Basement wiring plan for Insteon/ISY

I have been planning a basement project for a while and now I am on to the electrical. From what I have read I plan on using ISY-994I and Insteon. (All new framing and electrical)

Here is my thinking in a effort to minimize cost.

Should I wire only one switchlinc dimmer to each light fixture(or group of light fixtures). Then in order to gain a light control at each entry I could replace one switchlinc dimmer with a Keypadlinc dimmer. So theoretically I could control 8 groups of lights from three locations using 5 switchlinc dimmers and 3 keypadlinc dimmers. Instead of using 8x3 or 16 switchlinc dimmers. This would free up some Insteon cost, some switch wall space and some switch wiring.

This Is not exactly my final plan as I would not need to control all 8 lights from all three locations. And some of the locations will have the primary switchlinc dimmer so I would not maximize my Keypadlinc.

I just want to know if this plan makes sense in theory. Is it a bad plan to limit the wiring of a home and need to count on a technology such as Insteon to make the space functional. Or is it reasonable to think that this technology or similar will be around for a long time.

All thoughts are appreciated.

If you have the opportunity to do all new wiring, what would be the reason for not doing some sort of alternative solution that can yield a much more elegant installation... free of banks of wall switches?

The only solid reason I could perhaps come up with for going this route would be that you already have a large Insteon system in place.

I don't subscribe to the constant string of updates on threads & I only visit AVSF once a week (if that). I'd love to communicate with you further on the topic, feel free to contact me via Private message or via my web site or Facebook page.

Thanks for the reply, I guess I am not familiar with my other options.

I have no Insteon at this point. I came across Insteon while trying to find a remote controlled lighting solution for my bar/pool/HT room.

My plan as it stands would have been to wire Insteon into the new basement, then slowly add some new modules throughout the home. I was planning on getting a ISY as many have suggested from the start. When I was calculating cost I realized that all switches used to control one must be replaced to control any one device. So I thought that I could wire for only one switch then use the keypadlinc's which would off primary control of one device but also secondary or tertiary control over a few others.

I was also going to setup av control with iTACH IP2IR.

I was hoping to use iRULE to control all Lighting/AV functioning.

I would love to hear about any alternative solutions(and their advantages).

Also, I would like to hear any downside or deficiencies in my current plan?

Thanks Jason
