with a 720p sanyo projector. The throw ratio was short so it had a bit of pincushion. It improved the pic but was too hard to use with the processing available to me then.

2 - 3 years ago I tried a panamorph uv200 with a vp50 and samsung sp-a800b. the ration was fine but I preferred the sharpness zooming that projector. I really didn't spend much time at all with that lens.

btw, it looks like my vp50 did not die, it is just that the rs40 doesn't want to sync with it. the vp50 works fine with other displays

to update I just obtained a uh480 and the jvc vendor is kind enough to allow me to return the rs40 and pay the difference on a rs46 when it comes out. Hopefully the rs46 will play nice with my vp50 and the 480 will be of high enough quality that I will have 'taken it to the next level'

I hope the vp50 does the job so that I can leave the lens in place for all material.

Special thanks to the vendor who is allowing me to exchange the rs40!!!

I got the lens in the mail today and have been messing with it for a couple hours. More like I stuck it in front of the Samsung SP-A800B and watched a couple of hours worth of Star Trek and Directv trying to decide if I like it or not.

At first I did not like it AT ALL. I thought it was a couple steps backward in sharpness and detail. However, as I switched back and forth between zooming and using the 480 I grew to like the lens more and more. It makes the picture look more 'real' to me somehow. I guess that is because it smooths out the pixel/grid structure. Naturally that makes it look less sharp (since I have been used to watching the dlp for over a thousand hours), but the images seem to look more solid and natural.

I am glad I got the lens. It brought the Samsung a step closer to the quality of the RS40. I am hoping that it will step up the picture of the rs46 when it comes.

Thanks Greg, long time no talk. Have you seen the RS46 in action?

I am glad that I had the RS40 for a short time because, with the addition of the Darbee and the lens I would have been satisfied for a few more years what with the improvement they brought to the Samsung. That is still a great projector.

Now that I have seen the latest JVC's I'm definately Jones'n for one. If I wasn't so busy I would sell some of my old gear to make up the difference and get the RS4810 instead. I just don't think I have the time to do it right now before the release of the 2013 JVC's. I've got several amps, IB woofers, butt kicker transducers and butt kicker amp and B & W and other speakers etc. I guess I am kind of a AV hoarder.

Update:

The 4810 is awesome but still will not play with the dvdo.

The 4810 seems to do a decent job scaling so I think I will leave the 480 in place all of the time (even though no lens looks better for 16:9).

4810 + Darbee + Lens = pretty cool.

Just as an aside, the UV200 / FVX200 is supposed to be used at a throw ratio of at least 4.3X the screen height. That is a pretty long throw for most people. If you are closer than that you might get some vignetting plus more barrel distortion than you may be comfortable with. It would be interesting to know your throw distance / ratio when you tried the 200 lens.

As above, I would be curious to know your throw ratio and distance. You should not be seeing any softening of the picture provided you are within specs.

Glad to know that ultimately you prefer the image with the lens! smile.gif
