Marantz AV8801 Preamp/Processor Official Owner's thread - Page 87

Sorry, byt in the Harmony software, I am not seeing the above options;

When I go into the "Devices" tab, I select the "Settings" option for the AV Receiver, and I select "Adjust power settings", but my options are

*I want to leave this device on all the time
*I want to turn off this device when its not in use
*There are no power buttons on my current remote for my Marantz AV8801 AV Reveiver

Which do I need to select? The middle one; "I want to turn off this device..."?

I think I put there were no power buttons on my current remote. That way the input will power it on without the zones coming on....

I did it several weeks ago, but it hasn't been an issue since I did a little trial and error.

The only issue I'm currently having is no audio when starting a blu-ray on the oppo 103. This happened again last night with Flight. I need to swap HDMI cables and see if that has something to do with it. I always have audio with the other sources at startup. When I had no audio last night, I used the oppo Audio command to use one of the other formats (I think it was dolby digital) and the audio came through. Switched back to DTS HD-MA and still no audio. Turning the 8801 off (standby) and back on immediately resumes the lossless audio. Everytime. This doesn't happen every time...but its been a more than a handful.

Anyone else experiencing this? Its my last bug and then I can chill!

Yep I have a similar issue. Also with an Oppo (93 for me). But this never happened with the Integra 80.2. So the Marantz must have some handshaking issues.

I will try that.

I have an Oppo BDP93, I will see if I experience this as well.

Have you tried contacting Oppo?

Given that the issue never happened with an Integra 80.2 even once in a couple of years of ownership, I think the fault lies with the Marantz.

I did the Marantz FW update (although I probably did not need to), and fired up the system with the Harmony One.

It turned everything on, and theres no handshake issue with my Oppo 93. Zones 2, 3 and 4 appear to not power on.

When I power down the system, zones 2, 3 and 4 remain off, BUT, the 8801 stays on!



This will not work......

If the Marantz turns it off then it has to be the Harmony one programming.

When I was reprogramming my Harmony One, it seems that I has to teach one of the commands from the Marantz remote.

Did it work right before the firmware update?

Did you have to rerun audyssey after the update?

Today I couldn't log in to the web interface of the AV8801. It displayed "installer locked". As I did a "save" of all my settings yesterday, I did a complete reset. Now I could get into the web interface again, and I tried a 'Load'. To my disappointment this didn't work. I get the following error: Load Not Completed. The version of config.dat is different. Please check your config.dat.
I don't understand how the version of the Config.dat can be different, as I did the save after the firmware upgrade.
Anyone any ideas?

I tried to 'load' a config.dat that I had just saved 10 min. ago. No luck! Now I get : Load Not Completed. Please retry again .

I'm having handshake issues. Every so often, I'm losing all video (don't know about audio), but still can pull up the setup OSD, when I switch hdmi inputs, just not the status command OSD. I'm getting another 8801 to test. I will update my situation. The only thing that brings back output is unplugging then plugging it back in. Here are my HDMI sources;

Update #1:
Mv 2nd experimental 8801 will be here tomorrow. Gives me from Thursday till Monday to decide if this issue is firmware or what by having two on deck.

I was getting this installer locked message. I noticed that I was trying to log in from my computer while my iPad was still logged in. Once I made sure both were logged out before trying again, it worked. Some time went by though after I logged out of both before trying to log in again, though, so that MAY not have been the cause or solution.

MM8077 amp interesting thermal design

this amp has two large heat sinks 4 inch diameter mounted in series horizontally behind the front panel: there are 3 fans: one in the center and one on each end: the air is pushed out the right side when the fans run...you can hear a faint click when the fans kick in: hours after turn on in a 70f equipment closet

at low loads, the fans do not run and the heat sink is convection cooled: the top gets warm

very active thermal management: as a track ends, you can hear the fans running...then they quickly shut off...it also modulates fan speed quite effectively: nice thermal management...

Well, I may have an issue with my new AV8801. mad.gif Then again, being a "separates noob," it could be me. wink.gif

After hooking up the AV8801/MM8803 and just my speakers and FM antenna, I turned everything on. I had a loud hum coming from my subwoofer.

After trying some suggestions that I found online--trying a new sub cable, different AC outlets, etc., and the problem not going away---I finally have everything unplugged but the AV8801 and the sub, with one HDMI cable from the AV8801 to the TV for the setup menu and one sub cable (RCA) from the sub to the AV8801. The MM8803 is unplugged and totally out of the loop.

When I then turn the AV8801 on and then the sub, the hum from the sub comes up right away. Funny thing--if I unplug the HDMI cable from the AV8801 to the TV, the hum in the sub goes away. Wonder what's with that? rolleyes.gif

I then tried the same setup with my old AVR4311--cable to sub from the AVR4311 and HDMI cable from the TV to the monitor out on the AV4311. No hum. Whisper quiet from the sub.

Am I looking at getting a replacement AV8801? Any other things I could look at?


Also, the Setup menu sometimes does not want to come up on the TV. I did a reset of the AV8801 and it came back but sometimes after that it's darn near impossible to bring it back up.

It your TV is connected to a cable box.
Try disconnecting the cable and see if that helps.

You could also try connecting the ground on the 8801 to the wall socket screw to ground it.

Every new unit will have issues, but D&M seems to be on top of the major issues. None of the issues so far can't be resolved by a firmware update so my answer would be 'yes'

My March 2013 issue of Stereophile Magazine with the review of the Marantz AV 8801 by Kal Rubinson arrived today. Part of his closing paragraph: "Overall, the Marantz AV 8801 is the best-sounding preamplifier-processor I have heard at or below its price."

Saving & loading work for me actually. Mine is 726KB large. Check the size. I would hate to lose a perfectly good xt32 8pt measurement as well...

I agree it's the best I've heard in it's price range. No question about it. Although some have compared it to the Onkyo/Integra and Denon and claim it's close but I haven't compared myself.

I did not rerun Audessy. I am guessing the power issue it is because I selected something like "no power button", or whatever it was described above on this page.

I think I remember now what I did. Teach the harmony the on and off buttons....for power on do something meaningless like "enter", then when it selects the input it will power on without the zones. Then for power off just use the regular power toggle button on the remote. Sorry about the misinformation before.

Yes it fits perfectly. The correct rack mount kit for the AV8801 was verified with Marantz prior to my order.

I'm a Harmony newb and I just picked up a Harmony 900. I've got an activity called "Watch a Movie" which selects the Blu-ray input and uses HDMI audio. Can anyone help me program it so when I run an activity I call "Listen to BDP", it selects the Blu-ray input, but switches the audio to the Analog inputs so I can use the DACs in my Oppo BDP-105? I've seen codes for this kind of thing, but I have no idea what to do with them!

Well, you could make an activity called listen to BDP , switching to an input such as CD, assigning the correct analog input to it, cycle "input mode" till It says analog. It should remember the input mode. Try that. Or you could just teach the harmony the "input mode" command from another marantz AV/AVR and cycle through while in "watch a movie", to achieve what you want. I hope I'm clear. It's late & I'm on my cell phone typing this.
