Head over to the Audyssey thread for more details, but make sure there is minimal ambient noise, probe facing the ceiling, ear level, recline seats if applicable (I like to put a blanket of the leather as well), clear line of site to all speakers, assure the mic is isolated from vibrations during the test, try the recommended testing pattern and spacing, etc...

Theres something I don't understand, you put planket on the leather, other I have head mention they removed the seats while using roomkorrektion. Should the messurements be taken as the room is when used?
If in your case you take away the soundreflections of the leather, shouldn't it been corrected with all the rooms faults?

I have now bought a stand for the mic, so I don't hold it myself anymore. But shouldt I be then sitting in the sitting posision, as I'm part of the room when I'm listening?
I have a leather reclainer. As some sound will reflect off the back and onto the floor, I should then be sitting in the normal listening posision to get the most accurat results?

I'm considering switching out my Integra DHC-80.1 for this Marantz. I've never been happy with the Integra. But the Integra does have many, many inputs - and I have many, many devices.

For example, I want to hook up both a PS3 and a PS2 - but they need to "share" an input since the 8801 really doesn't have enough inputs for me. SO - with the 8801 - can I "stack" them on the same input?

Basically, can I:

- plug in the PS3 HDMI cable to the "GAME" HDMI input
- and plug in the PS2 component video and Fiber Optic audio inputs and also assign those to "GAME"?

- and then - if the PS3 is on (and the PS2 is off) - play/watch the PS3 via the 8801 "GAME" selection?
- and also - if the PS3 is off and the PS2 is on - play/watch the PS2 via that same 8801 "GAME" selection? Maybe pressing an input select to change the video from looking at the HDMI to instead look at the component video (when both are assigned to "GAME")?

That's what I mean be stacking. And I may need to stack on a few different inputs in order to plug in all the sources I need to plug in...

Thanks,
Bill

There should be any problems with that. Just assign the different inputs to the AV8801, but only 1 of each type to an input. It will prioritice HDMI, Digital, Analog. So if the PS3 is on, it will ho to that input automaticly, but off it will go to the analog for the PS2.
You should be able to switch manually too.

This is how I have used my AV8003, and it have worked perfectly. Luckly for me, the AV8801 have just enough inputs for my devices. One more, and I have to stack them.

^^^ I am curious about this too....how do you switch it manually if need be?

Quick comment, I have found the 8801 likes a VERY quiet room when running Audyssey. When I have noise from my projector I got poor results. I moved a computer monitor 1080P in the room, shut off the furnace. House was pretty quiet, got good results.

^^
excellent point & true of all room EQ correction systems, not just Audyssey wink.gif need to have a quiet room, even turn HVAC off while its running.

Everyone talks about how revealing Audyssey is, and its true...it's revealed how many cars pass by and planes fly overhead...never noticed that until running a calibration!

Red the fine print...it says you must calibrate between 3:00 and 4:00 am...that way the streets are quiet and your local airport has implemented a no fly zone per contractual agreement with Audyssey biggrin.gif

Same here.

You really have to start thinking about things like the refrigerator in the next room, blower fans on equipment, etc.

I go as far as turning off the display before running the first test tone which would be the equivalent of your turn off your projector. Don't know if it really matters but at least I'm doing as much as I can.

Maybe it should do be done the other way around:

Install a bunch of microphones in your room, assign which of those are at desired listening positions and wait until enough "outside noise" data has been collected to calculate the characteristics of the room. Then have each speaker give of some loud noise to determine level and delay, enter speaker brand and type for each speaker and get the results.

I feel I'm close to a winning formula here, now where did I leave those patent entry forms... biggrin.gif

My projector is only a few feet behind the MLP, slight above head height, so I always turn it off.

I actually leave the room when the test tones are playing. I'm always afraid I'm going to cough or make some other bodily noise and screw everything up!

Yes.

Now where do I set the Crossover on the REL? And how high should the High Level Volume on the REL be? The instructions are a bit vague on this.
REL's instructions are vague because they have to be done largely by ear. Getting the timing, crossover freq, and gain setting "correct" is a blend of art and science, and taste! But the process is the same as for 2-ch stereo setups, so if you can find a REL user group, they probably have a lot of good tips.

Why do you say that? What does LFE have to do with the decision to run the mains full range?

Coming from the 4520 and owning now a 8801, I can confirm that this 8801 bug concerns the DTS Neo X 11 processing with Dolby TrueHD or DTS MA input tracks.

In my case D&M EU Product Mngr has been direclty informed... along with the web interface subs display bug.

Make sure you are not changing inputs. Settings are specific for each input.

