General Precision Laboratories Iconoscope?

I spent hours trying to determine what this device was today, I believe it was used in the 1950's for producing TV shows onto theatre screens, rather fed with the coaxial VIDEO input on front, if somebody could explain what this instrument was used for video wise I would be greatful
