New Setup help needed

Hi,

I'm getting a new home theater setup with a projector. I have one HDMI cable running from where the projector will be in the ceiling to the wall where I will be keeping my devices. My plan is get a surround sound receiver and plug in everything through the receiver.

What is the best low input lag receiver and projector I can get? Since the lag will be accumulated between the projector and the reciever I was wondering the input lag needs to be really low on each. Are their any receivers that just pass through the video through the HDMI port passivly? Of course, I want to get a receiver with good quality audio and a projector with good quality video.

Also, the place I'm moving into has a 6 speaker setup already installed. There are three in the front (left, right, center) and three in the back (left, right, center). What is the best way to wire a 7.1 channel receiver to 6 speakers?

What is the best projector screen to use? I was reading that some people prefer grey screens to increase contrast.

Right now I'm looking at Epson 8350 since it appears to have low input lag.

- Thanks!

I think most newer receivers have pass through capability, and I don't think most introduce any noticeable lag for gaming. You didn't mention the amount your looking to spend on these and that's something people would need to help you choose. I've been interested in upgrading to the Denon AVR-2312CI (around $520) as it's well priced and has some nice features. There are several posts in the forums regarding gaming lag on pj's. Most recievers have a 6.1 setting adding the two rear speakers into 1 rear. I would wire it this way. If you can't move the L + R rears to the sides the you could set the reciever to 5.1 (not useing the center rear) and compare it to the 6.1 setting and see what sounds best.

Receiver is usually not a problem, but you do need to pay attention to what projector you use.

Thanks for the link jnaqb. That was very helpful.

I did read in a bunch of places that the receiver can cause very bad input lag issues if you pass the HDMI cable through the receiver which is what I need to do since there is only one HDMI cable going from the wall to the projector and that will be connected to the receiver.

Has anyone tested the input lag of various receivers?

You are asking about gaming lag, correct? I couldn't find any official test listings online. Narrow down your receiver search, and do some research on specific ones, with respect to the source your gaming with, ie. xbox, ps3, etc. If the receiver has pass through that can be set to do no video processing, you should be fine, but check for any results posted online with the device your planning to use. Also most consoles have the option to split the audio out separately which could be an option as well, if equipment locations permits. That would help alleviate any video lag through the avr. You would just need to use a hdmi switch, to bypass the avr, when using the console. As Mike from AVS noted, the receiver usually isn't a big contributor to lag, especially if it's not doing any video processing. Found a couple threads that might offer some insight in your search.

Due to the way the wiring is done there is only one HDMI cable going from the ceiling where the projector will be to the wall where the equipment will be. Therefore it is not practical for me to run another HDMI cable dedicated for the game console. How can I tell which receivers do not touch the video signal and just pass it through?
