I think I remember that there is a setup change in the OPPO that will fix your problem. Maybe there is something in the FAQ about it, or check with Bob Pariseau.

I believe the setup change was to change the output to LPCM. if a device downstream was receiving bitstream data that it couldn't handle, then screeching noises would result from this incompatibility, if i'm not mistaken.

Hi,

I would like to know if the BDP-103 can play 3D MKV files with 3D subtitles through streaming or through usb or through a DVD holding the mkv file and sub file.

This the Oppo player I was looking forward to buy, but I wonder if what I say above is possible.

Gracenote info comes up automatically as long as it's selected in the Setup Menu.

Here's a strange problem. I have an SACD disk that has 13 tracks. Tracks 1-7 are music tracks. Tracks 8-13 test a surround system. Track 8 tests the left speaker. Track 9 tests the center speaker etc, etc. The Oppo 103 DOES NOT recognize tracks 8-13. The Oppo says there are only 7 tracks on the SACD. All my other SACD players recognize ALL 13 tracks. Any ideas why the Oppo doesn't recognize all the tracks?

Check to make sure you are playing the 5.1 layer from this SACD disc.

You can use the Audio button on the remote to switch between the Stereo and 5.1 layers. The music playback screen will tell you which is playing.

In the Setup menu you can specify which layer plays by default.

Any idea if Amazon Instant Video will ever be added to the app suite?

Buy a Roku streaming stick from oppo.

I agree. I have a single in-wall 40 ft. HDMI 40 cable to my Epson 5020 projector from my Pioneer SC-61 AVR. Everything feeds into it, including my OPPO BDP-103 player. Looks and sounds great.

Thank you. That solved the problem.

I knew that was an option. I guess when buying a $500 player another $50 isn't going to be a deal-breaker. I'd like to save a little money though. Maybe I can use the Amazon App off of the TV. Although I've never tested it, I would figure the app on a player would be a better experience.

The Roku has the latest and greatest Amazon app, your TV probably does not. The main difference, apart from 5.1 audio, is the newer app has the "Watchlist" and "Recently Watched" options that are quite handy. This newer Amazon app has a lot in common with the Netflix app in terms of appearance and function. Amazon will never bother with giving Oppo an app for streaming, even much bigger companies have the same problem with Amazon.

The app would be on the new Panasonic ST60. I'd just rather leave the internet services "off" on the TV, though. I'd rather use the app on the player. I wish the MHL port was on the back of the player instead of on the front!

Hi all,

I live in Canada and have signed up for Cinema Now on my PC. I can see all the choices there but when I open up Cinema Now on my 103, the device is activated but I am unable to get any movie listings or TV shows. All I see is the "wheel" menu that says movies or TV, etc. I press ok and nothing.

I can't recall this being brought up earlier so apologies if it has been. I am running the latest official firmware. Thanks.

The disk is TELARC SACD 80541 Erich Kunzel & Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. The first track is Tchaikovsky 1812 Overture. The disk comes with a warning that the "canon shots' were recorded at a very high level. The disks recommends keeping the volume down low until a safe level can be determined by you equipment. Let me add that the canon shots will scare the heck out of you on a good system. They are scary loud. I use this track to evaluate new speakers, electronics etc. On a bad system the canon shots are still loud but sound muffled. On a good system the shots are loud but very crisp. Sorry for going off subject.

Hey all,

I know this post isn't 100% Oppo related but I wanted to let everyone know that the Spears & Munsil 2nd edition disc is now available for purchase through Oppo's website.

Just purchased it a few minutes ago. $35.97 delivered to Canada.

But doesn't also say that the disc is locked so that it does not play the test tracks after the cannon shots?  IIRC, you have to manually select those tracks.

You have a good memory. Yes, I had to manually select those tracks.

I have an issue with Amazon and Roku. It seems that on my unit, Amazon will not pass a 5.1 bitstream signal through the streaming stick. Admittedly, I may not know the correct toggle for it. With Netflicks through Roku, I set the 5.1 surround in the Roku streaming stick setting, and then I need to individually set 5.1 for each program started. But, with Amazon, I have no such choice.

As I recall, its like Netflix where you have to go into the settings for that movie and choose the 5.1, after which that setting is remembered. I'll look around for a 5.1 title and try it again. But you do also have to set the Roku for 5.1.

Edit: I was wrong, you don't need to set anything in the Amazon app, it just plays the 5.1 automatically. FWIW, its DD at 384. Works fine here.

I just ordered it also. I think I just found where to go to get the answers to all the esoteric questions I've been having. Lots of info just on their website.

BTW, the SACD disc mentioned before is TELARC #60541. 80541 is for the older stereo version without the speaker tests. (Amazon)
^ Another SACD disc with test tones is "Stay in Tune with PentaTone", SACD, also available from Amazon.

If you use that one, be aware that for SACD speaker level tests you should use tracks 43-48 as instructed in the booklet that comes with it. The identical sounding "Channel ID" tracks found earlier on that disc will offer an incorrect (too loud) LFE channel intended for ease of hearing the Subwoofer, but wrong for setting its level.

It also appears that the Subwoofer specific level test found in tracks 43-48 on that disc is authored with its own error -- +4dB too hot.

(Also note that the sample, 5.1 layer music selections on that disc are authored with ALL their bass in the main speaker channels. I.e., the output is 5.1, but the .1 channel actually has no content in it. This is pretty common on SACD discs due to the screwed up way Sony defined the .1 channel for SACD.)

Yes on the 800Diamonds what a sound :)

Kal, what is your take on the Magnepan MMG?  Are they worth it I was thinking of giving them a listen!

I only play the test tracks on that disc.  The music/performance bores me.

??? It has been a long time since I have really played with a Maggie. (http://www.stereophile.com/musicintheround/1203round)  And, while I have heard a great MCH system using 6 20.1s (2 sharply-angled as a center channel) and will never forget it, the setup issues deter me.

When I was having problems with the Cinema Now app, customer service assumed I was in Canada. Its a known issue, but not sure if the solved it for our great northern brethren.
