I'm holding off on purchasing an Integra 80.3 until I hear more about this unit. But which to choose...?

Don't get the Integra. I used to own the 885 and the Marantz (AV7005) sounds much better without question
post #4 of 5660
This is solely my opinion, but I have read about way too many problems with Onkyo/Integra units to viably consider them (customer service issues as well). I've had my AV7005 for more than a year now, and I'm simply amazed how trouble free it's been. Software, hardware, operation, etc. But I also know that a lot of owners have had the same experience with Onkyo/Integra units too. Just that there seems to have been a lot more reports of issues with them too.
Any news on the 8801, Its coming down to peace of mind for me as I tend to sleep little better when something works at least 80% as it should. The Integra's are nice but the 8801 has me willing to wait to see how things pan out over the next few months, if it has balanced inputs and the prokit its a deal closer for me;)
I've been following the Integra 80.3 thread for a while, and users seem to be raving about it. It's going to be a tough decision for me. Right now I have a Denon 4308 which I use as a pre/pro. It's a good unit, but the interface and remote are pretty horrible. Audyssey XT32 is the big thing for me, which both the Integra and the new Marantz (presumably) have. If the Marantz has an interface like the Denon I currently have, I may have to go for the Integra. Although I do think Marantz gear has a "classier" look...
Yep! the decision is coming down between the two 8801 or 80.3, although audyssey is an curiosity for me! My current Anthem avm 20 has served me well with its analog bypass, but the pursuit of the absolute sound must continue:D
post #8 of 5660
I'm leaning towards this over the 80.3, but where are the specs!
Last word I heard was out this Dec, i have one on order with my dealer.
I too am excited about 8801. When might we see pre/pro with hdmi 1.4b?

Did the Dealer tell what the MSRP was? I assume he charged you retail.
I was told the price has not settled yet from Marantz. He is guessing somewhere around 3,400-3,600.
One differance "maybe" about it, it does have a 32/192 DAC. The Denon 4520CI has 24/192 Not sure about this part. AL24 processing is 24/192 but it also shows. 32-bit/192-kHz, Burr Brown.
This might be a part of it Denon True 24-bit/96-kHz Digital Input Capability. I am hearing the Marantz is 32/196 through out, Have to wait to find that part out.
11.2 VS. 9.2 etc. I think this is the route I want to go.

I can't tell you how and where I got this but here's a picture of the back panel of the new AV-8801. I'm sure everyone will enjoy this. This thing is going to be a BEAST!!!!!!!!!!

^ Nice!

^^^

Do my eyes deceive me? Or do I see "Made in Japan" right above the AC plug?

biggrin.gif

Yaaay !! My AV7005 was made in Japan, and I worried that this one might be made in China like recent AV7005's ...
If I bot this, I would be hooking it up to an amp
w/o xlr plugs. Does anyone have any thoughts
on using xlr to rca plugs? Would this be an
improvement on simple rca to rca?

Thanks.

11.2, balanced XLR in and XT32 is very nice, the only obvious problem is lack of 12V triggers, 2 triggers is very short for 4 zones.
Most people installing this pre/pro in a theater are going to be using some type of control system via RS-232. This kind of makes the need for 12 volt triggers irrelevant. It also has IP control just like all of the new Marantz pre/pros and receivers and some of the IP Control products out are phenomenal. Many things coming out these days have IP control so you can trigger things to come on by setting them to wake on your home network.
This is rising fast to the top of my list! Really struggling waiting for details. :-)
Some of the details that I was able to get after getting the picture are:

1) This unit will definitely have Audyssey Mult XT32.
2) There is an HDMI matrix switch built in to the unit just like the one on the Denon AVR-4520CI.
3) This unit does have 32/192 DAC's.
4) The retail price is slated at $3199 right now. This could go up slightly by December/January time frame but it won"t be any higher than $3499.
5) All of the same network features that the AV-7701 will be in the 8801 as well as some "special" network features.

That's all for now.

Fully balanced XLR connections don't make a difference with cable lengths under 10' or so. If you have runs of less than that save your money and buy a good movie or some music.

Use RCA to RCA in your situation. I have both. RCA to RCA for the surrounds & will use XLR to XLR on both Subs & my front 3 channels. I prefer XLR, but My amp for the surrounds is RCA only.
Sweet! To bad I'm loosing my job in a week! Looks like a worthy successor to my B&K ref70! I'm guessing it has the same stupid front panel as the other Marantz. Analog inputs look a little confusing in layout to me. Would be nice for another digital and hdmi input and a digital output. I also like a couple s video inputs but could live without that feature.
I just wish Marantz has a version of DenonLink that they included in their universal players.
Thanks all, I'll try rca to rca. A retail price of $3,199 seems a bit pricey, to me.
The Marantz AV7005 and AV7701 are $400 more than their Denon counterparts (3311CI, 3313CI), so yes, the the 8801 is higher at $700 more than the 4520CI.
The 8003 was a $2,400 item, if I'm not mistaken.
The Denon counterpart at that time was the 3808CI ($1600), although the Denon offered the more advanced version of Audyssey MultEQ XT vs. only MultEQ on the 8003.

DSD accepted over HDMI?