Supposedly, the firmware fix for this, and maybe a few other things, will be around 2/5

sarcasm aside smile.gif, would'nt Audyssey compensate (or "over-compensate" in this case) for these kinds of random exterior noise transients (street noise, helicopters, etc.,...)? What I'm getting at here is I've noticed, while operating my living-room theater set-up (using a new Denon AVR w/Audyssey) in very close proximity of the front yard/sidewalk and busy street, there does exist an "average" ambient noise level externally. I've made maybe two different Audyssey measurements (8-position) since having this new set-up, both approx. between 09:00pm and 10:00pm (typical time frame we're usually watching movies). After watching many features now in the last few months, and tweaking settings (ie. Cinema EQ, Dynamic EQ, etc.,...) , I'm mostly impressed with overall surround performance, even while consiously aware of outside random noise transients.

I'd say constant level background noise would be no problem (some level is simply unavoidable, even during the small hours), but cars passing close by would be harmful. Decent glazing and good window seals would help.

Thanks again, Roger! Unfortunately, I couldn't find any Rel user groups, and haven't gotten much response in the dedicated Rel thread here at AVS. If you have any suggestions for getting those settings right, I would love that. Feel free to PM so I don't hijack this thread any further!

That's a good question with the AV8801. I have to get mine first to find out, but I've bet there is a way.
The remote don't seem to have the "A/D" button my AV8003 have

Greetings, Marantz fans:

Question 1 of 2:

I'm strongly considering the AV8801 (and the Bryston SP3) for my 7.2 system and have questions on two features that are key for me: dual subwoofers and speaker configurations. I've read the manual and this thread but could not find a discussion that helped me. First, let me ask you about subwoofers.

Stereo subwoofer outputs (my subs are connected with in-wall single-ended RCA cables that I cannot change):

1. How would I connect and switch the AV8801 to use stereo subs when playing two-channel audio?

2. How would I connect and switch the AV8801 to use stereo subs when playing multichannel audio?

3. How would I connect and switch the AV8801 to use the subs for LFE when playing multichannel movies?

FYI, here's the equipment:

Amplifiers
Bryston 6B-SST(C): front L/C/R
Bryston 4B-SST(C): surround L/C/R
Bryston 4B-SST(C): rear L/C/R

Speakers
Paradigm Reference Signature S8: fronts L/R
Paradigm Reference Signature C5: front C
Paradigm Reference Signature ADP: surrounds L/R
Paradigm Reference Signature S4: rears L/R
Velodyne DD15 subwoofers (2): subwoofers L/R

Digital Sources
Oppo BDP 105 (scheduled for purchase to replace BDP-83)
Bryston BDP-2 Digital Player (scheduled for purchase)
Bryston BDA-2 D/A Converter (scheduled for purchase)

Thanks, audio fans. I very much appreciate your help.

Deja hi, Marantz fans:

Question 2 of 2:

As noted in my previous post, I'm strongly considering the AV8801 (and the Bryston SP3) for my 7.2 system and have questions on two features that are key for me: dual subwoofers and speaker configurations. I've read the manual and this thread but could not find a discussion that helped me. My second query is on speaker configuration.

Can the AV8801 handle multiple speaker configurations?

I have a 7.2 speaker system (detailed below) and would like to set up three configurations: two-channel (2.2) audio, 5.2 audio, 7.2 movies. (I recall that the original Denon AVP-A1HD pre-pro used to allow for two surround configurations, but wonder if the AV8801 does so.)

1. How would I connect and switch the AV8801 to use my speaker system for 7.2 movies? I assume I'd use the standard FL/C/FR, SL/SR, RL/RR, and SW1/SW2 outputs on the AV8801.

2. How would I switch the AV8801 to use my speaker system for two-channel audio with stereo (or dual) subwoofers?

3 Is it possible to switch out the surround L/R speakers and replace with them with the rear L/R speakers for 5.2 audio (i.e., replace the diffuse Paradigm ADP speakers with the point-source Paradigm S4 speakers)? If so, how would I switch the AV8801 to perform this function?

FYI, here's the equipment:

Amplifiers
Bryston 6B-SST(C): front L/C/R
Bryston 4B-SST(C): surround L/C/R
Bryston 4B-SST(C): rear L/C/R

Speakers
Paradigm Reference Signature S8: fronts L/R
Paradigm Reference Signature C5: front C
Paradigm Reference Signature ADP: surrounds L/R
Paradigm Reference Signature S4: rears L/R
Velodyne DD15 subwoofers (2): subwoofers L/R

Digital Sources
Oppo BDP 105 (scheduled for purchase to replace BDP-83)
Bryston BDP-2 Digital Player (scheduled for purchase)
Bryston BDA-2 D/A Converter (scheduled for purchase)

Thanks very much. I truly appreciate your expertise and advice.

is this a brand-new system? No pre-pro yet? Or are you replacing a previous pre-pro with a new model?
Thanks for the reply, WestCoastD

I'm using the pre-pro section of a Denon receiver right now. I've had high-end two-channel preamps in the past but the pre-pro will be new to the system.

The other gear was purchased in 2005-2006.
