While viewing 5.1 content from your Dish box, press the Info button on the 103's remote (upper right of the Arrow buttons) and the OPPO's on-screen Info display will show you exactly what is coming in as the audio input format. If that's not 5.1 then there's a setting in your Dish that is incorrect. Typically the setting will let you choose whether digital audio output is LPCM or Bitstream (which may be identified as Dolby Digital). It is the Bitstream (or Dolby Digital) choice that you want. It is quite possible that the Dish box has separate settings for HDMI digital audio output and Optical digital audio output.

The LPCM setting from such boxes will typically force a stereo down-mix -- intended for direct connection to TVs that don't know how to handle 5.1 input.

Thanks for the answer above and for filling me in on where the info button is on the 103 remote. And yes it is getting 5.1 from my hdmi inputs, it is just getting the balance right on what volume control to use , whether to use the 103 volume control or the av receivers volume control. But what I found was that it is better to use the AV receivers volume control as I get more control over sound out put at a lower volume out put from the amp.

As when i was using the 103 volume control i would end up turn my amp out put to a high volume level so i would have a better range of volume from the 103 , but when you turn the volume down on the 103 the amp was still is at high out put so the volume would go down but then you could notice the static noise over your surround speakers because the volume was turn up so high on the amp .

it all a learning curve and thanks for your help

Thanks again,
GPC

1) The player's YouTube app won't remember that it has synched with my YouTube account and asks me to activate it every time. A quick search of this thread highlighted that this was a problem with previous beta firmwares, but the player updated itself to the latest firmware (BDP10X-38-1220) two days ago. Is this still a lingering issue that Oppo needs to sort out?

2) Is there a simpler way to navigate my playlists within the YouTube app than trying to use the arrow keys to skip through every video in sequential order? I have 50+ videos in my 'Favorites' list and given the laggy-ness of the controls response from the remote, this is pretty tedious.
1)YouTube sign in is still an ongoing problem.

2)While you are playing a video in a playlist, you do not have to skip through each individual video. You can use the arrows (to clarify this I mean the left/right arrows and not the next/previous buttons) to scroll through a list of all videos in a playlist & hit enter to play the video you want. This is not the controls you access after pressing the down arrow; you do not need to use those. Maybe this is what you said you are already doing? I do not find it slow/laggy when doing this.

I have the Matroska codec on my computer. I play the files via Media Player Classic Home Cinema (part of the CCCP codec pack). The files all show up in the Windows Media Player playlist, so WMP can see them. I am having the BDP-103 pull the files from the network like a DMP, not trying to push the files from WMP to the BDP-103 (via PlayTo) like a DMR. Thus, the codec on the computer ought not to matter as long as the BDP-103 can render the file. As noted, I can play an .mkv from a USB thumb drive, but the files are somehow not showing up over the network while all the other files are.

What are the recommendations for a simple DLNA media server for Win7 other than WMP?

I think we've seen this issue reported before with WMP and MKV files.

Check out oShare as a simple DNLA server.

The FAQ has a list of what people have reported using: What are some DLNA servers?

oShare is simple (and free). People usually report quick results with Twonky.

I thinking of buying the Oppo BDP-103 to replace my Sony BDP-S790. I currently have the Pioneer VSX-1120 receiver. I have a few questions on the Oppo BDP-103.

1. I really don't like the BDP-S790 audio dac for cd audio, because its sounds like a $100 cd player. I would like to know how good is the sound quality from the Oppo's dac for cd audio?
2. Are there any lip-sync issues with the Oppo when connecting it a Pioneer receiver?
3. Do you think that I should still keep my Sony BDP-S790 and buy a dedicated CD player such as the Marantz CD5004?

I went into my Denon and cut AV sync off, and then set the Audio Delay in the Denon to 75ms. Watching some HDTV right now from Dish Network and it looks like its spot on, when watching people's mouths. Thanks for the input.

I had a feeling HDMI 2 might be a little ahead of HDMI 1 just due to the Marvell doing some processing.

The manual has recommended settings for audio for many configurations.

See the FAQ for some other things: What are the recommended settings for the OPPO BDP-103?

