Official OPPO BDP-103 Owner's Thread - Page 173

I tried DLNA to play mkv files on my network. It sees the file and starts playing it but suddenly stops after playing few minutes (Not sure if it crashed and restarted or just can't play it). It always stops at the same point. My computer (windows media player, VLC player) has no problem playing the file.1.gif

I must say how impressed I am with the Oppo. My first impression was the first class packaging, and, the cool carrying bag/cover. The Oppo itself is absolutely gorgeous. The operation and user interface is second to none. The performance had me watching all the blu-rays I could get my hands on today!

I have a question though...

My Lexicon is non-HDMI. I have a single HDMI cable ran to my projector. I am using the HDMI 1 out of the Oppo directly to my projector. I would still like to keep the PS3 in my system for my sons as they use it for gaming. I connected the PS3 HDMI out to the HDMI in on the back of the Oppo with the intention to use the Oppo as a switcher; toggling between the Oppo and the PS3 to my projector via my single HDMI cable. Is this OK?

The connection seemed to work perfectly as the PS3 home screen appeared. However, when my son put in a PS3 game disc, the projector went to a blank screen with a "no video signal" notation. It also froze-up the Oppo causing me to have to power off/on to un-freeze the Oppo.

Out of curiosity I then tried the Netflix interface on the PS3, again feeding the HDMI input on the rear of the Oppo, and it worked perfectly. I had perfect video and audio with no blank screens and no locking-up of the Oppo.

Why am I unable to play a PS3 game disc, but, able to use the PS3 netflix interface? Is there a video setting I need to change, or, is playing a game in this configuration not possible?

Thanks for any help. I searched this thread, but, was unable to find an answer.

Using HDMI input from the PS3 for game play should work. I suspect you had a type of HDMI handshake failure that OPPO is working to fix in the next firmware release -- a failure of the Copy Protection check. If it happens again, see if you can use the Input button on the OPPO remote to switch the OPPO back to Blu-ray Player, then select the HDMI Input again. That will force a new HDMI handshake and may clear the problem.

That said, I would not recommend using the PS3 through the OPPO for game play. The PS3 games are authored to use video in the RGB video data format flavor which OPPO calls RGB PC Level, but there is currently no way to configure the HDMI Input on the OPPO as to whether RGB format input should be treated as RGB Video Level (the default) or RGB PC Level. In addition, there is currently a bug which results in incorrect "color space math" if RGB input comes in at HD resolutions.

For movie playback on the PS3 (including Netflix), the PS3 uses YCbCr 4:4:4 output by default, and that works without problems through the OPPO input. Although you can set movie output on the PS3 to either format, game output typically "forces" the PS3 to RGB output.

Hi Oppo fans

New to the site so please go easy if this question has been asked before.....
I'm about to take delivery of an Oppo 103. I predominately bought it because i could combine it's excellent blu ray playback with the best digital playback of my music.
At present i'm using iTunes through a first gen Apple tv. Handy because of the HD attached. I've recently downloaded some HD tracks and then found out my 1st gen Apple tv won't play them unless i convert them to a lesser bitrate . Disappointed to say the least. My current setup is Bang and Olufsen. I have a BV7-40 (main system) connected to a pair of Beolab 5's. The Oppo will HDMI straight into the BV7 .......

Questions are.....

I'm looking to stream from my desktop to the Oppo so what is the best for syncing with the Oppo for HD music playback? I have noticed people talking about J River and Monkey Media. How do they compare with iTunes?
Can i plug an external HD into the Oppo for music playback? Will that sound better than streaming?
How is the interface on the Oppo for navigating around music files. ie - Cover art....

My main aim is to feed the Oppo with the best HD music for playback. Tks for your time.

What audio format/container format are these 'HD' tracks?

They are in FLAC SMD

I strongly doubt it is a setup issue or a 'defective player' issue since so many other people have reported it. My guess is that very few people actually use it this way; most use a dedicated preamp or use one of the the digital outputs from the player (HDMI, optical or coax).

Yes, still have the issue. Oppo still says they are unable to duplicate the issue in their testing and still point to my setup despite the 83 working perfectly with 100% the same setup (I just unplugged the cables from the 83 and plugged them into the 103). frown.gif However I managed to fix my broken pre/pro so I am connected with digital now and, sadly, not going to use any of the analog features of the player (digital has its own issues with audio sometimes not locking etc and also sometimes the player just locks up and the only way to fix is unplugging it).

The BDP-83 was such a workhorse and I NEVER had issues with it so I am very surprised at all these issues on the 103 - the HDMI audio lock was always instant on the 83 and I never had dropouts as I do occasionally on the 103. I hope they can fix it over time but I have a feeling the hiss is not fixable via firmware. I have had a few components over the years with hisses or hums and it was never firmware it was always something hardware. The percentage of people that hook their 103 direct to their amp is probably so tiny that its not worth major effort on Oppo's side. Most people that would do this probably just buy the 105.

