Speaking of "AVS HD709" I burned a copy on a DVD-R disk that played fine on my 93, but will not on my 103. Doesn't recognize the disk.

Put the BDMV folder on a USB stick and it will play that way. The burned-disc based method of playback is no longer supported.

I'll put that in the FAQ: BDMV folders on DVD is not longer supported. (That was at the instruction of the BDA; I don't know why they care).

AVS HD 709 also comes in AVCHD format; that still works on DVD. Both work on USB devices.

For you folks in Europe, Netflix streaming may just have gone live in Sweden

Netflix just pushed out an update to their iOS app for iPhone and iPad. The only change noted is that Netflix is now available in Sweden.

For you folks getting the first BDP-103EU units in Europe, I'm still looking for confirmation that the Netflix app on it actually works in an area where Netflix streaming is available. At the moment, it appears that would be the UK, Ireland, and now Sweden.

There's no news item on the Netflix website's Blog on this, so this info may be a bit premature, but evidently it is about to happen, if it hasn't happened already.

While looking for news on this, I also spotted a Canal+ story saying that Netflix will go live in France sometime next year as well.

ETA: I should point out that when Netflix turned on streaming for Canada, OPPO had to badger them a bit before their servers recognized the validity of the app on the OPPO players. I'm hopeful that Netflix has worked out such issues already for Europe, but if the native Netflix app does not function on the BDP-103EU, and you are in a part of Europe where Netflix streaming is supposed to be live, be sure to let OPPO UK know so they can have Netflix give the appropriate server a swift kick.

Just curious, how does the 83 it compare to the Denon DBP-2012UDCI which also uses the Anchor Bay?

Even thou I have have a 83 and 93, I'm a bit hesitant to switch over since you mentioned the 83's de-interlacing is better than the 93 and 103. Sort of leaves me a bit stumped if I want to a DBP-2012UDCI because of AnchorBay or a 103.

I don't think the 83 is better than the 103. If I had to rank the performance I would go 103>83>93 when considering de-interlacing and 103>93>83 considering scaling. The 103 is simply awesome and combines the best traits of the 83 (de-interlacing) and 93 (scaling). It also helps that none of them are poor and we are comparing great players when discussing the 83,93, and 103.

Did you compared 83 to 103? I still think that 83 is better when compared.

Ok I see. How about not considering scaling, would the rank be? Most of my stuff I watch is blu-ray so it isn't really scaling to my Sony XBR 5 set.

No, I sold my 83 when the 93 arrived. I was, however, also able to pull my DVDO Edge off the shelf and compare the ABT de-interlacing to the93 and 103. Both the Edge and103 are excellent, IMHO.
If all you watch is 1080p24 Blu Ray movies the differences between current (2012) players will be quite minor with "real world" content.

Suggestion on best place to purchase the cable which can connectthe OPPO BDP 103 to an existing IR distribution system. I looked at monoprice but they were oos.

Your local Radio Shack, or You-Do-It Electronics in Needham will have what you need.

I think what people are getting to is something that has been posted over and over on this thread. Cineva protection will only stop play if the disc itself has cineva protection on it and so far few discs have it (and they are all Sony) and no older discs have it. But since you mention feb 2012, I'm guessing your combining this issue with the nonrelated iso issue. But if it works on your sony it must not be an iso issue so it really just depends on how your system is set up.

It's the same question you'll ask in 10 years about the Blu-ray disc as the studios figure another way to get you to buy the same movie for the 8th time!

I would agree, probably subtle. More like when I went from 83 and got the 93, I able able to detect differences in how fluid the video looked which was subtle. The 83 looked very fluid in comparison to the 93 which wasn't quite was much. I'm not sure of the terminology of what I was seeing but I was able to notice it. Maybe the 103 can close the gap of the differences that I noticed between 83 and 93 in terms of this fluidness.

Yes, they will all play. However, any titles that are encoded with Cinavia (Sony) will stop playing after 10-20 min if you are using BDMV folders or mounting an ISO on a network share.

I am wondering where are you buying bdp-103. The oppo website seems to be obsolete and is still talking about taking preorders for shipping in Oct.

The 103 is still in limited distribution in the US only. Just sign up on the interest list at their web site and you will get an email when a unit is available. If your timing is good, you may get the email almost immediately.

Happens constantly with Californication Season 1 Disc 1 almost every single time I rewind, fw. I'm assuming the best idea is to turn off 24p for it. Since it was originally showtime it is probably 60 frames anyway.

BTW the speed performance alone is well worth the upgrade which ended up being $100 after selling my previous 93. It feels like DVD speeds now when playing blu-ray titles.

I play video based tv shows on my Panasonic 220 all the time and it will play at 60 or 24 without any trouble, the more I read the more I don't think the OPPO 103 is for me. Too many firmware updates, too delicate about playing DVDs or Blu Rays.

The one thing I missed earlier from your post is that you opened the tray then hit play to resume playback. I can get my 103 to resume after ejecting the disc as well. The issue is that if the Home Menu is on any icon other than the disc icon playback will not resume after the disc is stopped. I have to change the home menu to the disc icon to get playback to resume after hitting play. I just tried it again with Auto Play enabled and my display on and it is the same. I also tried it with the Home Menu on different icons and it is the same. I feel that if the Home Menu is on say the setup icon and you push play with a disc in the player the icon should automatically change to the disc icon. I will contact Oppo today about this issue.

That's because its not doing a true reverse telecine process. What the Panasonic is doing is simply dropping frames without regard to whether its the right frame to drop. Oppo does a reverse telecine process.

Then you are missing out on the best player in the market. You are trying to compare a "value bluray player" @ $100 vs a quality built bluray+media player+more. Besides the fact that Oppo has real support and a 2 yr warranty. There's a reason why they've won so many awards. I'm not going to even go into drawing comparisons or why your thinking is flawed.

You are the guy that wants the absolute perfect player right? You already have 3 bluray players including what you said was a BDP-95 you plan to return? Sony S790 and Panasonic 220? Also you mentioned you will NEVER do a firmware update? Really? You do realize that every single bluray player *NEEDS* firmware updates in order for some new released title compatibilities right? That being said there are some that went without updating their Oppos and were fine. I don't get it... You are obviously on the internet doing all this technology research but yet will NEVER do a firmware update?

You can look forever and even when you think you are buying the absolute perfect bluray player none are 100% perfect. Personally I am just glad that when I decided to buy my BDP-93 2 years ago I was happy with my purchase as I am with my BDP-103 and......I sold my BDP-93 for only $30 less than I paid for it... Tell me please what bluray player or disc player in history was able to be sold 2 years old out of warranty for $30 less than was paid? Oppo = Awesome

Yeah, that's the reason.

In a total coincidence I'm currently visiting my in-laws and just updated their DMP-BDT220 to firmware v1.47 yesterday. I'd suggest at least updating your firmware to v1.39 which corrects "Playability of Blu-ray Disc".

Hello all. The 103 will be my first Oppo, and it should arrive tomorrow. Really looking forward to trying it out! I've got a small stack of DVD-As to listen too, but no SACDs yet. I see that a lot of the great classic rock albums I want are hard to find and expensive it the format though. So here is my dumb question (my apologies if its been answer before): Is it true that I can download hi-rez FLAC albums (from sites like HDTracks), drag them to a thumb drive, and play them on the Oppo without have to mess with additional software on my computer (J-River, MediaMonkey, etc)?

^ Yes. Format the thumb drive as either FAT or NTFS on your computer (it may already be formatted that way), load the files onto it, move the thumb drive to the OPPO 103, and access the music files through the Music icon on Home Menu.