I'm confused with all the choices of region-free modification kits for the BDP103/105 for DVDs and Blurays. The FAQ seems to list those that work internal to the player. Do they make some that you can only connect externally and not have to open up the player to do so? My 105 is deep inside the rack and the thought of removing this heavy thing from the rack, remove its cover, remove the MCH analog board to get access to some connector isn;t appealing at all ...

Anyone?

Had a problem playing the "Ted" bluray today. Had it on pause for awhile (maybe 30 mins). The oppo screensaver was on, I hit play and the screen saver went away but it was stuck on the paused scene. Nothing on the remote did anything. I had to hit the power button on the unit for it to restart. Then when it restarted and I skipped thru the coming attractions, it came to where the menu options would be but none of the menu items (play, aubtitles, extras... ) on the left side of the screen were visible. It just kept cycling thru the video that plays behind the options. Any key hit would give the red circle with slash. I could hit the power button on the remote and then it played ok after that,

I tried to reproduce the screensaver problem, but after the Oppos screensaver went away , the universal movie screen saver was then active. I then hit enter and the movie resumed. Maybe if I left it paused longer then I might have seen the error again? This time it was only 5 minutes or so.

Don't know if this is speciic to "Ted"? I'm thinking the universal screensave and oppo screensaver didn't like each other after a long pause? The missing menu was really weird though.

It's specific to Universal Studios Blu-rays. Check out the FAQ that's linked in the first post of this thread.

Anyone?

There is an external adaptor - it's the one from imeg on ebay (where I got mine) and Only Best
Rated in Canada. It looks like they're the same unit.

To use it externally, it plugs into the R232 port and USB port on the rear of the machine. It works
fine on my 103, and I also had the version for the 93 and that worked well from soon after the machine
came out, and is still working fine.

Only caveat - the current ad on ebay for the imeg store doesn't specifically say 'external', so you might
email before buying, just to make sure it's still the same unit I got a couple of months ago.

Is there a "Master reset" for the 103?

I was messing around in setup and set Deep Color to something other than "Off", and my screen blanked out/no way to get the display back to back out of the setting? Thrilling stuff...

I was able to pop in a BD and play/see it, but the 103 top menu is still "gone" and the players own display doesn't tell me whats going on there to be able to figure out how to undo things.

Can you utilize the other HDMI out to your display to access the system menu again? Deep color can be set individually for HDMI one or two etc.

Cheers

For this very reason the player has a DIAG (Diagnostic) video output plug that you can connect to your Tv using a plain composite video cable...

The problem is not Ted but rather the Universal Screensaver. If the Pause / Play buttons don't resume the video, then try pressing the Red button on the Oppo's remote. Don't ask me why, but it seems to work...

Not an option for me as my equipment is in a closet and my only output to the TV is a single HDMI...

if all else fails I guess I can pull it out and carry it to the TV; what a PITA; at least the PS3 will revert automatically if the user doesn't confirm (because they can actually "SEE" the result after the change...)

Not sure I can do this since my current setup is to send "Blank HDMI 2" out; I'll go see if there's a way to make this work...

Regarding lyp sync/audio sync: I was watching my first BD and in the middle of the movie (1.5 hours in) the lip sync started to delay. The Oppo is using HDMI 1 into the AVR, LPCM/Bitstream. Now everything I play is out of sync, BD and DVD. I also tried HDMI 2, no luck. Split display as well.

Both HDMI outputs do not have a lyp sync issue when connected directly to the TV. I also tried different HDMI ports on the AVR, and three different HDMI cables. There is no lyp sync issue with my other BD or HD DVD players. The AVR is an Onkyo SR806. So basically the audio is out of sync only when going through HDMI to the AVR.

Any ideas? I'm stumped. And annoyed.

Anyone experiencing audio drops with the 103 (using the Marantz 8801) via HDMI? I was watching Monsters Inc 3D (True HD 7.1) and had several drops, and a few weeks back, during The Dark Knight Rises, lost audio completely, requiring a reboot of the 103.

Bitstreaming, HDMI 1, to the 8801.

this should work:

press setup on the remote
up arrow x 3
enter
up arrow x 1
enter
down arrow x1
enter

This should complete a reset to defaults.

Bitstreaming, HDMI 1, to the 8801.

Probably the same issue as previously reported on a number of titles with 7.1 THD and seamless branching navigation. this is not unique to Oppo players.
Setting the player to output PCM is a work-around.