Nice one... I've not had any problems playing any of my 2Ch and 6Ch FLAC audio files via the Oppo.
So far I've tried: 44.1KHz/16-bit, 48.0KHz/16-bit, 88.1KHz/16-bit, 88.1KHz/24-bit, 96.0KHz/16-bit, 96.0KHz/24-bit and 192.0KHz/24-bit wink.gif

Welcome to AVSForum.

As a sanity check, copy one of these files to local storage (like a thumb drive or USB hard drive) and verify that the OPPO plays it correctly without DLNA.

If that's good, try a different DLNA server. Windows Media Player is not the favorite choice around here. The FAQ linked in my signature has a list of servers people have reported using.

My Netflix menu looks like it is not centered and the movie "covers" extend to the left of the screen. The movie descriptions are displayed on the right and seem to "push" the picture to the left off the screen. Very different from the Apple TV Netflix application. Is this the only way to display Netflix off the Oppo or do I have some hidden option set-up incorrectly?

Complain to Netflix, its the way they designed their scrolling UI.

Yes...

All my media files are stored on an Synology 212+ NAS and passed over a 10/100Mbps network.

Still, you’ll occasionally hear this gripe: “Over at [other places where such things are reviewed], they say I should buy the Panasonic DMP-BDT220, and it’s less than $100! Why should I spend five times that much?” These are folks who’ve never owned an Oppo. Once you have owned an Oppo and experienced its flawless accuracy, owning and using one will make you feel you’ve done yourself a favor. And once you’ve called Oppo’s technical support line to ask for help, you’ll find out that the quality of the people at the other end of the line speaks volumes about the company’s core values. For example: When a customer needs help, you help them. Period. You will never hear, “We can’t help you. It must be the fault of your receiver.

Is the Oppo hooked up through your AVR or is the sound coming out of your TV speakers?

I have found I only get the delay when I have higher bit sound going to the TV speakers. So now if I am using the TV speakers, I just drop down the audio quality from the source or if I want the sound quality then I disable the TV speakers and run the sound through my AVR system and no more delay. Or at least none that I have noticed

To be honest I don't understand what the culprit is.. Maybe it is an handshaking issue or the TV just takes a while being able to downmix the audio.

Every thing is connected via HDMI 1 to the AVR,the only delay I've experienced is with total recall.
The rest BD work perfectly, I will try a couple of BD to know for sure if it's from the player or just total recall.
I have the Japanese version of the movie cuz the U.S release has sound delays, but it yurns out even the Japanese version has it.
I have to correct my previous post.

The Oppo can not mount .iso files but it can read all directories on a server via DLNA - applies to Windows Server 2012. Without any log in. Pismo software or anything else is also not necessary.

My Ethernet problem is also solved. The 103 had a hick up regarding the Ethernet interface. Works nice now. Switched back from WiFi to Ethernet and it worked.

I've also tested the up-scaling capabilities and they are also par. Wouldn't there be this sound difference, I would sell my Denon. But because I like the Denon more, I will keep it.

The Oppo 103 is in my understanding an excellent Blu-Ray Player with many features, I missed with other players. I will definitely keep it.

Oh, ok, never-mind. it sounded like from your original post that you were seeing this on everything. BTW, I have HDMI 1 connected directly to the TV and HDMI 2 going through my AVR.

I would like to replace my Boxee Box, which is mostly used to stream Bluray MKV rips, with an Oppo 103. If I attach a USB drive to the Oppo, can I access the drive from my networked Mac running OS X 10.8.2?

No. Storage attached to the OPPO is not on the network.

Thanks for the quick reply. I guess I'll just stream from the Mac using Playback DLNA. Just curious, has anyone tried streaming 3D Bluray rips with the Oppo?

I just tried my 103 with an Emotiva amp (300 WPC) yesterday. Same hiss problem, but at lower levels, since the input sensitivity of the Emotiva is much higher.

But the hiss was still too loud and not something I could deal with.

Oppo said the same thing to me regarding duplication and that it might be an incompatibility problem with the particular amp I used yesterday. Phooey. I'm with you; they probably have a trickle of complaints about this and it's not worth their time. 99.9% of users probably go digital or use the analog outs to a preamp or AVR.

Some recommended an attenuator but that would drive the volume too low. We had it at 95% Oppo player volume yesterday so even a 3 db attenuator would make it too quiet.

I'm sending my player back because I don't want to drag this out past the 30-day return window. Maybe some day I'll get another Oppo but for know I'll limp along with my Panny.

Are you in North America and is this a normal region A player? Does it have a region-free hardware mod?

If the "Connection Test" in Setup works but you are consistently unable to connect to the firmware update server, then I would suspect the hardware mod is interfering.

Could you contact whoever did the modification and ask them what they know about this?

You can download firmware to USB or optical disc and update that way, but I wonder if this would conflict with the operation of the mod chip?

Bob- Thanks for the information. I will look into another approach to keep the PS3 in my system. Also, thanks for taking the time to share your product knowledge with this forum. Your posts have been most informative.
