Marantz AV8801 Preamp/Processor Official Owner's thread - Page 204

Many BD's are DTS HD master audio which is amazing on the 8801 and my preferred way of listening. I heard glass shattering from a scene in Skyfall I believe, breaking in mid air as if it was one of the windows in my living room it was so real. I have the 8801 set so it does the native audio from the movie which is the way it was meant to be heard. Music is a different story, the multi ch stereo is really great smile.gif

I like NEO for adding channels - I am using it in a 9.1 configuration with heights.
Stereo sources - I guess I am old school - I don't like deriving additional channels - I will run just Audyssey stereo or Pure Direct. I do kinda like all channels stereo for some music but imaging goes all over the place.

I'm thinking of getting an AV8801. I was wondering what people think of the quality using the AV8801 to stream from their NAS? I currently stream WAV files from my Sonos via Empirical Audio Syncro Mesh. Would streaming directly from the AV8801 replace my Sonos?

To be honest I haven't tried it - I use a Logitech Squeezebox Touch which does this very well - connected to the AV8801 via digital coax doesn't lose any sound quality.

Anyone?

Have you tried doing Height with a DTS Master soundtrack? Those results with a 9 speaker configuration are terrific. smile.gif

The 8801 does have a secondary memory, but it's intended as a backup. You can't use it to switch between two different settings. See page 108 of the owner's manual.

However, you can use the 8801's Web interface to save and restore the 8801's internal state to a file on a computer. You can rename that file each time you do a save to have multiple versions. See page 106 and item 17 on page 107.

It looks like I can do that and accomplish what I want. Thanks for the info.

It is hard to do hi res sound( 24 bit 96khz) From a Squeeze Touch. If the 8801 could receive such PCM files from a DLNA server (e.g. JR River) that would be great.

Can it?

I do hi-res sound (24/96) from the Squeezebox Touch and it works great.

It can also take them from Jriver

Having four remotes sitting on my table is just not that big of a deal, whereas killing hours and hours (not to mention money - Logitech's latest is $350) trying to make things work right is painful.

I'm sure that many will disagree - I would've not that long ago.

For me just having the clutter drives me nuts, and at the end of the day the time spend was well worth it, my iRule setup trumps anything I have used or seen to date:

The iRule app works well for all your devices?

I have an 8801 and an Opp 105. Is it possible to connect the analog outs of the 105 for pure music and the HDMI for movies? If so, which input would I select on the remote for the multi-channel analog signal? Right now I'm using HDMI for everything (in the Pure Direct mode), which sounds fine, but I understand that some people prefer the analog outs of the 105.

Does anyone know if there is a custom Middle Atlantic faceplate/shelf for the AV8801 or MM8077?  I didn't see them in the MA database.  Is there an older model that is the exact same size?  If not, will MA make it if requested?

Thanks,

Nick

It is possible and I have done it with my pronto using the IR codes but I do know how you could do it with other remotes,
What remote are you doing?

The one that came with the Marantz. There doesn't seem to be a "multi-in" button--or words to that effect!

What mode is best for matrixing a 7.1 soundfield from a 5.1 source.? I have only ever used my Lexicon's Logic7.

When I am listening to a Blu-ray that was produced with a native (discrete) 7.1 audio track should I use a different listening mode from above, or, will the AV8801 select it for me automatically?

curious your take now that you own one David?!!

So what is the latest Marantz 8801 update all about?
Does it really take 43 minutes?

Thus far yes, I have the Panny projector, SMS-1 and the 8801 all hooked up via rs-232.

The PS3 is done via infra red blaster directly into the Logitech add on that is used typically for their remotes.

Took a bit to get the coding right, but much like all the others out there, once you have the basics it all kinda adds up.

In post #1 of this thread is a list of what is contained in the three updates. My updates have all gone the full 43 minutes, give or take a couple of minutes.

I have the 8801 and 105 and I only use the 105 balanced outs to the 8801 for analog, all else for multi/ch I use hdmi and prefer it for many reasons the strongest of those being Audyssey for multi ch sacd sent to the 8801 via Bitstream from the 105 which I have set to DSD ( try it and hear why) As for the analog outs assign them to the "CD" input ( speaking xlr here) you are using the rca outs you can configure them on the Bluray input or any other you choose as you can set that particular input to digital or analog and from there use the movie mode button on the remote by holding it down to scroll through the modes until it says multi ch input.

The simple and best sounding way to me is as follows.

1.) Oppo 105 xlr or rca to the Cd input for stereo playback of cd's usb and 2/ch sacd I leave this one in Pure direct as the 8801 remembers the settings and all I need do is hit CD on the remote.

2.) Hdmi 2 from the 105 set to bitsream and DSD for the Audio settings while using the the split a/v mode to the 8801's bluray input, here you will still look for multi/ch on the display using the movie button as described above for DSD 5.1 tracks you can still select stereo or dpl II dts neo etc.. and also pure direct for multi ch. This will also cover your movies as the Dolby True HD or DTS Master HD logos light up . You can then use the hdmi 1 from the 105 direct to your display .

Happy listing and enjoy this killer combo wink.gif

Do you have sound coming out of the heights if you select speaker level in the 8801 menu? In the 8801 menu inputs>input select> if you set both input and decode mode to auto the 8801 will play what your source is putting out automatically. I'd try that first.

Are you set to DSD in your player?
