I am using the OPPO BD 95 feeding a Meridian 861 into Meridian 8000 speaker system. The OPPO manual states to use the analog outputs for Dolby True HD but my meridian dealer advises that to get better sound that I should purchase the Meridian 621 and use the HDMI output from the OPPO to get high resulution uncompressed audio for Dolby True HD audio and better sound. Is it worth the extra cost of the 621 or is the sound just as good going directly to the 861 using the analog outputs from the OPPO? Any opinions on this?

In principle the HD621 digital route should be a lot better than doing A/D conversion in the Meridian, but the proof is always in the pudding. Kal R. has reviewed Oppo's Meridians and the HD621 so you may be able to dig up a direct reference in one of his reviews. Look for his HD621 review and see if he compared it with an analog feed from a Universal player into the Meridian 861.

Plus you'd be doing an extra D/A in the Oppo first. I think using the 621 is the way to go. I'm using one with a G68, and its works well.

Additionally, you can sell your 95 buy the new Oppo 103, have some new features and apply the cash you saved towards your HD 621. There is no need for the Oppo 95 DAC when you go over HDMI, inless of course you use the analog stereo outs for 2 channel sources into an other preamp.

They are not right on this one. The HD621 is the way to go. It's a common set up. PM me if you need more or sourcing.

Oppo is right that you don't actually NEED the 621. But it is the preferred way as it avoids a double D/A conversion. I have been using the same config for years now and I prefer it to the analog outs. Also as someone mentioned, the Oppo 93 would have sufficed as you are not really using the superior D/A of the 95. Maybe when it is time to upgrade....
