I have the above system with stock speakers and Sub setup. It works just fine but am interested in upgrading the speakers. Front towers and everything else too. Not sure if I need to upgrade the Sub. Original current specs are as below. I am looking to match the speaker output to this Amplifier as optimally as I can. I am flexible on the budget but something reasonable and cost effective will be better. Room size is around 20x16 ft

Ok you can definitely get better speakers and sub to run with that receiver... However we need a more accurate budget. Some ppl on here might say $500 for budget some might say $50k so an approx budget will help a lot.

Also take the onkyo specs like a grain of salt. Their speaker freq resp is way off cuz they didn't list the -3db point. And I guarentee that the sub will not hit 25hz with authority. So if someone suggests speakers and sub that look like they have worse specs don't be worried about it.

Around $2000 for speaker setup. Do I need any better sub? Does this stock sub not have good power? Subwoofer: 290 W
Speakers Frequency Response
Front: 60 Hz–50 kHz

Yes. It is definitely worth replacing the sub. A good 12" sub would be just as much of an upgrade as investing in better speakers with your budget.

Here's one possible setup that would be a significant upgrade for approximately $1750:

Energy V6.2 (front L/R)
Energy V5.2C (center)
Energy RC-10 (rear)
HSU VTF-2 MK4 sub

I got all of them except the sub so far. Now begins the long wait. The black center was out of stock. When I called them they redirected me to amazon and was able to find it there. Thanks for your help. Will update how it sounds...once I have it set up.

Just realized I bought these Center speakers instead of what was listed above...Energy Speaker Systems 72-21168 RC-LCR Center Speaker (Black) I think they should be fine as well.

You just said these Center speakers (plural).

So you bought 2 V6.2's, 2 LCR's and 2 RC-10s? Is that correct?

The V5.2 is really the matching center for the V6.2.

And if you really want the RC LCR you can get it for $100 less from here.

Agreed. The V5.2C is the better match as a center. Cancel your Amazon order on the RC-LCR. Amazon has both the black and rosenut in stock: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Energy+V5.2C.

And you only need one of them for the center.

Thanks. I ordered the 5.2 center speaker and will cancel the rclcr. They only had 1 left in black. Just in time.

What do u make out of this? One of the reviewers at Vanns. I have both shipping from Amazon as of right now. Which one should I cancel...confused.

"On paper, the two speakers have the same frequency response and the same size. In listening comparison, the V5.2C is very bright and lacking in bass. The s and t sounds in dialogue feel artificially emphasized to gain clairity. After a while, I found it annoying and switched back to the RC-LCR. The difference is not due to break-in. Rather, the V5.2C perhaps spend more money in the exterior finish, which is glossy like pianos on all sides, but its a 2-way system with 3 drivers. The RC-LCR is a 3-way system with 5 drivers. The bass drivers are listed as 5.25 on both, but the ones on v5.2C are actually about half and inch smaller. "

Here is another comparison...
