calibration with calman5 and i1display pro help

hi all I have been trying to figure a way to calibrate my tv for a while now.

so far I see I can do it if I get a i1 display pro (retail) and calman5 basic
would I need any addiontal hardware to calibrate correctly?
my tv is a Samsung UN55D6000

I don't have too much money to hire a pro right now which is why I am trying to do it myself.

You will need something to generate the patterns.

Something like the AVS rec.709 disc which is a free download, would work as CalMAN supports a number of pattern discs.

I can be a fairly involved process, but we do as much as possible to simplify it in our product.

When you open up CalMAN it will start with the introduction workflow to the product, walk through it and read everything this will teach out about the application (maybe a 10-15 minute process).

Once you know how the application works, then you can load up the tutorial workflow. Here we hold your hand and walk you through your first calibration with quite a bit of explanation on not just the how, but the why about the changes you make to the display. We've packed a ton of help into CalMAN 5 and we are adding more all the time.

Also both here and on the spectracal forum people are almost always available to fill in the missing details.

thanks I will purchase the i1display and a calman license to try this out and will browse the spectracal forum should I need any bit of help.

I was just answering your question and not trying to be rude or a smart ass, the process is not self explanitory and takes considerable effort to learn all that is needed...some estimate it at over 100 hours of time in study and trial and error.. That is not what I call self explanitory.

I stated I wanted to calibrate my tv for first time and not trying to be a pro calibrator so does anyone wanting to calibrate their tv need 100 hours of study to get that right?? I doubt that.

I find it quite simple to calibrate with Calman 5, nothing real technical about it. You can get most of the calibration done without knowing too much, just follow the readouts on the charts. However, a lot of it depends how difficult your TV is to calibrate. I would hardly say 1000 hours, probably 20 hours to do your first gray-scale, gamut, gamma calibration (if that).

That doesn't mean you'll know everything you should know, but you can probably at least figure out a few things to improve the calibration.

The problem is: it's very easy to press a button, but it's much more difficult to know the background behind the calibration process. I have been calibrating projectors and TVs for many years, but also today I learn new things about calibration.
And as already said: it depends on your device which should be calibrated. Sometimes you need special knowledge to calibrate it, sometimes it's very easy.
